Thank you sir for a very informative video. A short while ago I planted some seeds here in Kent, England, from my best friends garden in Arizona (Blue Lupins), into a propergator. Within a week, they were over 2 inches long. Pricked them out and into a large pot of Miracle Grow compost they are now around 4 inches + in length, but growth seems to have slowed. Am hoping they still take even though planted beginning of July. Wettest summer on record here, so keeping them on the window sill.
I just dig a 2 inches on my yard lawn / grass and lupin just grew by itself. I have it for 3 years now. I live zone 8b, it's so hardy that it just grew with the grass and a soil with a lot of rocks.
crikey... i've just got into gardening over the past year and the amount of different soil mixes boggles my mind... it gets very expensive. Like all hobbies people pretend like it's affordable and it's not! at least not when you first start out! I'm going to just try this with potting mix and some perlite. if it fails it fails I guess.
I planted lupines in a flower bed and I had thought that I could plant annual flowers in the bed too so that I could have flowers this year, while I wait for the lupines to flower next year. Unfortunately, the excess nitrogen the lupines are fixing in the soil caused some of the annual flowers to grow huge but without blooms. Cosmos, in particular, are giant but flowerless. My forget-me-nots grew to nearly 4 feet tall(!), but flowered heavily, although the flower heads stretched to the point of being almost spindly. I'm sure there are some flowers that can benefit from the nitrogen boost, but lettuce, strawberries, squash, curcubits, brassicas, and other heavy-feeding plants are probably the best companions for lupines.
George, do you prepare your seeds in any way before planting? Also, the cuttings you mention, these aren't really cuttings, rather early sproutings with a small piece of the tuber preserved? Is that correct?
I to have trouble with Delphiniums they do not winter over well in my zone 3-4 winters. Bought 100 seedlings 2 years ago and only have less than a dozen left. Pacific hybrids seem to be quite hardy.

I adore lupins though. i bought plug plants last year and then harvested the seeds now planting them. fingers crossed!
I plan on trying these in zone 7... *Live in CT in my front yard.. a bunch of hybrids and the new Tuti Fruti Mix.. Fingers crossed!

Could the nodes on the flower stalks possibly create a stem and a crown large enough to take a cutting from?
Would love to see any more you have to offer. I have a great amount of trouble with delphiniums. Not sure if you have some knowledge of those too.

i hope i can get these to grow in florida going to give them a shot now that its fall and not 4000 F. how shadey of an area do they need?
I don't think Lupines will work in Florida.
My son cant grow them in Virginia they want a good freeze.

Lupines do not like being transplanted. It is easiest to just plant seed where you want them to grow.

They will germinate after winter storage in the spring. Freezing not necessary.
