@2:40, you confess that you made a mistake. Heck, I'm was just glad to know that you're human like the rest of us! ha ha. Then you rework the model and it comes out beautiful and perfect, so I'm back to wondering if a Model God walks among us! Another stunning display of craftsmanship raised to the level of art. Bravo, sir! And thank you for sharing your work.
Besides the great build and recovery I'm also impressed at how you condensed a whole build start to finish into 9 minutes of video without missing much.
Very nice. And it was a very beautiful car. I remember it winning, and to me it still looks like something sent back from the future, even after 47 years.
Congratulations on recovering the finish on this model. It turned out spectacular. I do hope that Fujimi will offer the rumored 917 LH kit sometime soon.
I have watched a number of your videos, and always love the work.... but the simple fact that you had to make your own decals and thought they were not as good as the originals??? In my humble eyes they look BETTER than the originals BECAUSE of any flaws that they may have contained (To be honest, I couldn't see any flaws but if you say they were there then they must have been). Fabulous job on the polishing too! You do wonderful work. Now subscribed... 😁
I would really like to see you build a tamiya 1/12 scale formula 1 car such as the mclaren mp4/6 or the williams fw14b... i have learnt a lot from your videos!
All of your videos are great, every single one of them. Maybe in the future some sort of build techniques series could be done. So people who have no talent or experience compared to you could try out some of these processes you use to achieve such great models.
Ah, well done. I made the same mistake with the clear coat building a Revell Jordan Peugeot 197. But that was in the 90s. Resources were rare, knowledge too. Good times.
I enjoy your videos SO much. And I think you should know, that your skills and your impressive works helped me to restart in modelling...after a brake for more than 35 years. Keep those videos coming!!! Best regards Steen
Lovely build as usual. I for one really appreciate how you reveal your miss-steps, and show how to correct them, to soldier on with the build; not just here, but also in others of your models I've seen you make. It is extremely helpful!!! I'm sure you said a few "bad words" when you discovered the clear coat cracking, but you "saved us" from them! LOL :D
This is what you have to listen and watch; if ever make any plans, on becoming a hobby store clerk. You just make sure that; your hobby store doesn't, ever go out of business.
If I could collect, in my opionion, the greatest race cars of all time from each sanctioning body this car would be my top LM prototype racer. You did a wonderful job David representing one of the most important race cars of all time.
Wow! Brilliant work! Inspiring. The way you made the tiny dashboard knobs was beyond amazing. More race cars, please! How about the Tamiya 1/12 scale Williams FW14B F-1 car? 😁
the car varnish may have been synthetic or celuloise based, and most of your paints are probably acrylic based. it cracked because of a chemical reaction. Great job anyway!
this is a great example that even you screw up, there r wys to save it back. model making takes skills and money but the most important is the effort and consistantcy.
I must say thank you you do outstanding work because of you I'm building and restoring models and hotwheels Outstanding performance in your work. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 thanks again
So sad, I had close up photos from that car, because it can be seen in the Porsche Museum Zuffenhausen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany :( I could have provided you with finest details.
I recently bought this kit at a model show for only $5. because there were no decals, instructions, or box lid. The parts are all there except for a chrome gas filler cap which will have to fabricate somehow. Since the kit has the window in the roof that makes it a Daytona car and I plan to build it as the 2 car which won the 1970 24 hrs at Daytona by 45 laps.
Excellent work....one question however as to historical accuracy.....I don't recall ever seeing a Gulf Porsche with the "Gulf" logo on the small rear, middle tail section..... was there a race ( or more) where these cars were run with this?
Did you ever participate in Hockey or Football when you were growing up David ? Were you ever a goalkeeper? Because this is the greatest save I've ever seen...anywhere. Too bad Fujimi doesn't actively make this kit anymore so I can see why you had to salvage it.
If this is the same kit Heller molded, it’s not easy. I’m going to rebuild mine after watching your video, to connect the rear cowl. The poor fit always bothered me. Historic information, the 20 car from LeMans had a color coded green grill paint marking. #22 had yellow, #21 was red. These were matched to the side light markers. John Wyer and team realized the painted grill didn’t really work, since after the first two laps on the wet and dirty course, they were rendered useless in color. Cheers and great job!
You sir are The Beatles of scale modelers. Your videos are superb. Check out The Dreidel www.thedreidel.com - we build bridges between cultures and fight anti-Semitism. You should right an article for us on your hobby and your experiences.
Nice job. I too have had a few disasters but as long as you bounce back and learn it’s all good! My latest model exploded when I tried to push the wheels in. I almost threw it away but it came out nice in the end.
You used Mr. Color super cllear III over acrylics? I've read this varnish should not be used over acrylics, because it's thinner will melt it. How did you avoid that?
TRUELY IRRITATED BY THE LACK OF ANY MOTORS FOR MODELS LIKE THIS!! YOU'RE ASKING OVER 50 BUCKS A KIT, AND YOU CHEAT US OUT OF ONE OF THE BEST PARTS!! AT LEAST REVELL OFFERS A MOTOR!! WHAT A RIPOFF!!
Very nice model...but I thought you knew about the problem with real car clear coat over acrylic paint...always test it first ! I learned a lot from your video, thank you!
I had the same problem one time. I thinned automotive urethane paint to airbrush. I used Tamiya high gloss clear and it did the same cracking to the paint. I tried again, but with extemely thin coats of the clear. It showed less of the cracking. What actually causes this?
Before you painted your orange stripe did you shoot a coat of clear first before masking? Every time I mask over my base it leave a residue behind. That’s even when I let it cure for a few days.
Probably just my eyes, but the model looks a bit... fatter than the real car? Like it's not as sleek as the real one- maybe even a tad bit squashed-looking.
For your and everyone´s knowledge,, there are two ways to paint model cars (one very specific way to paint scale model cars with lacquer or enamel paints like in real cars, but it is a process that starts from the primmer, I could tell you all about it), but the other one is easier and could have saved you a lot of issues try to look for an Urethane varnish or clear coat, does not mater the brand, as long as it is a catalysed varnish or two parts, and if you could get a hold of a good quality crystal acrylic thinner would be best you could paint a car with what ever paint you want even water-based paints and finish it up with a Urethane and the result would be incredible. cheers
Oh! They made you take out the LeMans video. I thought that it set the scene for the model. I learned about the 'washes' from your series. It does add extra depth and detail. I think this video shows everyone that mistakes can happen, but not to give up.
The only thing I don't like on this model is the windshield wiper; I dind it too thick and robust. This is nothing to do with you and your expertise of course. You are one of the best modellers on YT.
Great job! Could you share with more info how to restore decals / make new ones from damaged? I got Mercedes-Benz 1450 LS from Revell that was stored probably in wet basement. Decals sticked to protective paper (that one that comes on Revell's decals sheet) and I'm not sure if they are already damaged or still good enough to be placed on model.
Don't know which car I like better, the 917 or the 512. We are showing Le Mans at our community theatre in June for the 50th anniversary of the 1970 running. Great job on your 917, it looks fantastic!
Very nice. Man, I would kill someone if started playing with that after all the work! The judge would be like, why? I would say watch this video and you will understand. He would then say, ok I'm going to let you off with a warning
This is the old video but reloaded. I had some problems with copyright. It is always great fun :-D
What was the copyright issue? Just curious...
Jake Darling Yeah me too,
PLASMO - plastic models didn't he have a part of the race scene in it
PLASMO - plastic models music? or Porsche being a bitch?
I had in the video one-minute movie scene from "Le Mans 1971". Big deal :-D
You painted on the decals....
You sir are a savage
Its the only way to do it

This is Beautiful!
Will you do the Mazda 787b ?
Agreed!! :)
That would be quite a interesting painting challenge if he decided to do the Renown version without using the decals.
@@hlcepeda I'd actually love to see him give it a go with just paint..
Throwing my support in for the 787B👍
Besides the great build and recovery I'm also impressed at how you condensed a whole build start to finish into 9 minutes of video without missing much.
Fujimi models aren't exactly detailed such as Tamiya but you turned this into a masterpiece! Keep it coming
I appreciate Fujimi for doing older models, I mean, a lot of them.
Very nice. And it was a very beautiful car. I remember it winning, and to me it still looks like something sent back from the future, even after 47 years.
Great models! Love this channel and your dedication!

Just got myself a Tamiya 1/24 Nismo R34 GT-R-Z-Tune # 24282.
Any Help tips with it would be great
Great to see you come back to this build and give it justice. Thanks for the update David. Turned out nice!

Such a classic race car. Splendid modeling skills.

Hey if you kept the first paint job with the thing you used for real cars you could’ve made it like a rare barn find
& besides; you have to have a special kind of machine that, prints the plastic model decals for you.
