This is a detailed look at Z banding results after printing single colored test towers on the K2 Plus, which Creality provided for testing and review. I considered printing a multicolor version, but it would have taken over 100 hrs and required over 3kg of filament. Multicolor filament waste on AMS style systems is pretty extreme, which might be a topic for another video.

Why not print the identical three towers on three or five machines (K2 Plus, X1C, MK4S, N4Max, SV08) and then put them side by side under the light? This would be more helpful if it had a reference.

I don't know why there's any hate (coming from a Bambu user). Creality made a good machine with the K2 Plus. I think lots of people have a bitter taste in their mouth from the Ender 3 days when nothing "just worked" (at least not for long) as printers these days are almost expected to do. We have to remember the X1C was released in 2022 so it's 2 years old at this point, plenty of time for the competition to catch up or even pass them in certain areas.

No one dislikes the ender 3... it was a great printer for it's time and the issues it comes with are expected at the price point. What annoyed me with Creality was the lack of innovation. They were charging more and more for printers with the same stupid design choices (like that shitty bowden extruder) Even the "high end/ industrial" Creality machines came with the same extruders and hot ends that their cheaper things had. Also, let's not forget that the flagship Creality printer before the bambu copycat trend was the freaking ender 7.

It was fun seeing Aurora review the K2 Plus where she essentially concluded that the K2 Plus is always faster than the X1C and there is no real difference in print quality. Every time I saw a Bambu fan boy rebuttal attempt I imagined the angry NPC guy. 🙂 Bambu will be releasing a new product soon and I'm certain they haven't been resting on their laurels. 3D printers have gotten a lot better in just the last year.

Creality doesn't recommend to print lower than 0.2 mm in multi colour. That should be a joke for that price point. I can print with my A1 mini in 0.16mm or lower and some multi coloured prints even look better on that 356€ machine with the same layer height.
Creality had good prices and okayish to good machines for the prices but that was the only thing.
I said it from the beginning, wait for Bambus next printer and decide then. The K2 plus will be cheaper by then and other problems with the K2 will arrive in the meantime. Sorry, but this machine is and never was a Bambu Lab killer and I said it from the beginning. Especially when I heard that the input shaping is still bad and there were already fixes. if you only want to print in colour with 0.2mm or higher for that price, then go for it. I will buy myself a regular A1 for Christmas and decide next year which CoreXY. The Prusa seems sexy, but still the price man. At least they have a good MMU.
Just fyi my first printer was a Creality and I learned a lot about printers and Klipper. But besides that everything was horrible. The hotend fan was already defective after two months. 😂

I'm not a Bambu fanboy, but I do own two Bambu printers and three Creality printers. In my 6 years of 3d printing experience, I've found both are phenomenal when new. However, my Creality printers ALWAYS require more maintenance as time passes. This includes - CR10S Pro, CR10, Ender 3, Ender 3 Pro, K1, and K1 Max. Contrarily, I bought a Bambu Lab X1C when it was brand new and it has required nothing more than routine maintenance like nozzle replacement, greasing rods, Bowden tube replacement, and snugging belts. The same has held true for my P1P.

The prints aren't... Horrible? Bed wobble does not seem to be a major issue, so that's good. There were definitely noticeable VFA across the entirety of each print. It's definitely not the worst quality from a stock printer, but I can't say I'd be singing its praises this high. My Plus4 produces far fewer VFA with seemingly better layer stacking and less Z-banding, though it is a bit smaller. I do completely agree that showing most prints in harsh lighting will make them look bad, and most reviewers simply don't do it, but there are flaws here.

Coming from a Voron background and being used to that quality of printing, I can say those prints are unacceptable as far as I am concerned.

Side note, I've noticed many filament brands are falling off in quality. Once you remove z-banding as an issue you will quickly notice inconsistent filament and uneven flow from basic motion variances. It used to be 'cheap' brands or generic filament were +/- 0.05mm but now many "+/- 0.02mm" measure about +/- 0.04mm. Just picked up some ABS+ High Speed from Micro Center and noticed they are at least honest about it and show +/- 0.05mm advertised, and it shows on a print i did today 😅(HGX lite extruder with a Micro Swiss CM2 Volcano nozzle)

Haha, argue with yourself. 3D printing was originally intended for DIY enthusiasts. However, technology evolves daily, and it seems like a company is being unfairly criticized for upgrading its technology when someone essentially copied their platform. K2 plus will certainly be the next printer I get. Love my K1 Max. Had issues with VFA's, then found it was from one of the belts being slightly longer than the other when doing my first belt change, causing the gantry to be of slightly. Since the belt change, everything is so much better. Does PA6-CF and ASA parts really well, especially with a modified insulated chamber, but the K2 having a heated chamber is really nice, as well as the AMS. I backed Co-Prints Chroma kit, and just got it in last week for my K1 Max and Neptune 4 Plus, but yet to get it working. What I can't understand is why companies don't start implementing "Active Bed Leveling" (where you have 3 leadscrew/motor pairs operating independently to each other, and the bed has mechanisms in place to allow it to tilt to compensate for offsets - I know it probs isn't called that, but I can't remember the proper name for it). I know it's a mod Voron enthusiasts have access to and I myself have the Hydra conversion on my ender 5+ Mercury build. It's super stable due to having that 3 points of contact, extremely accurate and is only a couple of lines of trig code to implement (since auto bed leveling already uses a coordinate system to plot reference points, it simply calculates differentials in respect to each motor to determine which one needs to adjust it's Z height). The extra power consumption, processing, time spent in operation or even additional unit weight aren't really substantial enough to justify a lack of OEM implementation, especially when bambu and creality have already used tri-leadscrew setups in their bed before.

Great review, Natan! I have a question: do you have any information about the possibility of using the CFS system on the K1 printers? Also, based on what Creality developed and improved in the K2, do you think these enhancements could be implemented on the K1, either through updates or some kind of upgrade?

Thank you Nathan for this video. I have seen video with much worse print quality. There might be also issues in quality of manufactoring of printer. Especially first line of the printers. But in general structural point of view, it would be better to have 3 level screws for Z-axle. It is wonder why Creality decided to do it with only two? I my opinion there should not be any bedsligers any more, because we all know there is few mechanical and dynamical issues with them. Last night I assembled TTS 450 Pro cnc router. I checked all axis tolerances before installation and thighten all the screws in the frame. So I can expect it should be in good tolerances. Maybe those who have issues with this printer, need to check that everything is in line, squere and tight. True professional can admit when he is wrong and say it. Or say sorry, I was wrong. This is the only way to really produce something respected results.

purge block is funky because of input shaping. small rounding in max speed to esteps adds a tiny offset between layers. offset difference overflows eventually and resets. the os doesn't care enough to add small esteps to make the purge tower perfect....mostly cause it's a garbage piece and speed is king.

I'm relatively new to 3d printing, so, no real bias to any brand. I have a K1c (my first printer) and love it. It's been flawless. I wanted something with a larger build plate, so bought the Sovol sv08. After dealing with some minor issues, that arguably the manufacturer should have dealt with, it's been a solid performer. I placed my order for the K2 as soon as they opened it up and am now just waiting for delivery (early December I believe) as I want a multi material/color capable printer and why not buy one with a big build plate. My first 3D Printer was an ender 3 v2. I have been using it for 2 years now. I did not really have any issues with it. I have done a few things to it. Auto bed leveling, belt synced dual z lead screws with only one stepper motor. I would say the biggest print quality difference was the dual lead screws and POM lead nuts. The ABL was just a quality of life upgrade it really didn’t make the prints any better. I love my little ender 3. I just want a printer for larger sizes with exotic filament. I was looking at the Qidi X-Max-3 but the option for multi color is my interest in the K2.

One cause of helplessly looking for the cause of z banding is filament driers...
If you dry your filament in a heated spool dryer but don't rotate the spool the lower half of the spool closer to the heat will be drier than the upper half which will reabsorb moisture as it passes by.
This causes what looks like Z Banding but it is once per spool circumference.

I think the problem is, Creality have had a lot of issues in the past with poor printers (The only reason my CRF10-S5 didn't go out of the window is it wouldn't fit!) and its a case of once bitten, twice shy.
Whereas bambu came along and got a really good printer on the first try.
Its like Creality have broken trust and it'll take a bit to get that back. I've been tempted with the K range (I have a bambu) and about the only issue I have is the noise. I need to see one in person I think.

The Carbon X1 is a very decent printer for a decent price, the MK4s is a totally different printer, but decent and very reliable for many years, but at quite a high price. The new Prusa Core1 is more comparabe, but the Prusa MMU is less user friendly. Price is quite decent though.

    • @windforward9810

I think Bambu will be dropping the price of the X-1C down to the price point of the P1S and ending the production of P1S and P1P some time next year. There new printer could be priced at about the same or a little higher then the K2 but because the missed putting in out at the same time as the K2 I bet it will be the same or a little lower. Bottom line the K2 is out and slowly being shipped and the new Bambu printer is an unknown item unknown release date. So as a Bambu fan I have a X-1C and just bought a P1S which I regret buying (should have bought an other X-1C). I bought the P1S only because I needed other printer how and my K2 will not ship till end of November or later. So let’s bury the X-1 they are now being considered older tech, just like the Ender 3’s which are only good for Boat anchors now.

I look at some of the things that Clough42 has made the layer lines are virtually impossible to see. Not sure if you covered what nozzle size and layer height you printed here, so maybe that was it.
