I got Toto IV when it was first released. I was blown away. I knew (despite the critic BS) it was a rock masterpiece and a classic. Africa is indeed, an apex song, an example of how great a song (and a band) can be.
Amid the excellence of the instruments - especially Jeff’s drums and the synth parts, I think it’s Bobby’s high register choruses that give this tune its luster - the icing, if you will. The best guitarist on earth could attempt to dazzle us…but at the end of the day it’s the human voice that most people respond to. Kimball’s’ vocals really deliver here.
If drummers tries to play the Rosanna shuffle, all they forget are the ghost notes, that made Jeff Porcaro apart from other drummers. And that's sounds not the same, and good drummers knows this, like "there is something missing playing this". Also, the percussion from Lenny Castro are off the charts, there is a lot going on in Rosanna, that is brought so subtle that it blows your mind. Other Toto songs have this too.
I completely agree. Rosanna is the perfect Yacht Rock track. If my gazillionaire friend invited me to sail to a deserted island, I would demand that she put that track on as we sailed into the sunset.
I kind of understand why they didn't think this song was going to be that be that succsesful, not my favorite Toto song at all and I find Toto to be one of the most inpiring bands of the last decades.
I would rather hear David Paich explaining AFRICA than Steve Lukather. AFRICA was actually written by -David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. The two true LEADERS and architects of TOTO.
@KristianLarsenGuitar Thanks but I've seen it. I wished Paich and Steve Porcaro would write a book on the band and their experiences in the Industry , the years as session musicians. I believe their history would be more interesting than Lukathers because their fathers were famous musicians.
Love you so much, Luke! Toto forever!! ❤❤❤

"None of us would be here without the Beatles". How true!
Oh rubbish the Beatles wear a crappy little pop band and nothing special.
MAN!!! I love Luk, Toto, Africa and LOOOOVE this interview!!! ☮️💕💕💕
Good interview with the musical brilliance and force of nature that is Steve Lukather!

Great comment
I am Detective John KIMBLE!
Some of my favorite parts of songs are what is going on during the fade outs. Steve Lukather sings my favorite Toto song, 99,

Man, we haven't heard this story before!
you've done it again!

I should be a music executive.i knew it would be a hit the first time I heard it.

And like Lennon said... without Elvis there is nothing. Game over. 😎
This song turned mo off TOTO and their subsequent albums. Their first album is the best.😊

Check out the sunset sound podcast featuring Steve Porcaro and David Paich. They talk extensively about Africa there.

@@waltersimmons946 unfortunately Porcaro couldn't write a book anymore.
@@roberteismann1929 STEVE PORCARO
Bruh! 99!!
Most boring band ever. They can play but they're vanilla songwriters compared to artists they have done sessions for
