GSD are an amazing breed and I absolutely loved ours and I'd trade both our dogs we have today to have Shasta back as a puppy, but they are a lot of work. Without proper mental and physical exercise they can start tearing things up out of boredom. They are highly intelligent. Check for the breeding to watch for hip dysplasia. As a general rule of thumb if the hips slant down, they are at a greater risk of dysplasia. If their backs are more straight, the chance is reduced. Also, GSD shed like crazy. If a GSD were to be named with one mutant super power, it's hair production. Many people call these dogs lovingly "German Shedders". They require a lot of brushing and coat care. Each spring we'd brush out Shasta and allow the hair to blow across the fenced in back yard so the birds could use it in building nests. You'll have hair bunnies running around under furniture and such and there's almost no way to avoid it. When we had company coming down for the weekend we'd brush Shasta on Monday, Wednesday and Friday a few hours before they arrived. By Sunday morning you could pick tufts of hair off her back end. If you do the research and you can manage their mental and physical exercise and the coat maintenance, they are amazing dogs. Being a guardian breed you may have issues finding a house or rental property because a lot of people consider them an insurance liability. Some GSD have unconscious whining issues that are difficult or impossible to correct because they do not even realize they are doing it. To put it into human examples, I have an unconscious habit of bouncing my knee. It's not something I do on purpose and I can focus on stopping it, and 30-60 seconds later I'll be doing it again. In the puppy courses Garret covers a lot of tips on finding the right dog from any litter. There are 3 puppy courses and I don't recall off the top of my head which contains that valuable information, but you can reach out to info@diyk9.com and they are happy to help. Also ask about any currently running discounts. Garret gives discounts on courses several times a year, and Christmas and New Year's are some of his favorites.

I have to agree. I adopted a 5 month old Treeing Walker Coonhound that apparently has more energy than the Energizer Bunny. Couldn't get him to walk calmly even with his voracious appetite and treats for days. Ordered an HS prong collar, did two UTurn corrections and a couple of sudden stops, now he walks right next to me and my 10yr old kid can walk him as well. I couldn't believe it. Solved in 10 minutes.
My dog Echo is half Treeing Walker Coonhound and I really love that half of her. The mother was one half of a Siberian Husky breeding pair, but the Coonhound did the deed so the entire liter was surrendered. Just under 4 months old, Echo took a single corrective U-Turn to train, along with sudden stop pops and positive rewards for proper engagement. That's as much the specific dog as the training because I'd never trained a dog to walk on leash before Garret's "The Perfect Walk" course. I even accidentally screwed up the corrective U-Turn because in my head I was holding a 6' leash. In my hands I was holding a 4' leash, so the pop wasn't so much of a pop as a firm pull, but the message was delivered and effective. 2+ years later and she still walks perfectly on a leash. My wife and daughter love the Husky side, but personally, I'd be happy if Echo was 100% Treeing Walker Coonhound. I'd miss those ice blue eyes though. Have you checked out his free course? Aside from professional dog handlers that do bite work or similar tasks, there's not much need for a choke chain. They are designed as you said to choke a dog out which is many times the only way to get a police or military K9 to release a bite if they are really amped up. If you're happy with the choke chain that's fine, but there is a simlar alternative called a martingale collar. www.diyk9.com/training-tools - scroll down to the "Recommended Amazon Dog Training Tools" which is in red. Currently the 4th link over has a black biothane collar with a chain that allows the collar to hang loose when the dog is walking on leash and not pulling. As soon as the dog pulls the pressure cinches the collar so the dog can't spin around and pull their heads out of the collar. As soon as the dog stops pulling, the chain releases and it's back to hanging around the dog's neck with slack. How much slack you allow is up to you with the adjustable buckle. @Troy-Echo The choke chain is made to be able to give a quick jerk and immediately release. It needs to go on the dog so that the ring attached to the leash exits the other ring going up. You get immediate release from the weight of the chain - pull/ release quickly. They did not have all this other stuff in the 1950s & 60s. Once our dogs were trained, they never needed a leash. We would sometimes use a rope or long chain to tether them in camp if we were in a campground with other people around. When going anywhere with the dog, tell it to 'heel'. No other commands needed until OK to release. Walk and the dog walks with you. Stop, the dog sits in the heel position until you begin to walk again.
You give me the best ideas of challenges for my training w my pack of dogs I plan on taking 5 to the mall and seeing if all 5 can be as good as your one

I don't know the leash laws in NC, but they do vary from state to state. I'm in VA and the laws here state you have to either have your dog on a leash, or under your direct control. I'm fascinated that Thanos is allowed into the mall. There are very few stores, malls not included, in which you can take dogs to here in Australia. If they are a service dog it's ok, but otherwise you can't

When my dog was younger I could take her hiking. She would always stay within 50m of me and I could recall her if I noticed something on the trail that could be a hazard. My wife’s dog on the other hand had to be on a leash the whole time. He was a free spirit.

You should never train a dog on an e-collar until the dog is 100% rock solid on a command such as food lure, hand command, verbal command and leash pressure command, but with the walks you do, it would be worth getting the training to allow your wife's dog to be fully off leash and on an e-collar.
@ sadly we have to say goodbye to the free spirit next week. I will keep the courses in mind when we are ready for a new puppy. I like working with dogs and try to train my dogs to the level of the k9 good citizen program (temperament allowing).

It's awesome seeing well trained dogs. Depending on the age I'd start with the puppy essentials course, obedience 101 which is a 100% positive course, then move on to the Leashed course. I'm not suggesting you break the law, but knowing the benefits of e-collar training, I'd look up the law and see what the penalty is for using an e-collar. Even without moving up to corrective or aversive levels for some training, the amount of benefit from what Garret teaches would put your dog training miles ahead. There are so many black/white crystal clear things you can train a dog using an e-collar. But you can teach your dog a massive amount and to a high level of obedience using a leash. We cover proper ecollar use in Unleashed on DIYK9.com. We NEVER recommend cheap ecollars. 3 collars 1) Prong collar for power steering and power brakes 2) Martingale collar as a backup to prong collar for safety as prongs often fail 3) Ecollar for offleash freedom and control
Prong collars come loose from time to time. Knowing this I always hold my prong collar up and make sure it hangs straight and the links are connected. Even then moments after I put the prong on once, it fell off. I thought I simply didn't click the buckle fully, but the buckle was clicked shut. I don't understand how but a link came loose. You should have to pinch the link to get it to come loose, but it did come loose. It's always better to have a second collar with a prong. Have you checked out his free course? I really wish I could afford your training for my Duke I use what I watch. But he's literally terrified of just the beep of turning on the e-collar remote I want him trained not terrified. Next step is prong collar I just have to know correct positioning. He doesn't jump at people/dogs but loves yelling letting it be known he's there, but if the person comes close, he's checking them out and then enjoys attention. 1 man in our neighborhood, he definitely doesn't like only the one man I go by his instinct. I have the same untrusting sense. I don't trust the man either. He's still doing good on his commands but still needs improvement.
I'm in trouble with a giant and aggressive German Shephard whom I adopted at 17 months old. He is reactive beyond imagination, even a fly is enough to trigger him, he is human/cat/dog/whatever aggressive but he is also totally in love with me so I put up with his craze but I know I am in trouble. I worked with 3 different so called "trainers" but all they did is to rob me... Anyway I watched the whole thing with envy Thanos is my dream dog I wish I could have that relationship with my mad dog......
GSD are highly intelligent dogs. It doesn't matter how good the dog trainer is. If the owner doesn't keep up with the training, the dog will find loopholes and start exploiting them. That's one reason I love Garret's online courses. I trained my dog so I know exactly and to the split second when to reward or correct a behavior, and it's easy to keep my dog from slipping backwards. If you get the courses you'll have access to weekly or monthly live training and Q&A sessions with Garret depending on your membership. You can ask in the members only group and you'll get a ton of great advice from other owner-trainers and moderators. You can also post questions that you can have a back and forth discussion with Garret for any issues you need special help on. He'll give you the help you need. I think last week there was a call which is scheduled for 1 hour, but people had questions and some needed in depth help, and Garret had extra time and that 1 hour call was over 2 hours long. Garret seldom gives short answers. If the person isn't on the call he will give his answer, and know what questions his original answer will bring up, then he'll answer those too. One of the things I do when I'm assisting on these calls is track the start and stop times for each question so they are easy to look up the question and Garret's response later. One person had a back and forth discussion that was 26 minutes long. If you have the courses and need the help, Garret and staff will do everything in their power to get you the answer you need. Prong collars and e-collars are banned here, where I live. It's illegal to use them. Garrett, is it even possible to get my dog to behave the way Thanos does without those tools?
You can go a long way with your dog training without using an e-collar, and you could have a very well behaved dog in a mall. You'd not have the off leash reliability that Garret has with Thanos with the e-collar training though. Your dog would only be reliable at the length leash it is on. I have a 6' and 30' leash and an e-collar. Without the e-collar, I'd not take Echo out without being on a leash. I'm 99% certain she would obey commands, but if she saw something that triggered her or kicked her prey drive into overdrive (sometimes a deer), without a leash and without an e-collar, there's no way I could get her to recall and overcome that prey drive with 100% certainty. Then I'd be off hoping I could find her, but being part Treeing Walker Coonhound, she could easily chase and track a deer for miles. You can get the results without a prong collar, but it just takes about 2x the force for the dog to receive the training. It's harder on the dogs neck and throat, and harder on your wrists, but it can be done. Prong collars are not inhumane, and neither are e-collars if you have the proper training to use them. In my opinion they are mainly outlawed due to ignorance and politicians not taking time to do their due diligence research.
Wgen a dog is in board and train, what does their day look like? Wake in the crate, come out for pees and poos, a walk, training session, back into the crate, trainjng about 2 hours later, back jnto crate and then 1 more training and then in tk bed? The thing im struggling most with isnt the training its the what happens in between

That course also covers a TON of information you'll want to know before decided on which dog training style you're comfortable with, what type of dog training you want such as someone coming to your house once a week (not a great option), board and train, or being an owner-trainer. Garret's done a ton of training for both highly trained police K9's and civilian pets. He's seen all kinds of trainers and what they do right and wrong, and he gives you tips and points to consider to find what you need and avoid people that end up taking your money for what ends up being low level training and low value. You often see new trainers doing an hour session one or more times a week while building clientele. Then they tend to shy away from that because it's just not worth the time for the money. In the end they are training you to train your dog, and since most trainers doing home visits are new, you'd get better training from DIYK9.com. You have access to 100% of the videos depending on your membership so you can watch and rewatch anything you want from classroom or practical demonstrations. If that's not enough you can ask questions in the members only areas and ask Garret on his live sessions and he'll give you direct answers. It's best to be on the call so you can have a back and forth discussion so he can nail down the details for the specific issue(s).
@@dr.johnwatson2503 Agreed. A high percentage of US GSD have hip issues. Look for a reputable breeder. Talk to them too to be sure you can manage all the requirements for owning a GSD. They shed like crazy and require a lot of mental and physical exercise every day. Great dogs and I miss our GSD, but they are a lot of dog and drive.
Health issues is one thing, as people mentioned already. The other is whether you get a working line or show line German shepherd. You probably don't want the former unless you are experienced. My advice is to really do your research and get a show line gsd from a reputable breeder. You will pay more but believe me it's worth it.
Maybe a revolution is needed in order to get your freedom and your country back on many other levels beside just the idiotic ban of these tools. One tool in particular which is actually manufactured in your country (the prong collar) but not allowed to be used
Great video thank you for that and merry Christmas to you and the family and Thanos and the rest of your dog pack🐾 I have an Australian Shepherd/border collie medium size dog. I’ve been using a prong with her for a while now and she responds extremely well. I find sometimes putting her work best on her works great too. The recall is great, but I’ve got a train to a shepherds whistle and we could be at the dog park and she could be around like 10 other dogs in the minute. I use that whistle she comes running straight to me. I still don’t trust her doing it off leash just letting her do it so there’s more training needed obviously I like the idea of the E collar that might be used in the spring cause I’m in Canada and it’s too freaking cold right Now.🇨🇦🎄🦴

I'm old. Always used a "choke chain". They work just fine, and I've never choked one of them. It's a discipline and release tool.

@Troy-Echo
The choke chain is made to be able to give a quick jerk and immediately release.
You give me the best ideas of challenges for my training w my pack of dogs
I plan on taking 5 to the mall and seeing if all 5 can be as good as your one
Merry Christmas to you and Mr Thanos.

Awesome advice as usual.😊 (UK)
Hi in the UK, and thank you!
I like how you are slick and obey the Florida leash laws by throwing the leash over your shoulder in the mall.😂
:0)
Actually, Garret moved to North Carolina a little over a year ago. Welcome to actual freezing weather Garret. That's a tactic he shows in "The Perfect Walk" too.

That's sad. I've taken Echo into Lowe's and Home Depot obviously, and pet stores, but I've also taken Echo into Target and other stores because she is so well behaved on leash.

When my dog was younger I could take her hiking. She would always stay within 50m of me and I could recall her if I noticed something on the trail that could be a hazard. My wife’s dog on the other hand had to be on a leash the whole time. He was a free spirit.

It's sad the free spirit has to be restrained like that.
I like working with dogs and try to train my dogs to the level of the k9 good citizen program (temperament allowing).
i have a question but have yet to find an answer whats the longest you should have your dog down stay like say im going to be watching my son at kickboxing and its an hour long is that too long i would love to have some feed back thank you

He knows attack and she realised after what she said 😂😂😂
ROFL - I can't imagine the headache it would be if your dog was trained to do bite work and some random person yelled ATTACK!, and your dog ran off a bit someone. Garret loves having fun with the public.
That makes me wonder how often he did that with his professional police K9s.

I usually see ladies with their poodles and Yorkies or Maltese and Nordstroms...this must have been a first
It's awesome seeing well trained dogs. I was in NY city about 16 months ago and saw a lady walking with 2 dogs in the 70-80 pound range and they were walking next to her or behind her and nothing bothered them. I was impressed and took a photo, although finding it would take a while.

In some countries like Germany E-Collars are illegal. How would you Train your dog without the E-Collar?
Depending on the age I'd start with the puppy essentials course, obedience 101 which is a 100% positive course, then move on to the Leashed course. I'm not suggesting you break the law, but knowing the benefits of e-collar training, I'd look up the law and see what the penalty is for using an e-collar. Even without moving up to corrective or aversive levels for some training, the amount of benefit from what Garret teaches would put your dog training miles ahead. There are so many black/white crystal clear things you can train a dog using an e-collar. But you can teach your dog a massive amount and to a high level of obedience using a leash. I absolutely loved the Leashed course.

What E collar do you recommend? My old dog got ahold of a bowl of spaghetti before and man o man that was a tough walk the next day when he had to go to the bathroom lol
We never recommend the ecollar without professional guidance and only after your dog has a very good foundation of basic obedience commands first. We cover proper ecollar use in Unleashed on DIYK9.com. We NEVER recommend cheap ecollars. What about (for example) the door in my living room to the kitchen
Sure, you can apply the method to whatever thresholds you'd like.
How many colors does this dog have on four ? and what’s the purpose?

How many collars does this dog have on choke collars e collar
3 collars all with an important purpose
Can you expect a 100% cooperation from your dog who’s 8-12 months old ? mine is very good when he is tired …
Yes you can and you should
I wish I could afford your courses. I'm sure they are worth it, but I just don't have the money

@AmericanStandardK9 Oh, I didn't see that, I'll check it out. Thanks for the info.
Check out these for tips on prong collar fit www.youtube.com/@AmericanStandardK9/search?query=prong%20fit

Came Corso? How old?
👍👍👍👍
For a prong alternative, try a Starmark training collar.
🤩❤️🔥😎🐶💓
Garrett really yelling at the camera in front of the water fountain LOL
Trying to be louder than the water fountain and the background noise so you can hear me.
Wgen a dog is in board and train, what does their day look like?
Wake in the crate, come out for pees and poos, a walk, training session, back into the crate, trainjng about 2 hours later, back jnto crate and then 1 more training and then in tk bed?
The thing im struggling most with isnt the training its the what happens in between
Depends on the trainer. Look for someone who has the pup living in the house. And a puppy needs more rest than an older dog. Ask lots of questions.

I am gonna get a female German shepherd
Good luck. Do your research. Due to a lot of American backyard breeding many of GS are prone to issues.
@dr.johnwatson2503 ok
Teaching dog training with a Corso is almost cheating.
I have a pit bull I think my dog is better
In germany, half of these tools are not allowed
Maybe a revolution is needed in order to get your freedom and your country back on many other levels beside just the idiotic ban of these tools. One tool in particular which is actually manufactured in your country (the prong collar) but not allowed to be used
@@AmericanStandardK9 Im on your side. Training my viszla would be way more friendly and effective with a prong
Would never have imagined Germany was so thoroughly prescriptive around dog keeping and behavior.
I still don’t trust her doing it off leash just letting her do it so there’s more training needed obviously I like the idea of the E collar that might be used in the spring cause I’m in Canada and it’s too freaking cold right Now.🇨🇦🎄🦴
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you as well!
