Socializing a guardian type of dog isn’t going to make them less protective, it just teaches them when to turn those instincts on. Dogs are smarter than they look, a well socialized dog is going to know if someone shows up with the wrong intentions. An unsocialized dog is going to think that everyone has the wrong intentions because they’ve never never learned about other humans

I've seen some UA-cam videos where if some just pass by, they lunge at the person or dog. It's really gruesome and awful that some people, like mailmen, have actually been killed by doing such a simple task.

Having had many of the Boerboels, they are incredibly loyal and loveable pups that behave like lapdogs to his friends but your worst nightmare if you are sneaky around them. Socialization isn't only needed but control of your pup at all times is necessary given that the biggest guy I had was 85kg (185+lbs). To maintain focus on me, I used to use visual commands most of the times.

Facts, my Boerbol is 145lbs to my 98lbs, luckily they are super eager to learn and very responsive, that being said I have watched him toss multiple dogs like Ragdolls without even trying, sent our neighbors Pyrenees booking it for stepping into our yard with our chickens around. Definitely a dog that needs constant and serious socializing, but such lovable clowns.

Yes I agree! I have raised and bred and trainings the Boerboels over 15 years. They MUST be socialized! I socialized pups before they ever went to their new homes. Their instinct to protect is deep. My favorite male (looked like a white tiger) Zazu…was well socialized. He loved everyone. One day I had a garage sale. People were on and off the land all day. He was…”pet me pet me”! But at the end of the sale, a small white pick up started coming down my 600’ driveway…Zazu knew from that far…instantly he went into high protection mode and ran full speed down the drive…and i thought he was going to ripe the guy out of his truck! Intense…and turns out…they were scoping my place to rob (so I found out the next weekend) they broke in while i was out. My dogs corralled the guy into my shop. I called the cops…right away my Zazu was mr politician and was like…pet me pet me…lol the cops were freaked out over the dogs and instructed his buddies to look for hand, fingers and toes …i kinda laughed…he was serious and knew the damage my dogs could do in protection mode.
Best breed I ever had. But if you don’t socialize…you will have a loaded gun. And if you dont have a leader personality…they can even turn on their handler…(a few famous cases happened from imports years ago).

My parents Boerboel (60 kg’s) spotted someone moving by our homes glass door (around 5 mm thick glass) and immediately bolted for the door in protection mode.
Piper has a frame on him so stopping is not a strong suite of his. He ran into that glass door like a bowling ball hitting pins. Totally cracked the glass without even flinching. Kept on barking and moving forward even when the person was out of sight. Incredibly protective breed and they are just built like absolute tanks

There used to be a Saint Bernard in my neighborhood that would frequently get loose and chase after other dog walkers including my aunt who was walking our dog one day. And honestly I was very upset that my aunt did not call the police when this occurred because my neighbor had to tackle and fight the dog so it didn't get her or my dog, he was biten and scratched up afterward. I should mention that the irresponsible owners were also irresponsible parents that had their kids walk the dog (10 and 8) and the older boy hurt himself falling down when the dog took off. Pretty sure they got rid of him since I haven't seen him in months. Socialization is so fucking important, especially with these big breeds.

I've owned two, and they're definitely not like most large breed dogs. As massive and powerful as they are, they are also surprisingly energetic and agile. They have a very strong protective instinct and will die for their families without a second thought. They're not for everyone, but with proper training and conditioning, they can make great family dogs. Popular here in South Africa and are by far the best breed I've ever owned.

I've had Boerboels for over 20 years and bred them for a very long time. I never put prong collars and shock collars on em. It's hard to see a dog trainer using both on a very young Boerboel under a year old when it's unnecessary. Socialize is key and they will protect you no matter how socialized. They are very loyal & Loving to their people. This breed NEEDS to bond with their family with Positive Reinforcement, not harsh discipline. They should be with their family and not locked away in a crate or kennel as well.

Perfect way to word it. There’s a lot of people out here who don’t care about the mailman or friendly neighbor, but the thought of their guard dog in a crate and unable to guard is a good motivator

If I wanted a dog that would protect my home I'd bring it to a trainer like you. Protecting the home is my job and there is zero doubt in mind he will pitch in if needed. Just owning a beast like that is deterrent itself. They bark when you ain't home. Burglars don't wanna find out if he's friendly or not. Your opinion is spot on.

Seriously no one should have a dog like this as just a pet, working breeds are on another level. Gorgeous but so many people get dogs they have no business in owning cause they won’t put the work in to let the dog be successful.❤

A license would be a better idea. Cuz these dogs can literally be weapons in the wrong hands, and they are hard to manage/stop due to their size.

Definitely our boy was basically our farm dog for the first 8 years of life, we've now moved to the city and he's slowed down with age and enjoys the quiet life but I can't imagine what he could do in the hands of a first time dog owner or someone who thought a pitbull was in anyway close to handling a Boerbol to extremely different dogs, I forget how big he is until I see him with other mastiffs and am like "yup, my lazy potato dog can seriously pack a punch if he wanted👀"

Agree 💯. Just because you like the breed doesn't always mean a good fit, I love several breeds that I will never own because I am not at the level they need me to be to thrive, everyone should know what they can honestly handle,

He's right. High intelligent guardian bleeds like Boerboels and Rottweilers can be fully socialized and still be very capable of guarding you and your family. They know when it's time to not be friendly anymore.

All our Boerboels followed us to the gate when people came visiting. They got to know every person coming to visit or for whatever reason. They definitely knew when to be on guard. My children and their friends were always safe with the Boerboels always being near where ever they were playing. I used to say to people who were not afraid of dogs, they should not mind the drool, dogs just friendly. People whom were afraid of dogs, would put dogs outside, but still where they can see us.

That’s very true info that you’re giving even sometimes with all the socializing you do you still have to be careful with the dog because they have switches, and when they are turned on, it will put the fear God in you , if you’re not ready,

"You don't want to be on the business end of a dog like this in full protective drive". I wouldn't want to be on the business end of a dog like that if he was having a happy, cheerful day. He''s too big and strong, and could hurt someone just by being playful.
