Interested in the Kawasaki KLR 650 S and it's off road capabilities? We got a chance to ride the KLR 650 all around our adventure bike training area and put Kawasaki's lower version of the KLR to the test. A lot of adventure motorcycles sit quite high and can be intimidating , especially if you are new to off road motorcycle riding. The Kawasaki KLR 650 S with it's lower seat height is a great option to bridge the the gap between a smaller dual sport motorcycle to the ADV world.
Hear from our ADV off road instructor Daniel Sedlak what he thought about the KLR 650 S after spending some time on it.

I'm 64 years old ,I got the KLR 650s, I'm glad I did, I would not take for it , I love riding it on the forest roads and back dirt roads places I could not ride my Harley.
Same here but I’m younger w disability, my Harley is so damn heavy and the KLR is just great to maneuver. I don’t feel the need to do all the upgrades
I’ve wanted a KLR650 for as long as I can remember. When I came across an S model, I bought it. I’m really enjoying it so far. Thanks for the video!
I just bought one also. For my 57th Birthday! It is also the KLR 650S model. Love it. The EFI is awesome. I do wish it had about 10 more hp. But it does well.
A rider could install a lockable toggle switch to disable the ABS, for hard sections. I’m gonna make that one of my first mods.
Cool! Would love to see your Team's assessment of the standard KLR model as well. Very popular bike amongst Adventure Riders, especially newbie riders. Thank you! Great content.
Thank You! It looks like I will get my hands on the standard KLR in June. Looking forward to that myself.
Lovely bike. Wish it had 40+bhp and a tall overdrive 6th gear for highways.
The title for my 23 KLR 650 says 40 bhp. With a K&n filter +aftermarket exhaust 42+ ,with a16 th sprocket what more could you ask for!!
Biggest pro for me... The klr will do 98% of what a T7 will do for half the price. The klr has around the world thousands of times over.
I'm 5'-9 1/2" w/ a 31 1/2" inseam, 225 lbs, 63 yr old and just bought the KLR650 Traveler. On day 1 it seemed a little high for me and I had to tip toe at times, but after a couple days I got used to it real fast. Did some fairly challenging riding already in the Black Hills. Totally in love with the thing now and anxious to get out and do some trail riding after 40 years of street riding on my Harley.
I just bought a 2024 KLR650S. I have had 3 of these now. A 2006 (1st Gen), a 2008 (2nd Gen), and now a 3rd Gen. I am average height and like the ability to flat foot the 'S' version bike. I find it a little funny that these are called "adventure bikes" now, the KLR has been around long before that was a thing. I use it mostly as a commuter ride, and it's great for that and just general exploring and screwing around.
I almost got the S; on my non-S, I can place both feet on the ground...on asphalt. Sometimes, on uneven, rocky ground I would like the S. Anyone less than 34” inseam should consider one.
Great review man! I bought mine yesterday, I am 5'9, it just right for me and I love it!
First, thanks for the video, very cool. I’ve purchased the KLR650s and it fit me to a “T” so to speak. It’s way improved over my 1st Gen 2000 KLR which I absolutely cherished. This is a great bike for all, as a commuter and to get dirty, very versatile 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
how tall are you
@@adamnguyen168 5’9”
I’m 6’1 and the regular KLR is too tall for me. I think the S is perfect.
Hey, thank you for the video. I was debating whether or not to get the KLR-S or the KLR but this helped thank you.
Thanks for watching! Which one are you leaning towards?
Great review! How about reviewing the KTM 390 Adventure?
Hoping to get my hands on one soon. Thanks for watching
That looks like put by Campo. Great riding areas out there.
I wanted to get a KLR last year, but I’ve got stumpy legs, so I passed and got an XT250. I’m trading the XT in for a KLR650S next week!
Out by Campo. I had a typo there! I worked out that way for a few years. Great area.
Exact same bike I just bought 😊
Have you ridden it yet? What do you think?
The KLR-S has three main issues - getting stuck on the skid plate due to very low clearance; - it’s a very heavy pig offroad(I’ve picked it up more than 50 times at this point.); - it’s very wide, especially if you mount engine guards. You’ll definitely get stuck in dry washes.
So no, it is not like a dual sport or proper adventure bike at all. It’s a light-offroad capable road bike. I still love my KLR though. I just have to accept that I’ll need a second, more off road capable, bike.
Thank you for the review! I have the 2023 KLR and has been great. I have been riding and filming across America. It's a very comfortable bike.
Can you please compare klr650 with vstrom 1000,2014(second gen) in off road capabilities ?.
Specially single track and stuff.
Glad to see Kawasaki thinking about us shorter riders.
Just curious where in Ontario you ride for your motorcycle reviews, great trails.
I don’t understand the ABS issue. Isn’t it only the front brake abs?? Thanks for the video.
Reichert Shoals
Hi there, nice video. Seat height with KLR’s has never bothered me because I have long legs ( on my third KLR now) but I’m really glad Kawasaki did this. It might encourage more riders to get on them and get out there. Thanks again. 🇦🇺
This is not the *off road* I was looking for!. 😅 But good video
A KLX (basically a DRZ400E) is better for singletrack, IMO. My Harleys (FXR and Sportster) have higher ground clearance than my new KLR. I still love it, though.
Gotta pit in a real skid plate and low-clearance, magnetic oil drain plug.
Bartoletti Lake
Great video I truly enjoyed it, I just purchased a KLR S none ABS and I love it, I was worried about the lower height it really hasn't been an issue, thanks for the hard work!
Gracie Cliffs
Love your approach to this unique bike, thanks...

I'm 6'1 but went with the 650S. I want my dad to also be able to ride if he wants, and the regular 650 seemed too tall for him at 5'8
Hey dude! We are right around the same height. I am wondering how you feel about the bike now being 6 months down the road? If you somehow see this i would love a response!
@Rotten4 It has been nothing short of Excellent! A few times a week I'll ride it to work instead of my car, thats a 70 mile round-trip and it handles it like a champ, getting a good 4-5 days before needing to he topped off! As for off the beaten path, it has taken any and every type of terrain Florida has to throw at it and prevailed without issue! Obviously, it's not a speed demon topping out below 90mph, so if that's a factor, I'd hold off for something else, but for what I want, the KLR650S is pretty much perfect!
@@socberttrucker3598 Great man thanks for the response! I was really close to buying one but now i am leaning towards a vstrom 650 so we will see! I think where i will be doing mainly street and sort of on-road or backroad adventuring i would be much happier with the strom or even maybe a versys 650.
@Rotten4 if you want speed, those are certainly better bikes, but if you want endurance and reliability, the KLR650 reigns Supreme
ABS disconnect just pull the fuse! Geesh!
Great review! 👍🏻
Why are you reviewing the KLR650S as if it is a trail bike, it was never designed to be a trail bike, it's designed to be a back road, fire trail riding bike, if you wanted a bike for trail riding you'd by a bike that was a trail bike by design.
We get a lot of questions from riders that are interested in joining the ADV world about the off road capability of the KLR 650S. Kawasaki was interested in showing that the bike is off road capable and I wanted to take it out and see how it would handle. The video is the result of those three factors. The bike is not fully designed for hardcore off road riding, yet it still managed to ride all of the terrain we put it through which gives everyone that is considering the KLR S as their entry bike into ADV riding the answer to their question if the bike can handle more than gravel roads. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
You'd be surprised how well this bike can do on the trails. I've seen videos of KLRs doing single track. Will it do as well as a YZF or KTM? No, but it can be done.
Most versatile bike ever.
I thought you he was clear about its downsides. I didn’t purchase mine w thoughts of ripping single track up. Entry level, which you made clear, was my thought process.

So the designers of the KLR told you what it was designed for? Interesting.
If you can't ride a KLR on single track, it's not the bike. It's the rider.
Nice Video. Very informative. 👍🏼
Thanks y'all
Thanks for watching!
This video helped me make up my mind and I bought the same bike this past Saturday.
Which is better the s or the regular I am 5 10. I think 34.7 inches is ok. I look forward to side test.
I think the reg would be good for you, I have a 2022 KLR and I'm 5'11". The suspension will drop with your body weight on the bike. Best to go to a dealer and sit on both models.
@@xjrider9851 for sure I will seat on both. But I like the looks the reg and I think it will be better off road. If I find a new 2022
I ll get it specially if I save $$.
At 5'10 I think you will be happier with the regular KLR. Sit on both if you get a chance. In the long run it would be easier to throw a lower seat on the regular bike, than trying to set up the S for a taller rider.
This is probably the technically most inaccurate review of KLR650.
Hands down this bike is no joke the best adventure bike i Have gotten. It literally only needs 1 update and its perfect.... CRUISE CONTROL".
