I feel like a young common kid walking around singing this song as a respect for how my hometown was created. A king, a soldier, and a poet had created a kingdom which is most known for its peace, purity, and wealth.
The song is referencing the Apocalypsis of the Return of Jesus. It’s God coming to Earth to lay waste to Babylon, the anti-Christ, and the kings of the Earth that will follow him. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
yeah its aggressive like that because its referring to the 2nd coming of God but it sounds happy im assuming because at that time all of God's people will be saved
@@theebagmans It's a pretty bitter sweet prophesy lol. The lyrics are pretty grim when you consider the implications, but it's overall a message of liberation.
I think it’s interesting that the verse abt the ruler (which is talking abt when Jesus had a thorn crown and was being taunted by Roman soldiers) is the most upbeat verse
I didn't even realize this was a jesus song! I was taking the metaphors at face value thinking it was like a Decemberists song and trying to tell me a literal folktale.
Idk why but I could see this in a similar setting to the dancing scene in Repunzel. Multiple different people play different instrument while others dance around and join in singing.

I can imagine an old folk dance that was lost for decades suddenly appearing again, the people laughing and dancing and having a great time to the music. And the background is a fairycore aesthetic.
Well this song as well as the album are made with Christian references. The album title itself, Dear Wormwood, is a reference to The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, a heavily Christian book and author (for reference this is the same man who made Narnia with a Jesus lion). Now for this song specifically, it is talking about the Messiah. "They will tear your city down" is showing how the Jewish believed the Messiah would come and conquer the Romans, and I believe also referencing how Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple. For the poet line, it is talking about how he will use the Word of God. And the king line, it is talking about how he will come to rule the Earth. These also work for Christian interpretations of Jesus. At least this is what I understood from it. Hope I helped a bit!
"tear your city down" can also be read as freeing and cathartic - tearing down something intricate and complex that has taken a long time to build up, but is in the heart of it filthy, corrupt, and keeping its citizens trapped within its walls. the parallels of this to that of an abusive relationship works really well here - with jesus as the saviour who is metaphorically "tearing the city down"
When I look at the comments some say the song has Christian references, but I really believed it with the line, " there will come a ruler who's brow is laid with thorn" referencing Jesus' crown of thorns
I have always imagined this song as a lullaby a Scottish queen would sing to her young children. And the background singers and the accompaniment was all imagined by the children
This song reminds me of me when I was small I lived in Ireland in a small county in the country side with my da and me and my siblings would jump on hay bales and sleep on horses it was so fun
Might be me- but it feels like internally observing. You’ll be a soldier (young and strong) you’ll be a poet (learn your words and feelings) and with both you become a king.
This is the most D&D-esque song I’ve ever heard. I can just imagine a party of a barbarian, a bard, and a noble ranger coming together to defeat a dragon.
Yesss! The start sounds like everyone introducing their characters and starting the campaign and the end sounds like the campaign ending in one finale battle while they all reminisce on the memories they've created together :0
It seems like very few people are realizing this song is about Jesus! If you look that the photo on the screen, it says “dear wormwood” which is a reference to a Christian book by C.S Lewis called the ScrewTape Letters, which is a telling of letters sent between two demons trying to convert a Christian into an athiest. The whole song is talking about Jesus and makes references to the Bible; The King is Jesus-Oil like David’s Boy, brown is lain in Thorn (crown of thorn), the poet is probably speaking of the main authors of the Bible, and the soldier is Jesus destroying sin!
@@crystalkirlia4553 the soldier is the Holy Spirit, poet is Jesus, and ruler is god, ‘brown is laid in thorns’ is the crown of thorns and ‘smeared in oil like David’s boy’ means getting anointed!

This gives me a camp vibe, like if I’m at a camp and we are all sitting by a camp fire and all of us are singing and dancing to this exact song every day
I think this song represents Saul, David and Solomon. Though both David and Saul were soldiers and all three were kings (one at a time). It's a really neat song!
Currently on my first ever trip to Ireland after high-school with my best friend, and this song came on at the best moment ever and I live it so much. Thank you so much for this amazing song
I feel like I'm in a magical world with all my friends and we are bards and were singing this after we had gotten attacked by bandits or pirates and were all slowly dying on by one while singing this together for our last moment
It was already confirmed that this song is about the second coming of Jesus Christ. "There will come a soldier Who carries a mighty sword He will tear your city down" "Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." (Revelation 19:15-16) "There will come a poet Whose weapon is His word He will slay you with His tongue" "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12) "There will come a ruler Whose brow is laid in thorn Smeared with oil like David's boy" "And twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29) "Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses." (Revelation 19:11-14)
This song makes me feel like I'm on a long recovery journey and I've come so far with all my friends, and we're happy in the moment, even if there's still so far to go.
So I’ve read interpretations and stuff and this song makes me feel happy and sad at the same time. But the soldier is someone who breaks us down in life. They tear us down intentionally due to their own ignorance. The poet is amazing with words but he’s the person in life who you think so highly that one word of negativity from them hurts because you know they are wise. The ruler is set in his own ways and you can’t change it. Things in life we need but don’t always want that can hurt us, is something I got from this
Actually, this song is addressed to Wormwood (I’ll explain later). The soldier is coming to tear down Wormwood’s city and free the people trapped there. The poet will use His truth to dismantle Wormwood’s lies. The King will rule righteously in Wormwood’s place, and the singer is excited because they know that He will be a good King. The entire album is addressed to Wormwood, actually. It’s a reference to The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Wormwood is essentially a metaphor for sin and temptation. The Soldier, Poet, and King are actually the same person- Jesus Christ. This song is about the prophecy of His second coming. The Oh Hellos are a Christian folk music band.
This song gives me a feeling I didn’t know existed. A combination of happiness, pride, memories that didn’t happen, friendship and self-love, that’s the feeling. I need this song, I need to listen to it when I’m sad, its- too good
While this definitely isn’t the real meaning behind this amazing song, I’m going to say what I think it’s about anyways. In my mind, the soldier, poet, and king are all different ways to solve problems. Each one is successful in the end (“he will tear your city down”) but they each have their own method. The soldier is like facing a problem head on, taking it down by pure force alone. You don’t need to think your way through, you can just charge to the finish line. His “mighty sword” is like brute strength and perseverance. The poet is the crafty way, the one who finds a way to the end in an unexpected way. “He will slay you with his tongue” is like reading between the lines and interpreting the challenge in a unique way. The king is like solving a problem the way you’re supposed to. This verse has a lot of Christian references (“whose brow is laid in thorn” “David’s boy”) so it’s like following the just, honest, truthful route. This is just what I think when I hear this work of art. It’s such a good song!
@@fantastic_fern9135 You ever heard of the term "the death of the author" pretty much an idea that after an author creates something, it is up to the audience to decide its meaning for themselves
@@darkithnamgedrf9495 I wasn't aware the author died and I've never heard of that, but I don't think it applies when the meaning is obviously and the author stated the meaning
Heard somewhere the album is about escaping abuse, which makes sense. So I’m going off that: the soldier poet and long are all forms of domestic abuse. The soldier is physical The poet is verbal The king is financial/decision making
Umm... so, I'm not even kidding, this song is literally about Jesus. This album was made in reference to an essay or novel that C.S. Lewis (the author of The Chronicles of Narnia) wrote, called The Screwtape Letters. Which were, from what I understand, a series of letters written by the senior Demon Screwtape, to a younger junior Demon Wormwood, in which Screwtape would give advice and guidance to his younger protege on how to tempt and corrupt humanity (specifically one man, referred to only as "the patient" in the letters). This album is essentially The Oh Hellos take on what the Patient would write to Wormwood. This is why so many people think the album is about getting out of abusive relationships, because in a sense, it is. We as humans love Sin. We let it control us, at times we give it almost all we have, hoping for it to give back in return in the form of pleasure, power, satisfaction, ect... But Sin is a deceitful, manipulative, and abusive lover, who in reality cares nothing for you. But it knows all the tricks to keep you coming back. Guilt, lies, immediate pleasure, shame, isolation, uncertainty, anxiety. Just like an abusive relationship, Sin uses our emotions against us like a weapon. And just like an abusive relationship, usually the only ways out of it, are if you take a leap of faith, or if _Someone_ steps in to help.
This is my comfort song I close my eyes and imagine myself in a village everyone with cottage code style singing this exact song in harmony together it’s sorta like an escape
Yes, you're right. The song "Dear Wormwood" makes this especially clear, as the song itself is written as though from a temptee (idk if that's even a word) to a tempter.

@@SlaveofAdonai I- no but I guess it sort of fits
@@will-kyon1067 Oh… This song was originally for Jesus, so I wasn’t sure…

This is literally the anne with an e aesthetic
Why does the lyric contains "they will tear your city down"? It sounds ominous and scary behind this cheery song.
Its He will tear your city down, Like. if they're bad
I believe it is because of the fact that soldiers in ancient times were frequently used to raid and siege other cities.
"tear your city down" can also be read as freeing and cathartic - tearing down something intricate and complex that has taken a long time to build up, but is in the heart of it filthy, corrupt, and keeping its citizens trapped within its walls. the parallels of this to that of an abusive relationship works really well here - with jesus as the saviour who is metaphorically "tearing the city down"
@@GabZonY I had not thought of it that way, even though I knew the album's theme. That's really good.
When I look at the comments some say the song has Christian references, but I really believed it with the line, " there will come a ruler who's brow is laid with thorn" referencing Jesus' crown of thorns

So?

So I’ve read interpretations and stuff and this song makes me feel happy and sad at the same time. But the soldier is someone who breaks us down in life. They tear us down intentionally due to their own ignorance. The poet is amazing with words but he’s the person in life who you think so highly that one word of negativity from them hurts because you know they are wise. The ruler is set in his own ways and you can’t change it. Things in life we need but don’t always want that can hurt us, is something I got from this
This song is from the bible and it is about the end of the world and jesus coming to destroy all evil. Read revlation in the bible.

Umm... so, I'm not even kidding, this song is literally about Jesus.
