I was a Hong Konger and thought my English is quite good ... until I moved to London last year. Here in London, I cannot understand the content of the chatting among the local people (of course when they speak to me, I can understand well since they adjust the speed and choices of words). In your past episodes, I was able to understand nearly all the English even when there were guests (and I enjoyed more for those with guests). For this episode, however, I can barely understand (less than half) of the words from your guest, Mark, and yet it was very very enjoyable to listen to as the accent is very cozy and is similar to that I can't understand here in London. For months I has been seeking of how to improve my listening of conversational English with "London Accent" (which is not "RP") , I think now I have a chance of finding some resources: I will definitely search all TV shows and podcast related to your guest Mark Steel. Thanks so much for having him as guest in your podcast.
Such a relief after hearing that I'm not the only one who struggles so much with watching movies in a foreign language. I was actually questioning myself whether I was normal. So many people say things like oh I just watched movies and picked up a language and I am like WTF how come?! I'm not saying it's not helpful, it definitely is but rather for reinforcing vocab, grama, and practicing listing skills but it is not a magic method. I won't suddenly start understanding everything without looking up for words, etc I have been watching everything in English for 3 years with subtitles but I don't know when I will be able to switch them off. So Mark's words were comforting in a way but at the same time daunting as his French must be really good if he does stands-up. Will I ever switch these bloody subtitles off or no FFS just kidding ;) ok not really, we all know how frustrating it is to want it so much and not feel much progress.
Oh, and brilliant Rick Thompson, of course!
Absolutely compelling episode! Thank you Luke. You keep allowinf me to discover new topics, people, music! Mark is a wonderful comedian, though not easy to understand at all. I just want to mention a few discoveries I made through your podcast: the lying game (and Amber & Paul); James Acaster, Elena Mutonono; Luke Nicholson; Madness; the film "This is England"; some Beatles facts and to me unknown songs; some amazing short stories (my favourite The Birthday Party"); how to use ChatGPT intelligently (The car accident)... I could go on and on. Thank you, thank you!
My daughter and I am not really good at English but she said you are a very funny guy. She just allows me to listening your podcast instead Cantonese UA-camrs talking 😊 thanks Luke!
😢
👌🏻👌🏻👍👍🇵🇱🇵🇱
I don't get much of what Mark said, but he could make me laugh and I hope I could understand when I re-listen to it
😭I found it difficult to understand Mark... but still thank you for this episode!
Anyone with musical instruments on the wall is automatically ace! Subscribed.
I want to say thank you for this channel as I recommend it to most of my students for listening🤔, phrasal verbing🙃, and just general cultural immersion 😆. Please never stop broadcasting as even as a British person I prefer to listen to your podcast rather than the radio.
It’s really fantastic to watch Mark’s interview. I learnt a lot from your recordings. Thanks Luke!
Thank a lot for yours videos. Thanks for your time. It is a pleasure listening to you. I love your accent.
I love yours podcasts! It help me a lot ❤️ Thank you 😊
I'm watching the new episode less than one hour it has been posted. Hope it's going to be as great an experience as it was before listening to each and every one of the episodes.
Just useful stuff for an EL2.
By the way I do love the way you speak, Luke: well spoken (not necessarily RP) your vocabulary richness and variety ( semantics) and syntax usage. Thank you ever so much and for being so cheerful and authentic!
GREAT EPISODE!!!! THANKS A LOT!!! I LOVE YOUR PODCAST!!! MATIAS FROM ARGENTINA
Dungeness nuclear power station is decommissioned now, but its in the only actual desert in the uk. Square miles of shingle. An amazing landscape
Hi, Mark is gorgeous!!! That's English I want to learn😂😂😂😂👋👋👋👋compliment to you too!!! ✌️✌️✌️
Hi Luke , lots of love from Azerbaijan🎉 Seeing you is like seeing an old friend, You are the best English teacher in the world❤ Wish you and your family happiness and all the best 😊
Definitely something to enjoy.
👋 Ännu ett trevligt avsnitt. Jag förstod nästan allt ni sa förutom något enstaka ord här och där. Jag gillar att du pratar tydligt och ofta repeterar dig. Tack Luke
I was in France and a big white van pulled onto and blocked the pavement, a woman with a toddler and pram berated him, to which he replied
'est ce-la France' as she had to walk into the oncoming traffic. Priceless
Hi, Luke! This talk was really interesting, Mark is very funny, but I must admit I struggled to understand him 😬. It was hard for me to follow him. Anyway, I think that after 30 minutes I started to get used to his accent and I could start to grasp part of what he said. Thanks for your work, Luke. Greetings from Argentina, Tomás.
Thank you for this video!
Hi,Luke and Mark form Bangkok, Thailand. 😁😎
I'm listening to your podcast, I'm love your English
I’ m glad to see you again 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
I also wanted to add that you're right Luke we ( I assume lots of your listeners ) didn't know your guest but thanks to you we got to know him and it was a big deal and pleasure for us too. It was extremely useful and that is exactly what we need. Also, I think your idea of the BBC sound tour sounds fabulous as well. I'm actually attempting at listening to it for the third time. I need to say when I came across your podcast actually I don't know how it happened as I didn't know what podcast means and wasn't aware there was more content like yours, also I got so excited that I can understand a native person that I listened to you only. Don't take it personally I am sure you won't but now you're just too easy lol I still like your podcast but as you know we need to broaden our horizons, listen to different accents, etc. My problem is there are many podcasts for learning English have transcripts but I don't really need them whereas most podcasts for natives don't have them but would be very helpful. I am trying to listen to the drama, I know maybe not be so interesting and educating for some but that is where a lack of understanding. I can listen to the news or Ted talks about a huge event or specific subject but when comes down to meaningless chat at a pub, with neighbors, family, and friends that is where I struggle the most. Also, stand-ups, comedies, and tv shows often refer to celebrities, and politics that's why is very useful to get to know them so keep on doing a great job I am very grateful and looking forward to your next episodes. Seems like I have carried away a bit but wanted to provide proper feedback :)
I love this EP. I was quite frustrated when I was first in the middle of Aussies from various parts of Australia partying. It took me a while before I could come to understand them. They were talking like the fastest train on earth with so many different accents. Amazingly, they could keep their conversation going without me to be sure whether or not they followed what they were saying. However, it was fun.
Thanks a lot for this interesting episode,Luke. Mark seems to be a really nice guy, really cheerful, kind, enthusiastic, genuine..,but he's truly got an East end London accent!. I must say I don't like it that much. There's nothing from Kent or south London in his accent, to be honest. He sounds completely Cockney to me, unlike you.
I speak French fluently and I knew the expression "poser un lapin à quelqu'un" I was flabbergasted when You didn't seem to know this expression after marrying a French and living there for so many years, how come?😂 Don't tell me you haven't learnt French after so many years!😆 but you do seem and I'm pretty sure you are open- minded and cosmopolitan like your lovely dad!😊
Looking forward to listening to his new podcast about the new prime minister. Needless to say, I do love all your podcasts, even in those wherethe wanderingtakes nowhere😂, so thank you ever so much for everything you give us, you are truly lovely! I'm so grateful to you and your family, especially your dad, Rick.
All the best, Luke😄❤

Hi Luke. I wish I have a billion likes to give you for every single of your videos.
You are the best
Luke rocks!
Please read about UA-cam algorithms too and how to use it to grow your audience .Good luck our brilliant teacher
Excellent podcast Luke! I've been to Paris once and people did not want to speak English on the street, even in the airport! Is this like that? By the way, I'm from Argentina, I teach English, a teacher here recommended your podcasts. Watch my videos with the Coldplay concert here in Buenos Aires. Cheers!
His accent is a little bit difficult and he speaks very fast but your guest is funny and he has a beautiful soul
His accent reminds me of Alfie Solomons. Love this episode, Man.
To anyone interested check out Mark on The Bugle podcast.
Hello, Luke! Would be great to listen what your dad think about Rishi Sunak and his political decisions.
Congrats👍You are very good at your business and i feel my english devoloping but hearing scotish accent make my moral down 😮
Hello! I have discovered your admirable channel today and liked it a lot. Therefore I wanted to listen to all of your podcasts from the very beginning but unfortunately I found that a great number of them are missing. Is there a way of solving this problem? And I would like to thank you and to express my deep appreciation of your work (!)

Thanks Luke. we are not skeleton’s 😂
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Hi guys, is it "Beat their horns" or "Beep their horns" ? thx for answers!
Beep
Looks like Ex first minister ... Without comb his hair... 🤭🤭
I thought exactly the same 🤣😂
Just leave a comment
just like a comment :D
Hi Luck how are you?
Can you give Amber and Paul channel name please
His accent isn't clear I am mad at myself because I don't make progress in learning English when I hear some native speakers.
Feeling the same here
There have to be a tiny dementi about word "rabbit" in polish. Rabbit is rabbit, nothing more. But if you said "yea-bunny", it might be received a bit offending depends on context. Yea-bunny is similar to word "jebany", simply speaking, means "fucking" and like in english, can also be used as offend or admiration (ex. It was fucking good!). Luke, love u bro. And please don't get confused by using swear words - if we wanted listen to unnatural british english, we would have been listening fucking BBC 😜
It was very difficult to understand...
।😊 😊
steal my de6bit express card..
Luke you're an excellent teacher 'but you need to renew your website and make short videos for common errors ' vocabulary ' don't say this say that and so on this will make your channel more popular.
And be funny in it your have a sense of humour use it
I think there’s plenty of content like that already
@@LukesEnglishPodcast yes there is ,I am your channel 'fan and hope you the best
it's so hard to understand him
Wow, I didn't know you are from Australia, many dangerous and poisonous animals.
I’m not. Don’t know where you got that idea!
@@LukesEnglishPodcast well, I must have missunderstood, my listening is still quite bad 😅
@@SniperManfred I said I am from Solihull, which I guess sounds a bit like ‘stralia.
I can understand you very well when you speak, but I had a really hard time understanding this guy. Huge disappointment for me. Oddly enough, I'm so mad at him (short off come on, do you know that your audience is learning the language) when I should be mad at myself for making such slow progress in English.
Seems silly to be angry with either Mark or yourself. His accent is not the one you will have learned. But if you come to the UK you will hear a huge variety of accents, and RP (which is sort of what Luke's is) isn't going to get you very far in Middlesbrough or Glasgow.
