    The thing that really pisses me off though is that anything that has a voxel-based art style is automatically a Minecraft clone.

    Minecraft is liberty. It isn't a maze for gamers to run toward a specified goal, it is a blank canvas, a brush, and a palette of colors. But it is also a virtual life in which the player can meet and overcome challenges. These challenges are similar enough to prehistoric survival that they stimulate the brain's pleasure centers. when they are overcome. Combine this with the ability to collaborate and co-operate and you have the potential for a uniquely satisfying experience.

    Minecraft hasn't been surpassed because it spawned three entirely new genres:
    1. First Person Survival: while The Long Dark and many other games aren't considered successors to minecraft, they owe a lot of their success to it.
    2. Crafter: Searching for components to craft to get other components to achieve self-selected goals flies in the face of the power-driven progression systems that have proliferated in every genre. It's amazing no MMOs have a crafting system as good as minecraft, but that's because they chase power players to the exclusion of everyone else.
    3. Art Simulator: Minecraft is the 3d version of Mario Paint, which itself never spawned any sequels or imitators. I think this aspect is what really elevates it beyond the level of a work of art and into an art form. Imagine composing a song which is itself an instrument: that is the phenomenal power of games.
    Now I just want a game that does for story-telling what minecraft did for 3d sculpting.

    The thing about minecraft is it supports people modding the game and lets playing while a lot of companies fight against it. That has created the best community I have ever found and is why minecraft is more then a game I like it is a game I respect.

      Teirusu155 I think the biggest difference between Minecraft and Terraria and Starbound, in my opinion, is the scale of the playerbase as Minecraft to my knowledge trumps both of them in that regard and as such has more widely influenced a generation than either of the other two games. Starbound has a tutorial and Terraria has the Guide while Minecraft throws you in with the only help being in the achievements section which was added after many people were already playing the game in it's incomplete state.

    The quality of Minecraft's gameplay could be in part caused by:
    -There is a lot to learn how to use, but it is easy to get the hang of. and not painfully complicated.
    -There is (as covered in video) a lot to explore, so it doesn't get boring fast.
    -There is infinite ability to be creative, in part because...
    -You can do generally anything, and there is infinite freedom.
    -It was built with attributes unseen before, making it all the much more interesting.
    If another game was built with all of those qualities, I think that there is a chance that it could take off.

      To be fair Terraria did fine in its own respect. It might have started out as a clone of Minecraft, but I find that it can be far more structured towards single player play. This is caused by, as you said rather defined goals. At the same time, this is not necessarily a limit, as they're largely in place for guidelines. There is nothing that forces you to go accomplish these things, and as such you're free to create and follow your own agenda.
      Another thing to bear in mind is that both games are limitless, though Terraria slightly more so than Minecraft. The common argument that follows is that you can indeed get to the sides, top and bottom of a given world; so in what way is it ever expanding? The difference is that any given Terraria character can go to any number of worlds, creating a new one every time. So both games are "virtually endless".
      In the end of it all, Minecraft seems to be geared towards those desiring to build, whereas Terraria seems to cater to those who wish to have combat and dungeon crawling; in other words they both excel at their own given fields.

      rust is similar but on the lowest level
      its better to say rust is closest to DayZ
      Although I would say 7Days to Die would probably be the closest thing to being Minecrafts' successor and its only in its alpha/beta stage
      when its done Minecraft and 7Days to Die will be neck n neck in play/popularity
      probably.

    Terraria and now Starbound sort of falls into the category of reasonably successful minecraft-esque clones. Add into that games like Don't Starve and now Rust and you have at least a few examples that fit the bill.

    mojang basically greenlit the indie market

    • @totallygrotnot
      @totallygrotnot 8 років тому +1

      If you look at the indie market before and after minecraft, you'll notice a trend.
      Before minecraft there were only a handful of popular indie games, like serious sam for example, but after minecraft, the indie market started booming. People noticed that there's a market to be filled, after someone succeeded.
      That's just how things work...
      If I started making moombahton, and got extremely wealthy doing so, the moombahton scene would see a massive rise in producers - even successful ones. Sure I didn't invent moombahton, and there were some reasonably sized people in the market, but moombahton mostly stayed underground despite that.

      +totallygrotnot Tools to make games have vastly increased in their availability (free) thus allowing people to make games with close to 0 investments. The platforms for releasing games, such as steams greenlight have also made things much more easier.
      Minecraft is the most successful indie game out there, it might have changed the minds of people behind the game engine and platform companies. We cant tell for sure.
      Super Meat Boy, Limbo, Braid are couple successful indie titles that came out during minecrafts initial alpha launch. Even though their sales numbers weren't as high, they had big impacts on the scene. At the time when they were released (2008-2010) i would say bigger impact than minecraft at that point.

    • @ArvidOlson
      @ArvidOlson 8 років тому +1

      +totallygrotnot no, braid

    • @happmacdonald
      @happmacdonald 8 років тому

      +JeiAsHei I doubt it because the three that you mention started out as payware while Minecraft started out as freeware, and as Minecraft turned to a subscription model and more people noticed they also slipped into the cracks of 2009-2010 weekends when the auth server was down and anybody could play (as I did version alpha 1.10).
      Also, your three were released as full products while Minecraft was continually updated before people's eyes, features added, tinkered with, sometimes removed and bugs fixed roughly every week during the early development cycle. This kept it fresh in the spotlight *for years* while the other games had their 15 minutes and the audience moved on.
      As a result of all of this, I had "heard about" (but not cared about) super meatboy before trying minecraft, and had not even heard about braid or limbo until a year or two later.

    Why hasn't there been another minecraft? As for why there's no Minecraft 2, it's because they don't need to make a "Minecraft 2". It's essentially an MMO that has small patches throughout the year adding new content and than one major patch for their big content release.
    All it is is a sandbox building game which has been done, the only difference is that it was the first big Voxel-based game. It blew up and parents like it because it isn't violent and any age can play it. A bunch of similar games would be Terraria, Trove, The Forest, Everquest Next, Peria Chronicles, Castle Story, Guncraft, 7 Days to die, StarForge, Rust, Ace of Spades, Tug.. The list goes on.

    Minecraft is self-expression at its finest in a game. The world is an expression of the users' interests, imagination, and hard work. Even your avatar is blank, silent, and expressionless, more of a tool than a character.
    Minecraft has a unique blend of both openness and restriction. You're capable to create when you want, but you're limited often on scope. With every block taking up 1 cubic meter, you can't make things that are much smaller, like thin walls or floors.
    Sometimes, it's this restriction that can get people to think harder, outside the box, to come up with inventive solutions for problems. The game has a known set of simple rules, that anyone can understand and command. You can make better, more interactive game worlds by hunching over a professional game develop software, but those take years of dedication to gain basic proficiency.
    Why haven't we seen another? We've seen clones, sure, but I think the big publishers are still yet to narrow down the true magic of Minecraft, so they can use the core mechanics and concepts, but put a new coat of paint on it.

    I think there's a certain kind of conceit among "AAA" developers that Minecraft isn't a "real game," and, in that sense, it might be a paradigm shifter.
    For whatever reason, the AAA scene is just terrified of games that aren't a strictly linear experience with "cinematic" set-pieces. Even AAA "sandbox" games, like you mentioned, aren't procedurally generated and are essentially just asymmetrical linear games.
    What Minecraft does that these developers are scared of is entrust all the power to the player. AAA companies are obsessed with making their own experience, almost like film-makers, and almost treat the player as a kind of nuisance at times. Yahtzee likes to talk about this a lot.
    The idea of creating actual emergent gameplay is a terrifying prospect to them, and the head executives likely irrationally dismiss it out of hand as being an unprofitable venture.
    But, of course, it's the _one thing_ that games can do that no other medium could ever even come close to doing. It's a completely revolutionary way of looking at entertainment, play and even art.
    By creating an interactive, emergent system instead of a traditional game, the audience is now creating their own experience, which is way more autonomy than any hand-crafted game could ever offer you.

    • @Enke796
      @Enke796 10 років тому

      You make it sound like gaming industry consists of some evil goblin creatures who are afraid of holy paladin wrath.
      Maybe there are no AAA games with procedurally generated environments because because they are dull and lifeless, just like Minecraft's world. There is no reason to explore it.
      Maybe AAA developers create their own stories because customers want it. Bioshock, Last of us, Mass Effect etc. sold well, a lot of people liked it, even if there was no freedom given to the player by devs.

  • @SpooderW
    @SpooderW 10 років тому +4

    Minecraft has influenced modern game design a lot already. It's showed how willing people are to accept low-fidelity graphics, so a lot of indie games are now leaning towards more abstract art directions.
    Crafting systems have also become more ubiquitous, especially in AAA games. They're usually sort of a tacked on afterthought, but they definitely exist thanks to Minecraft.
    And there are no shortages of games that take HUGE influences from minecraft and add a little twist. Games like Cube World, Guncraft, ect are all essentially Minecraft with a few mechanics added/tweaked.
    The idea of a survival sandbox has also exploded thanks to Minecraft. With games like Rust and likely even DayZ existing thanks to Minecraft showing how rewarding it can be to just survive when thrust into a hostile world.

  • @AshlxnBlazeUniquee

    Minecraft in a nutshell:
    -Theres never going to be a sequel, unless Microsoft decides to. Markus (Notch) would probabaly never make a sequel, until he sold it to Microsoft.
    -Minecraft is huge, yeah. But usually creators of tv shows, movies, books, video games, would do what the fans want. So what a lot of the fans want is to make Minecraft just keep updating, instead of making "Minecraft The Sequel."
    -A lot of us would love another Minecraft, IF theres a lot of the same stuff in the old version, and just add new stuff, like an update.
    -Some facts that he is saying is *true*. Because, yes there has been a few little spin offs, ex: Survival Craft. And yes, a lot of people have played Survival Craft, because they love Minecraft. But Survival Craft isen't ever going to be as Minecraft, because its totally different in ways. And to be honest, I love Survival Craft too.
    And obviously, the reason *WHY* Minecraft doesn't have a sequel, is because its not a fully released yet. Which means, its not finished.

      Ashlxn Blaze Minecraft's "full-release" was mostly because Notch didn't know what exactly to call done but thought it should be released. To me it seems like 1.5 or 1.6 was when Minecraft I was basically done. Since then, it seems like unofficial Minecraft 2 released in slow motion, bit by bit. I don't think it will be ever really "done" as long as its selling. But technically it is "fully released" in that its not alpha or beta.There is also a game called Rising World that comes across as trying to make a kind of Minecraft HD (natural parts of the world all look realistic) but I don't know if it will get done or go anywhere. Right now it doesn't seem that interesting due to lack of content (but I'd say the same thing of alpha Minecraft versions that actually started becoming popular).

    Maybe its just me but, in the last 3 or so years 70% of the games I see coming out that aren't already part of a pre-existing franchise have either a huge focus on sand-boxing or at least try to include it in someway. Just to clarify I'm not talking about GTA or Elder Scrolls styles of sand-boxing where you can go anywhere and do many many different things. I'm referring to a sandbox that lets you construct something either of ones own design or pre-made. Last year in particular I saw so many Early Games (alphas) that tried (and were never heard from again) to take the Minecraft idea of building your own world and add more it, usually in the way of better graphics, models, and animation.
    I think the main reason there "hasn't been another Minecraft" is because the gaming industry doesn't fully understand why a sandbox is compelling. I believe that Minecraft may just had been the most basic and boiled down version of a sandbox at that time, and was easy enough for everyone to understand. Of course now it's much more with all the dungeons and boss fighting you can do. I think once we start to truly understand why people find creating things out of other things in video games compelling we will see the "New Minecraft(s)" who's core machines revolve around these basic sandbox ideals.

    • @TheErudite21
      @TheErudite21 9 років тому

      Actually, I think its simply because its the most simple and compelling version of the genre. It is the average (as in it set the bar) and the next one will have to beat that... So most likely be the exact same but with better graphics and include stuff like underwater and in space exploration.
      Such an environment is currently impossible. So there is no way to actually do another Minecraft without making the exact same game (which is of course, pointless).
      NMS is a big step in the right direction for a successor, but only indirectly, because its purpose is first a space sim/adventure rather than world building or whatever.
      An example of this is WOW. It set the standard for fantasy MMORPGs (was basically the first of its kind) and no other game has (or can) do better without doing the same thing. GW2 is pretty good, but no where near as popular because many of its innovations are kind of more shots in the dark than anything else. Why hasn't there been another WoW or WOW-killer? It's competitors are far more numerous and gained a lot of popularity, because the original is not in and of itself simple. Thus other games could gain by making it simpler, or having different mechanics and stuff.
      The same thing can be said for LOL, or
      So what you said about it being "the most basic and boiled down version of a sandbox... and is easy enough for everyone to understand." is the answer. Its very easy to understand *why* people enjoy creating things and such because Lego and the Sims and the idea of modding and making parodies all more or less riff on the same thing. The problem here is that it is (probably) technologically impossible to do a new minecraft because it *is* the soul of the sandbox genre. The only thing that can top it is if you had different graphics, more environments, and _maybe_ AI/monsters to interact with as well... and emotes... gotta love the emotes.
      Btw, what I mean by technological is that you would need a better/more efficient system to voxels, AI, computer rendering, etc if you wanted anything other than 8-bit graphics.

With other games, like Battlefield, it is easy to make a similar game and it takes less people to make it work. Similar, Facebook is just about the mass use of people, and that same mass not wanting to change their social platform into Google+, for example. If, and only if, a grand group of one platform moves to the other, it can be similar as the original.

    I would argue that at its core, Minecraft isn't a game at all. It is a toolkit that provides a way to experience CAD and game design that is based on real life interaction. It gives you a stock set of primitve graphics with which to work with so as to eliminate that barrier to entry.
    An amazing example of this was Little Big Planet on PS3. Even though it came with superbly designed levels, it was really a phenomenon because of its graphically based game engine that worked seamlessly on a CONSOLE and provided tools to let a community spawn some amazing games and films. If you've never UA-camd the top LBP levels created by the community, it will amaze you.
    I would also add Neverwinter Nights in the conversation for the PC as it was this type of "game" as well in the D&D world.
    I hope more developers put time and effort in to letting their fans develop for themselves and become creators as well as consumers.

      +axel Roman Technically your right. The world generation has a limit, in earlier version of minecraft, the worlds were huge, but there was a place to where the world creation algorithms stopped working, that place is nicked named "Farlands". So Farlands is pretty much the end/edge of the minecraft world. In the game farlands is so mathematically far away that it is almost unreachable compared to earlier versions of the game. Also gameplay wise, the "story/adventure" mode ends after going through the portal of the End after killing the EnderDragon. So minecraft is technically not an infinite explorer as depicted in the video.

The vast array of objects are also hard not to clone, as many are real world examples that are impossible to reinvent in the same style.

    It actually already has changed many many games. One of the first things that pop to mind is Skyrim's dlc, Hearthfire I think it was called. It lets you make your own house. Or how you can break down almost everything into scrap and make it into blocks that you can build with in the upcoming Fallout 4 game. Minecraft has made almost every person who has played it want to become a game creator. Now when I play Final fantasy, for instance, I feel so trapped because I can't interact with the ground below my feet, or dig out an annoying rock that's in my way. Game devs are responding to this very well I think. I'm 15 and after playing Minecraft for over 10 thousand hours( yes,I'm ashamed) and having to learn the ins and outs of how it's coded just so I could download and install a new mod, I've learned more then I ever thought I would. I for one, am totally gonna be a game designer. I mean I already know a lot of JavaScript, and that's without paying for a single lesson!

Sure, DF has been doing it for years, but it's also a niche market and the cost isn't required for full access to the game. Minecraft made the concept mainstream, and that has caused a massive paradigm shift in the gaming market. It's much wider than just gameplay.

    Actually minecraft DID spawn a successful game. Or, minecraft was the spawn. Minecraft was the inspiration for a game actually in the video- dwarf fortress. Minecraft was supposed to be a 3D version of dwarf fortress, but turned out to be it's own game, after inspiration from infiniminer, which ALSO had inspiration from DF. Big similarities do exist with MC and DF though. Like you said in the video, throwing you in with no instructions at all is one of them. A few more are:
    Randomly generated world
    Focus on game is mining and building
    Pixelated (well, DF is ascii)
    No rules
    Can make anything
    Can destroy anything
    Monster attacks
    Survival
    So technically Minecraft is a clone of a clone

      Notch was directly inspired by Dwarf Fortress, and Minecraft is, in many ways, a MUCH simpler game, to play, and in terms of content.
      The point of the video--as I see it--is that there hasn't been a clone of Minecraft that is as popular, or more popular, than Minecraft.

    I'd say the better reason is copyright. Something as simple as pixilated boxes leaves a lot of room for interpretation and law suis. For example, I wanted a create a game that simulated organic chemistry and physics in a simplistic enviornment. Then I imagined what it would look like. Well, the idea would still be mining for chemicals. The chemicals are boxy. The characters boxy. My lab room is still boxy. My tools still boxy.
    While gameplay will be different, the design is still...well boxy, and that'll never get past the picky copyright BS we have today....so I decided not to program it.

    There have actually been lots of 'minecrafts' as people are only just getting past the point of cashing in with minecraft clones. The most promising minecraft inspired game right now seems to be starbound because it is doing enough of it's own thing to get by.
    The worst clone I would have to say is fortresscraft. That thing took advantage of a lack of minecraft on Xbox and I hear it is still alive. It is minecraft with HD graphics and from the original trailers they planned to release features in episodes to get more cash.

    • @1Rab
      @1Rab 10 років тому +2

      Please don't make my head explode. First, Starbound is not a clone of Minecraft, it would more likely be a clone of Terraria. Second, Minecraft, Starbound, and Terraria are all completely different games. Minecraft is a 3D voxel type survival game with an infinite map that concentrates on the aspects of redstone, 3D building and digging. Terraria is a 2D survival game with a non-infinite map that focuses more on loot. Starbound is a 2D survival game with race selection and a story. Saying they are all clones of eachother is like calling The Elder Scrolls a clone of The Legend of Zelda. It is like calling Battlefield a clone of DOOM.

    • @ConnerHall

      Rab At no point did he specifically mention Starbound or Terraria...

    • @SeanSultan
      @SeanSultan 10 років тому

      Rab I don't think that Pilli or Game/Show were talking about clones so much as games that were similar but went beyond "clone." In that respect terraria and starbound are actually very closely related in that there is no ultimate objective or "end of game" and that you use the materials of your world to artificially add to and improve it. The fact that they are missing a dimension and have other in game mechanics does not mean that they are dissimilar, the games are in fact modeled from MineCraft. It just means that they aren't clones, which Pilli never said they were and was what Game/Show is, more or less, looking for. So, you are right in saying that " Saying they are all clones of each other is like calling The Elder Scrolls a clone of The Legend of Zelda." but no one is saying that they are clones just that they are similar in a lot of aspects.

    • @pbsgameshow
      @pbsgameshow  10 років тому +1

      I'm with Rab on this one. Terraria/Starbound are certainly related, but a game like Rust or DayZ actually has more in common with what Minecraft *actually* is.

If you're tired of minecraft, you didn't beat the boss or finish all the levels; you're just tired of the game. Minecraft is infinite and has it's own sequels inside itself. As I was watching your video on Minecraft and you were going through describing what sets it apart point by point, it seemed to be a list of things Second Life does, and has been doing for over a decade. You gave Second Life a throwaway mention, my takeaway from which is to turn it back around on you and suggest that Minecraft is Second Life for kids.
    Simplified tools, simplified graphics, and developer-crafted video game hooks for people who want a little form in their sandbox, but the way you talk about Minecraft really does sound like little more than Second Life for kids-something Second Life couldn't quite nail down, even with their special "Teen" island.
    Not saying this is a bad thing, or suggesting Minecraft is inferior, just that it isn't exactly original/unique.

      Except the only problem with that theory is that Mojang is constantly updating and changing Minecraft almost every month. It's already at v1.7.4 - who knows what they'll have for Minecraft v2.0, not to mention in a span of a decade or two Minecraft could have ten times more craftable items, more tree types and biomes, and they'll be mineable ores for almost every solid on the periodic table. (It's unnecessary but I could see it happening.) Eventually more items in the game than World of Warcraft and Runescape combined.
      No other game could keep up with Minecraft, at this point, unless a company has more employees/developers and is willing to invest a whole lot more into a new imitation. All those other indie Minecraft imitations will fail, if not already, mostly for this exact reason.
      Of course, this is assuming Mojang doesn't stop. Lol

    • @RRapierre
      @RRapierre 10 років тому

      Even so, indie copycats will be out of business way before Minecraft shows any signs of retirement. And if another game after Minecraft becomes the "spiritual successor," it will still take several years (maybe less, because the future will have better technology, of course) for that game to reach the same caliber and have the same impact as Minecraft did during its heyday.
      Just like how many people today still play old games like Half Life, Doom, Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda, etc. Mojang may stop after 3-5 years or so, but Minecraft will still be popular and maybe be at the top of the genre for decades to come.

      In the PC version of Minecraft, the usable world generated has the theoretical potential of being slightly over 7 times the total surface area of our planet. The generated world in Minecraft extends in all directions for 30,000,000 blocks from the x=0 z=0 coordinates giving a total surface area of 3,600,000,000,000,000 blocks usable by the player.
      Blocks are still generated beyond the 30 million limit but they are blocks that cannot be interacted with by the player. This is known in the game as the "Far lands." A player who attempts to walk into the "Far Lands" falls right through the map and into the void. Also no to mention the game's lighting engine no longer functions beyond the 30 million block limit.
      For many even getting close to the "Far Lands" is impossible because just the journey there within the game expands the size of their save file to such enormous proportions that their computer just isn't able to render the game any more. Plus, I can't imagine anyone bothering to do so. I suppose you could teleport yourself there using commands, but where is the fun in that?

      David Bradley he says a few, there are PLENTY. the only reason no one outright rips off minecraft piece by piece, and then puts it together again in a sequel, is because the creative aspect to minecraft is already there. its blocky charm isn't really able to be replicated without seeming lazy at this point, and people wouldn't see a point to buying a game about creative expression when the first one already fills their need for it.
      All in all, there have been, and continue to be, plenty of minecraft inspired games, and him saying 1:19 doesn't stop his "idea" from being any less WRONG. honestly, the only thing minecraft did was kick sequels in the teeth by not directly having any. ***** you misunderstand me. the blocky graphics have their charm. not creativity as a basis for a game. And with the survival elements/multiplayer elements always being a hazard to your art, creativity IS a good concept for a game to be based off of, the game's success shows that very well. Also, I think imagination is the single most boundless thing in the world... its limitations are LITERALLY of your own making.
      Though you are right to some extent. when the charm is executed well, regardless of what that charm is, it is a sign for a successful/good game.

      Shadonyx Dev Re-logic has told/convinced/forced UA-cam to delete any and most videos that view on terraria poorly or badly critisize it for whatever reason. (Propoganda and information control), a prime example is when TBG's video on terraria was taken down. Now rest assured, TBG is not actually a critic or a professional reviewing channel, it's a satire, finding humor mostly in over simplifying things in a childish manner, and even I would say they've gone a bit far in their 'review' but once more, it's a satire video and was taken down. I attempted to look for other videos that I remember being taken down but trying to find a deleted video due to a company named 're-logic' is a google nightmare.
      I've heard a lot of rumors of people stating that they only made the game for money (which, isn't really a bad thing to be honest), but then they were/did drop terraria without any further patches. Still trying to find a reliable source on this. Basically, it's one of those companies that people like or hate a lot, and it made some douche moves that I've heard people complaining about. I personally don't play terraria myself but a lot of friends did, though I'm looking forward to starbound (which has one of terraria's developers involved as well?)

    • @chillinchum
      @chillinchum 9 років тому +4

      Dionisie Tarlev There's a discussion to be had about playing a game for it's achievements rather then for itself, but we will leave it be.
      Minecraft has in the past aimed towards being a dungeon crawler, but due to the simplistic combat, and the random nature of everything, it kinda falls flat in that category, and I don't disagree with people who say minecraft isn't a good game because of it. Getting platinum (or all of the achievements) is indeed only one way to play the game, and I feel it can be the blandest, in and of itself, it's no wonder you dislike it.
      Rather, what minecraft is good at, is allowing a person to take it's tools (sometimes literally), and build what they like with it, it's also easily moddable, to the point that you can just use command blocks to do all the coding yourself while in-game! (this might be a pc-version only thing though, I recommend getting that version instead of the console versions because of that and many other reasons.)
      Because it's so easy to change up the game experience, many people have recreated many game types, you can play thousands of games (no exaggeration) all within minecraft.
      Even in vanilla (unmodified) no frills survival minecraft, the biggest thing about it is the emergent unique experiences that can come about while playing, and how you react to them, knowing that no one scripted them in, they just emerged from the mechanics already there.
      Still, to be able to do all this and enjoy this game, you have to have a sense of creativity, and even with one, it has to be able to accept the limits set, if you don't get ideas in your head of what you could do with the game, it's very likely you will not enjoy it, and that's ok, heck, your not even creatively bankrupt as some might suggest!
      It just doesn't meld well for you, your creativity doesn't fit with what this game has to offer, again, that's fine, don't let anyone tell you you can't think creatively just because you don't like minecraft.
      I'm not trying to seel you on this game, if minecraft doesn't grip you within 15 minutes or most certainly at this point where you've done all the "goals" it has set for you, hours and hours later, it never will. Your friend is correct, you were trying to beat it rather then enjoy what journey it has, but you should have been able to enjoy that journey just like any other game by now, so if he bugs you about building, try it if you haven't given it a shot, if you have or once you do, and it's still not fun, don't worry about anyone's opinion, you defintely don't enjoy it, just remember that theres a lot more to minecraft then beating the ender dragon and getting all trophys/achievements, I can't stress that enough.
      And if your looking for a better randomly generated dungeon crawler where you make your own shelter, you might have better luck with Terraria, that game has much more elaborate dungeon design and tough monsters, it's hard to survive. I'm not sure it's on PS3 however.....and I'm not the one to ask about dungeon crawlers anyway, I hate those.

    • @chillinchum
      @chillinchum 9 років тому +1

      Dionisie Tarlev Technically it can be argued you haven't tried minecraft until you;ve tried the thousand different ways to play it, but I'll stand by my opinion that if you can't get into the "lego-ness" of it, where you can build a house, or a skyscraper, or a statue, or a submarine, or whatever your mind can think up of, you can never get behind those myriad other ways of playing, sense it's all built upon that same engine that pprimarilyfacilitates that creative designing.

    The reason that former genre-launching games spawned so many successful clones is that people liked what the first game offered, and they wanted more of it. First-person shooter fans wanted new levels, new guns, new enemies, etc. JRPG fans wanted new characters, new stories, etc. The thing is, when you're playing Minecraft and you want new worlds, you make them yourself, or download them from others in the community. If you want new stories, you imagine and live them out yourself. If you want new monsters or tools, you look for mods, or create mods yourself. Minecraft fans don't need *another* Minecraft, because there's always *more* Minecraft.
    The exception would be if you want a feature that Minecraft fundamentally lacks. For example, if you want to use blocks to create moving vehicles capable of interplanetary travel, check out Starmade. Or if you want higher-fidelity graphics, try Rust or ARK or Landmark. I wouldn't describe those as Minecraft clones; they offer different experiences, and perhaps narrower ones than what Minecraft offers. They do have a genre in common, and herein lies Minecraft's legacy as I see it. People now realize that building-focused sandbox games with procedurally generated worlds are possible, popular, and full of possibilities. These days we see more sandbox games than what we used to see. They just don't all look like Minecraft.

      No. It talks about this and discusses them in general. Not theorize them.

      Game Theory is mostly about specific facts, while this show is more philosophical.

    I don't usually play Minecraft, but it's really fun to play with friends. We would just go on for hours. I also don't know why I'm playing it, it has no goals yet so interesting.

    If you actually look at the genre of Open World Survival games you see the framework which Minecraft has come up with being recycled in various different ways. Although I have to admit that most of the games do not really qualify as Minecraft clones due to their lack of an easy-to-manipulate environment. These games might streamline your decision making into a certain direction, but the way most of the game instruct the player by actually barely instructing him at all is something I only have seen first appearing after the release of Minecraft. In that sense I would consider 7 Days to Die and possibly Don't Starve so far as the greatest heirs of Minecraft, with the first one actually qualifying as Minecraft clone.

    Its called EQ Next Landmark. EQNL is also voxel based that allows rounded edges and much better graphics.

    I built plenty of cities that weren't smoggy gridlocked metropolitans! They were smouldering piles of rubble that I built as a city originally and then got bored and started sending meteorites into the city.
