@VideoAudioDisco09 how is this related? The shroud has been analyzed by an astounding number of scientists and forensic experts from a myriad of different perspectives: textile, historical, chemical, anatomical, physiological, botanical, medical, image formation, etc, etc. All point towards its authenticity as the burial cloth of a man tortured and crucified, dead on a cross and buried in a tomb near Jerusalem. Only one, the radio-carbon test, amply proven to have been done on a flawed sample, suggests otherwise... It's not very scientific to override 99% of the data because of that one percent outlier. Even worse when further scientific tests have cast abundant shadows over the reliability of that one percent outlier...

Jesus claimed to be one with God. Jesus claimed to be the Messiah. If he is "a prophet", what did he profess? Did Mohammed heal people? Did he receive worship? How can Jesus be a prophet that Muslims recognize, yet they don't agree with his "prophecy"? The only reason that you think he is a prophet is you are told to think that by your "faith". The "Jesus" of the Koran is a different Jesus then the Bible. The Koran point blank says kill Jews. Also, to be a good Muslim, (mostly only Muslims know this), you also have to believe the "official" commentary that appends it. Islam means peace? Kill the infidel. Peace for our group? Kill everyone else? Kill anyone who defiles a mosque? Outsiders are told Islam means peace. Once your in, they tell u it means submission. Believe what you believe.when the bait is switched, it's violent. Also, the Catholic Church, hijacked Christianity to justify exterminating "pagans". Catholicism became the official religion of Rome, not Christianity. They pray to Mary, they seek forgiveness from a priest, they received indulgence's (money for sin), they crusaded against Muslims. They aren't Christian. The pope receives worship (bowing, kissing his hand) sits on a throne, where a crown, rules a nation. The "holy" Roman empire. Anti-christ? I dunno. I know love. I know hate. I know blessing. I know control. Sry 4 rabbit trail.

I identify with Reza's perspective of "belief",it is one that is not underpinned by a conviction of ultimate truth, which is what differentiates him from ordinary followers religion. Instead it is, at least in his eyes, a mode of expression. The problem I have with Dawkins and his medical "look at the evidence" approach is it that it is devoid of all feeling, and we are creatures of feeling, centuries worth of human endeavour have gone into religion, there's some value to be derived from its "ways", for the soul

Except facts, reason, logic, evidence and reality don't care about feelings and feelings isn't evidence of anything.
I sometimes feel like I'm being watched, is that evidence that I'm being watched? No it's just paranoia. Feelings don't prove anything. Yes the idea of god and heaven makes me feel nice and happy but it still doesn't have anything to prove it. People like Dawkins (and every other atheist and agnostic, which is just another word for atheist) require evidence to believe something, things requireevidence to exist.

Please do not say things for the sake of others that might displease God. I moved to US the same time your family migrated and had two children there, I raised my children there and later moved to serve my country and my daughter who was raised there and went to university there , now knows how much the rights of the people is taken away by the Zions and imperialist. The idea that the actual Jesus is very different from the image created of him, while pushing aside the people who actually knew him, to create a far more mass-market religion decades after his death is both plausible and extremely compelling.

Most of the folks asking questions seem to already be coming from a place of agreement with Reza, but no one raises the question, "What about the prophecy?" The Book of Isiaha talks about the coming of Jesus of Nazareth and that he would be born in Bethlehem as well as a ton of other facts that narrow it down to only ONE POSSIBLE MAN. Nobody else in human history even comes close to what the prophets described. The fact that no other living being as ever claimed what Jesus did, just proved he was here to fulfill the Old Testament and did so. He was not here to start a Christian church. He was here for our salvation. Otherwise, us wicked men would be doomed because no one is capable of truly being like God.

Prof. Aslan would argue (I think), as does John Dominic Crossan, that the followers of Jesus created a narrative in which he was seen to "fulfill" those prophecies. For example, we know that Luke makes up the Bethlehem story of a "whole world being taxed" trip made necessary by Caesar. Historically, it never happened, but it does serve to link Jesus to the Joel prophecy. See? It's easy to do.

More importantly, the importance of the community of believers, the mutual support, the common property, are also shared by both.

***** Aslan is oblivious to any positions that contradict him. That much can be seen in just about everywhere that his mouth has opened. Good scholar a lot of the time. Poor interpretations as well, however. That's why his opinions are largely uninformed. I mean take his biggest claim for example: that religion is defined by how the majority practices it.....this might be true for some forms of (undefined) spirituality/indigenous religions....not so for Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism, or even some of the ancient state religions.

***** To me it seems you're describing yourself. I can only refer to you to the tissue-box again because that and the trashcan that said tissue goes in is exactly where your logic belongs. The only fun you made was of your own intelligence. I specifically pointed out an example of Aslan's errors on his definition of religion. Other examples can be seen such as his defending Palestinian terrorists because Israel as a democracy has a "higher standard" to uphold, and various such. I've read much of his "no god but god" and combined with this lecture adds up to a pretty good summary of the man: political loudmouth. Goes right hand-in-hand with his weird differentiation between Persian (as incorrect for someone from Iran) and Iranian. Uhm, people and heritages existed long before legalistic names of states; Iran, named after Aryan because of their support of Hitler in WWII....talk about unsubstantiated claims, you probably didn't even get that far in the lecture.
In his "no god but god", prior to his popular fame, he makes good arguments a lot of the time and sometimes makes outright mistakes. So the only cheap jokes you made was at your cheap logic, dear friend.

Rick Monty Aslan is NOT a "scholar of religion", he is just a muslim. If you really are an agnostic then it should be pretty easy to see that he is just fulfilling an agenda here (if you cannot then I'm sorry but you still don't possess the knowledge corpus to listen to these types of lectures: build a basic foundation for yourself first elsewhere you will just be the typical victim of people that use their credentials to push an agenda, whatever that may be). I don't want certainly to defend Christianity, but all he says in "Zealot" is completely false from a myriad of points: historically, theologically, anthropologically and either on pure reading of the verses he quotes.

I am a muslim, and I want to clarify some thing for christians. What Reza concluded in his book does not fit with Islamic view or Islamic theology,so stop calling his he is a bias! Islam does not say Jesus was killed by Roman nor jews . Rather God protected him and sent him to heaven. Moreover, Islam says Jesus was born miraculously. Therefore, Christians should deal with facts that Reza concluded, which are Jesus was a Jewish, so when Jesus said Son of God what did he really mean for a jewish community ?and Paul has never seen him,nor did he walk with Jesus! Deal with these facts and face the truth that your religion was established by Paul not Jesus.

I have done a lot of reading and study on Christian history and origins, and what I like about Reza Aslan's latest book about Jesus, entitled "Zealot", is that it puts altogether, between two covers, all the basic material that many writers on the historical Jesus have said about Jesus and his times, all in one volume, as a kind of "Historical Jesus 101" course. I cringed, however, to see Aslan fall victim to the same common error presumed by the vast majority of biblical scholars and writers: That John the Baptist ate locusts and wild honey, but he ate wild Honey Locust fruits, which is none other than the Carob pod, which is used to prepare many chocolate substitute sweets and candy bars found in health food stores. Dr. Aslan may take issue with me here regarding what the actual Greek of the New Testament says, but for various reasons, John the Baptist could NOT have eaten locusts and wild honey! Please consider:
    1) A common food additive used as an emulsifier is "Locust Bean Gum". Is this gum from the bean of an insect? NO! It is gum from the bean of a pod of a tree in the Legume family (Leguminosae) that bears pods, which includes Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) as the sweetest member, hence the name "Honey Locust" for it.
    2) They say that John the Baptist spent all his time fasting, praying and baptizing in the desert wilderness. If he had really eaten grasshopper - locusts and wild honey, he would have had no time for any of those activities - he would have had to spend all his time chasing after grasshoppers in order to catch enough to fill his belly, and he would have also had to spend a lot of time raiding beehives, with all the attendant risks of swatting and fending off enraged bees - not conducive to the spiritual life at all!
    3) If John the Baptist had really eaten grasshopper locusts and wild honey, all that concentrated protein (the grasshoppers) mixed with all that concentrated sugar (honey) without hardly any fiber content would have been absolutely disastrous for his intestinal health, and would have fermented and putrefied in his gut, rendering him unable to pursue his spiritual activities. The Carob pod, on the other hand, is a remarkably complete, whole food, rich in complex carbohydrates, protein, fiber, calcium, B vitamins, etc... And definitely WOULD have been a livable diet, albeit a very austere, limited one. They say that John the Baptist wore, rough camel hair shirts to roughly scratch and scour the outside of his body; the rough fiber of the Carob pod did the same thing to his guts, and the inside of his body as well. Those peasants and agrarians living in first century Palestine, who were familiar first hand with the Carob pod, would have appreciated this allusion as doubly emphasizing the rough, ascetic character of John the Baptist, whereas it seems to have been totally lost on Dr. Aslan, for all his astute scholarship in other areas.
I suspect that other herbalists such as myself similarly cringe to see otherwise good scholars make this error.
    Sincerely,
David Osborn, MH (Master Herbalist), L.Ac. (Licensed Acupuncturist)

I think its funny people say it's because he's a muslim, or Islam repackaged for the west. Lol. The author goes against islam in every major point of contention. Islam says Jesus was born of a virgin and has extremely high regard for Mary. Islam teaches also that Jesus was not crucified and that God took him straight to heaven. But I wouldn't expect these Christians to understand or have knowledge of islam, they are barely literate in their own religion. He wrote this book not from a Islamic or Christian view because neither are hysterical records. He wrote it from the view point of a scholar drawing conclusions from historical texts. I love this book and find myself rereading it all the time.

I have no problem with any one talking & writing about Jesus. My only problem is with historians who assume Jesus actually existed.

39:16 "Jesus had a far more complex notion about the use of force than we give him credit for."
How he arrives at this conclusion is beyond me. What evidence are we citing for this unsubstantiated claim?
    Speculation in= speculation out.

53:00 There is a third way to think about Paul. This is that his Jesus was strictly spiritual an arch angel if you like who never came down to earth as a man. This becomes apparent when you carefully read his 7 genuine epistles.
In these surviving letters & fragments we have in excess of 20 000 words about Jesus. Before you read them you could draw up a laundry list of things you'd expect him to relay about Jesus. The list would start like this: Joseph, Mary, Bethleham, Nazareth, John the Baptist.......The list would end a bit like this, empty tomb, eating fish, Jesus ascends bodily to Heaven.
The point I am making is that none of your list items will get checked off except for crucifixtion, burial & resurrection. Paul was a platonist and believed these events took place in one of the lower levels of heaven. The letters have been meddled with to try and make them fit the historical agenda but you can still tell, just by reading them your self.

He points out himself that he takes the text of the bible and compares it. Its just so ludicrous that people don't understand why all Christians are up in arms. He admits in this video that Jesus was fully man and God and he says its impossible for that to be true. and he is saying in this video WHY HE WROTE THE BOOK that is the real reason. But he keeps saying...I'm a scholar ....what I am not questioning Christianity? Okay Reza. So out of integrity. He is not so smart because as time goes by he will be found out.

***** Just for laughs. I am a media consultant so I have to watch all the shows but I don't watch it on a regular basis. I'm more of a CNN Girl myself. However I was just very surprised to check that Fox News Network is one of the top five earning Networks. They rake in the cash. Believe it or not.

well.... now we all know he's a cannibal.... and I think he's kind of looked at by most as a pariah. His ideas about Christ are based on lies.

Reza ate human brains on CNN for clicks. His speech was lies. You agree with a cannibal. You don't recognize evil when you see it.
