The Mysticism of Plotinus

- Mysticism has gained popularity in our day, but it’s far from a new idea. In this brief clip, R.C. Sproul contrasts the true communion shared between Christ and His people with the mystical teachings of the philosopher Plotinus.

This man has gone straight to the point of the most important area within the philosophy of Plotinus - such a stunning presentation and thank you 🙏🏽 but I know there will be people who disagree
True union with God
i will worship my Only Lord and Savior Jesus Christ forever and ever.
good
It is important to recognize wisdom wherever it exists, Jesus was a very wise man but not the only one we should appreciate all.

Mind is Christ
The one blesses good teachers! Plotinus is back!
A few qualifications for those interested:
"The highest being is called the One" - this isn't accurate. The One is not a being; it is utterly without contingency (its existence relies on nothing else), and therefore beyond particularity (and therefore not "a" being). It is ineffable, and all that there is (i.e. the *One*). And in no way is it pantheism, because the One is contained fully in nothing, even as all is contingent on it; for this, we can perhaps speak of his idea of the World-Soul, but certainly not the One (for more, read Stephen Mackenna's introduction of Plotinus' Enneads). At best, we can call Plotinus' idea of God panentheism (as immanent/present as transcendent/other), which is of course very compatible with Christian tradition (Aquinas, Origen, Augustine, Maximus the Confessor, etc.)...
Also, within Christian tradition has always been the idea of theosis (likeness or union with God), which is of course more than the communion of saints. It is unreserved intimacy with God. Plotinus only seeks to bring this intimacy-this love which erases all boundaries between the lover and the beloved-to the point that visions of particularity become synonymous with universality (again, with the One); there is no longer any distinction. The Greek for this is henosis. If the ego disappears, it can no longer be said that it is *us* that become divine (unless qualified): indeed, if we become God, we are no more ("we" here meaning the ego which distinguishes ourselves from the Other-the essence of sin, to my mind).
Very cool that R.C. Sproul teaches these things; they should be taught!
I highly recommend Eric Perl's books for a lucid and accurate presentation of Platonism and neo-Platonism. Start with "Thinking Being," and if you're interested in apophatic or negative theology, try "Theophany."
Nicely put. I hope more people take the time to read what you have written. It moves into an obviously difficult area, given that we are stuck with having to communicate via dualistic words and logic. Even so, you have clarified something that is very special about Plotinus' views. Thank you for writing.
Just found your channel and love it.Thank you so much. Subbed.
This is incorrect. Plotinus did not teach that the individual becomes lost in God, as a raindrop in the ocean. Plotinus in the Enneads teaches that union with God does not extinguish the individual self. I am a professor of religion and philosophy who teaches Christianity and Platonism and what this fella is saying is flat-out incorrect.
Is there a spot you teach that you stream online - what you teach is something I'm interested to learn more about.
Just a short clip, but right to the point. Where is the full lecture?
Hi,
Where can I find the rest of the lecture? This clip seems to have ended way too early I think.
It didn't seem to start at the beginning either.
Where can one find the full lecture?
For so many mysticism means something insane, the term within philosophy for mystical experience is henosis...
Things like John 17:20-26 make it very clear this is precisely what Jesus' mission is about...
Everything short of that and calling yourself Christian is erroneous.
We see in 1 Corinthians 4:1 that an Apostle is one who has had the mysteries of God revealed to them...
Most Christians think Apostles were something exclusive to the past, it's because the mysteries have been lost...
Yet they're still right there if you have eyes to see, 1 Corinthians 2:12-16
There seems to be shock in the speakers voice when bringing up destroying your personal identity, look at Luke 14:26 and Galatians 2:19-21...
Even things like John 14:10 and Hebrews 5:7 make clear this is exactly the state of Christ...
Uhh, some don't translate Hebrews 5:7 to "submission" and they are wrong... but John 14:10 still shows the extent of that submission.
1 Corinthians 4 closes with an important point too: those with the Spirit have a tangible power...
You can sense it in them, especially if you're receptive yourself.
Even my own mother, when I dropped into the Spirit during a dialog, stopped to comment that she can feel it...
I tend not to stay in this space because I see nothing wrong with normal experience, yet if the Spirit has something for me to do I have little say.
KRISHNA IS TRUTH
@Daniel Smith you know this how?
are you emotional? Remember that emotions is not truth

Emotions are changing depending on stimulus
They are real but not lasting
Why would you want to deny a natural part of one’s being
If known truly they transcend themselves by their own power
Krsna consciousness is the highest emotion of love of god the inconceivable supreme being
