Fortnight. Among us, these are not good games. They're trash. They're popularity came from a bunch of desk jockey UA-camrs who had a bunch of braindead kids as a fan base. These kinds of games cannot gain traction like these because it tells the developers we don't care about standards. That we've lowered the bar. I hate these indie garbage games that infest the stores. Where are the games that had real feel to them? Where's the dedication to creation? The imagination?? When we were kids we couldn't imagine the kinds of games we'd have now. And all I see is super nentendo style games with slightly better graphics. 2nd party remakes, rip offs, for crying out loud they have hentai games on the switch store...I mean honestly who can disagree with me that elden ring and God of War where the only good things to come out to console gaming since gears and halo

You should and critque bad industry trends. you should complain about nonesense. about scam stuff like micro transactions. But it can't be understanted how fundemetial things like, "patches" did not even exist in the past. There is something to be said about rose tited glasses when so many games in the past were so horrifically awful.
If you are having trouble finding good games, you not looking hard enough. Despite what the games awards would have you to believe, God of War is not the pinnacle of gaming.
There is a lot wrong with the industry. One reason for cosntant quality of game changing, even between sequals, is because there is no unions for developers with there are with films industry. So creators are treated terrible and its common for people to be fired after one project. Not even successful creators are safe. The creative lead o the assassin creed franchise was fired wuthout notice on the second or third assassin creed game.
But were things better in the past? no. Growing pains and industry trains is not a excuse to pretend things were better in the past. pretending all the bad games of the past did not exist. lets not pretend that idustry before the success and rise of indie gaming was better.

One thing I noticed routinely in these much older games in contrast to newer releases is the level of creativity in world building and characters.
When I'm playing the Original Mass Effect trilogy I'm enthralled by the complexity of the world it is set in, the backstory, the characters motivations and lore. I actually want to read the codex within the game. Compare this to modern games where the world seems bland and cliched like in the Outer Worlds which is nowhere near the level New Vegas was on. I think a lot of games fail at the fundamentals nowadays in terms of storytelling and translating that into engaging gameplay.

It's the industry getting worse, that's why there are more and more good Indie games, because the Indie game devs still continue to have passion about gaming and not just about money or politics. Also there is a trend to put some subtle political message in some of the AAA titles, which makes the games very bland, because for that political message to be "heard" the story is completely destroyed. Also the games are more and more run like corporations, only for profit and when you do something only for profit all is already lost, if you don't have some actual fun of making the thing, it would not do well, your indifference would be felt. Also there is much more censorship these days, especially for the big titles. It goes so far, that for example in Mass Effect Andromeda, all the females are ugly, they've stopped making sexy girls in games to be closer to the real life... (to push the political message, that not all girls are perfect) but people who play games don't care about "the real world" they care about the story and the characters, and for example I don't like ugly characters (doesn't matter if male or female). There is more and more "woke" propaganda everywhere and it destroys, not only games, but also movies and TV series... that obsession of things to be "realistic", there was never such an obsession in the past, on the contrary, in the past we tried to crate in movies in games, what we didn't have in the "real world", not they don't want to give us even that. The political message is in general "you don't deserve nice things even in your mind". So that's the real reason why the games have become from bad to worse.
Of course for now Indie games are still made with passion and don't care about any political messages, the Indie developers still make their games the way they like and not to "send message" or make their games "realistic" or anything like that. That's why, Indie games are becoming better and better alternative for the AAA titles.

Back in the day we had fallout 3, fallout new vegas, oblivion, Skyrim, gears of war, halo, BioShock, mass effect, Minecraft, borderlands, left 4 dead, dead island, fable, dead rising, state of decay, devil may cry, resident evil, read dead redemption, GTA IV and V.
Every single one of these games and their sequels came out over the span of 10-13 years.
What do we have now that isn't a broken mess and good? Elden ring, god of war, RDR2... uhhh... idk what else.
It's been 9 years since gta V, 11 years since Skyrim. Its also been nearly 4 years since the elder scrolls 6 was announced. When is it coming out? Never?
It's been the same amount of time since the new fable got announced, where is it? I haven't heard a thing about it since then. I remember when I game was announced it was coming out just over a year or less.
Its like flipping a coin with a new game release, I don't even pre-order anymore.
Also shout out for the kenshi music near the end there. Kenshi is a good game too.
In conclusion, gaming isn't the same anymore, it's about politics, appeasing journalists and investors. Watering down creativity to create the most basic of games and squeezing money from it at every turn.
I may sound really negative but truth is, I care about gaming and always will. I just want it to be better. They had it in the bag just a decade ago. Why "fix" what ain't broke.

Newer games like Elden Ring blew me away, and I hope games can follow what Elden Ring did, don't rely on what sells, just make it fun and enjoyable. It's harder for games to feel special now because the market is bigger and we have more choices. Back in the day, (it could feel like) everyone was playing Goldeneye. Everyone was had Final Fantasy 7. Everyone played Metal Gear Solid. Everyone could talk about Half-Life. Everyone knew who Jim Raynor and Thrall were. We all had a main in Smash bros. Everyone had a crush on Laura Croft or the DoA girls, and the only survival horror game was Resident Evil 1.
Gaming was smaller, so it was easier for one amazing game to come along and break through the entire gaming space. It would be on the cover of EGM, there'd be a giant cardboard cutout of the Master Chief at Electronics Boutique (previously Funcoland). Today, there are soo many choices and it's much easier to silo yourself into a gaming "community", all online with no face to face interaction. LAN parties, launch events, holding a physical copy of that Sonic Adventure game I saved up for. Sitting next to the guy you were hooligan comboing. The Dire-dire-docks song. It was a golden age and we didn't even know it.

It used to be that games had to be finish before they shipped. Now games are about preorders and early access. Who gives a shit about finishing the game when we already have the money? Also the graphics dont need to be the greatest thing ever. Forget that and put that money into storytelling and gameplay.
Also I am a game soundtrack composer and I think that if more games allowed full orchestration for their soundtrack we could boost emotional connections like they did when games like Halo and World of Warcraft did back in the days.

Money makes the world go round, it sucks that it's affected gaming that much to where they don't care anymore. They don't see the benefits of putting smiles on lots of people's faces and entertaining millions of nights. They don't see the friends and interesting people you meet online anymore. It just sucks, hopefully an outcry of this will help a return to form. Or indie games start making bigger punches to make them more well known.
And I completely agree with music and game soundtracks. There's a reason why so many people in the world love music, people get attached to it and it pokes our emotions. Music in gaming is underrated and a lot of times people will remember games from their music and go through nostalgic memories. Soundtracks really help and add to a game. It's beautiful.

      Graphics are overrated.
Older games do meaingful options and consequences better. What's the point if players can't heve meaingful conversations and make the hard calls? Now it's reduced to blowing things up and brain dead shooting.
It's not that I'm bored. I never get bored. The problem is lack of MINEANGFUL consequnces. Do you want a game that MEANS something or excuses to go "pew pew" because of desperation for fun that dies off? Some of the best games are over 20 years old and STILL are loved because they give you more options. Your decisions. Your actions. Your choices. Your pain and suffering when you have to adapt to the harsh reality you are placed in. THAT is a game. That is meaning reason and purpose.
At least Shadow of War shows that a fair bit. Both with the game mechanics and the story.

Hence all the problems - fear to risk (no new ideas), lazy remasters (which worse than originals), squeezing fans to a penny, cut content for DLCs, battle passes, etc., etc. No real passion, no talent, no fun, no energy, no soul. Just content.

And only some games are centered on this now

  • @WhiplashSL
    @WhiplashSL Рік тому +4

I think another reason why newer games aren't as great as games in the past is primarily due to much of the industry going public and accepting shareholder money. They're basically at the whims of the shareholders, who have greater authority and power over how games are made than the developers and even the CEOs do. Think about some recent games that came out in the past: Mass Effect Andromeda; Anthem; Warcraft 3 Reforged; Cyberpunk 2077; Final Fantasy XIV 1.0; Battlefield 2042; Overwatch 2; and many others I'm likely glossing over. What do all of those games have in common? They were released way earlier than intended in order to meet a quarterly earnings report from the shareholders. Had the developers/CEO had an actual say in the matter, I bet they would have said "No, this game is not yet ready. We're going to push back the release date until the game is truly ready to be released."
Most of these shareholders are not gamers and probably don't understand how complex game development is. Their first thought and orders are to make a product as cheaply as possible, as quickly as possible to make the most money. Why have we been seeing more and more game studios push into the mobile gaming market? Why do we see more and more always online, live-service crap while seeing less and less offline, single-player games? Why do we see more games with microtransactions? Why do we keep seeing games launching in an unfinished, buggy, and unplayable state? Answer: The shareholders are to blame for all of these.

Like I was saying on another channel, here is what happened to me the other day: A few days ago, I picked up and played Final Fight, TMNT the ORIGINAL non-NES arcade game; I played Bad Dudes the Arcade game and Batman Returns on the Super NES and in those games, there was INSTANT non-stop arcade-styled action the moment I turn the game on and I was GLUED until I got to the end of each game. This is VERSUS games like today's Batman games where you have to learn what ALL of the buttons do, you have to solve a puzzle, solve a riddle, read through stuff, sit through long cutscene to know what to do next, do tutorials and do XYZ before even getting to see ANY action. And even with the BITS of action in the game, you still have to go FIND action even after completing XYZ.
So, my experience just a few days ago pretty much sums up games today vs. games during the 8 bit, 16 bit, arcade coin-op days. And such is what's wrong with games today. Games today HAVE become more boring. Plus, they don't come complete. They're constantly updating the damn games and we have to register to even play our system AND register AGAIN for some games....

I heard someone say that the popular a nerdy thing is, the less available it would be. I think you could say that to video games. They used to be such a niche thing, but now is big thing. Developers (specifically big ones) realize this, and just want money more than making a real game. So many people play video games now, and that made the business know that the more games they produce, the more money they make. They don’t have to care if the game is good or not, they just want a quick buck.

    • @rattyratrat899
      @rattyratrat899 Рік тому

I’m just going to add that yes, video games are becoming forgettable. Hype is gone now, left with broken promises. Free to Play games are my least favorite games in the modern era, period. So many people play them, and they have the mentality of micro transactions and bull crap currency. In Halo specifically, you could earn suits by playing the game. If you look at Halo Infinite you have to PAY MONEY to get the suit. It feels less rewarding and a total waste of your money. Video games used to be much nerdier, and I totally agree that nerdy gamers back then were much cooler than gamers today. Back then, no hot chick was going to play Halo 3 with you, that was for sure. It felt more accessible, and the people that made these games cared. They didn’t just want money, they wanted their fans to love their game. Valve’s multiplayer games stuck that mentality hard, with games like Team Fortress 2, and yes it’s a free to play game, and you do have to pay for items, but the game was Actually fun, which made the game fun to play even to the person who was not willing to pay any money for the game. One of the worst games to come out of this shit hole is Roblox. Roblox by itself is crap game, with broken physics and shitty controls. The only way that game has stayed relevant was the idea that you could make your own games, but games have done that much better, and Roblox is very forgettable. No joke, when I was a kid, I played Roblox a bunch, and I remember NOTHING from it. Games like Halo and TF2 made me have so much memories as a kid, remember Inc my first forge map, and flipping over my warthog and still shooting. I remember all of those things, but not with modern games. Again, I agree that some modern games are good, and indie games are truly at a high, but that’s my point. Triple AAA games are a joke, but they never were a joke. PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo all had fun experiences for me as a kid, and Nintendo is the ONLY company keeping that mentality alive.

    • @rattyratrat899
      @rattyratrat899 Рік тому

I know I’m talking too much, but I’ll just say that I missed when the only ONLY money you pay for is the game itself. In Halo 2, everyone you played had a copy of Halo 2, and nothing else. They may have unlocked some cool suit, but no new weapons to get, no nothing. They were scattered along the map, which made Halo feel fair. I hate Seasons and Battle Passes (I’m talking to you Fortnite), they felt less rewarding and just stupid. Those types of stuff back then was different, you had to EARN it, not pay 5 bucks to get that new skin, or grind literally anything. I miss good video games. Me and my friends still play Halo 2 using split screen, and we just have the time of our lives. Now when I play with friends on modern titles, it just feels like I’m just “better than them”, when really I should laughing my ass off how fun the game is.

For me in the past few years I have played a lot of amazing and memorable games that stick with me, like: Fobia St Dinfna Hotel, Stray, A Plague Tale Requiem, Elden Ring, South of the Circle, Madison, Metal Hellsinger, Paradise Lost, Judgement, Lost Judgement, Resident Evil Village, Metro Exodus, Returnal, Tell Me Why, Life is Strange True Colors, etc...
I am not the type of person that wants to only play a single great game for months, I prefer to have great single player games that have amazing stories, characters and art style.
I find that while I agree that if we look at only Shooters and Sports games or even older franchises, then yeah Gaming can seem different or bad now but I would say that people should branch out and explore the literal thousands of other games that get released each month that are amazing and memorable.

I agree. I remember my very first video game was Super Mario Sunshine and while some people saw it as a bad game I had a ton of fun playing it. As I grew older I could analyze properly and see some flaws in the game but in no way do those flaws make it a terrible game in my eyes because the platforming and hearing the music along with the tropical atmosphere was great.
There are some games now days (mainly free to play games) that have things like micro-transactions, loot-boxes, etc. which is a way for said developer/company to earn money and continue support for said game but some of those games main thing is just nothing but advertisement for cosmetics which is clear that it's part of the market. (I'm looking at you Fortnite.)
I also think some people forgot how to have fun when playing games and focus way too much on the bad stuff like drama, bugs, toxic communities, etc. And use that as an excuse to fuel the "why modern games are bad" idea. You see it a lot on UA-cam since that's what gets clicks. I once fell into the multiplayer game rabbit hole like apex legends or call of duty, playing it alone even having fun when playing them. And yet what enjoyment I had in those games eventually faded away because the people I played with/against in online were just outright toxic to me for unnecessary reasons to the point where I just felt angry playing them.
Eventually I recognized the origin of those emotions and focused on other single and multiplayer games like Resident Evil Village, the Need for Speed games and so on. There are so many games now days that are fun alone or with friends. That tell a moving story or just let you run wild. That let you switch your brain off or let you come up with strategy's. Video games are part of the creative media and of course part of the business market. With tons of tools to access such as Unity, anyone can create a game however they want it to be and anyone can see video games however they want.

Great video and valid point but I will say it’s like when people say radio music sucks now, but in all reality it was never that great to begin with. I love Halo and Gears to this day but those games are the equivalent of listening to Drake. There’s amazing art being made everyday but we just have to be willing to learn and find what’s out there old or new.

this is so true, it hurts. My work is gets less right now because of the season, and I have more time to play. but I don't have anything good to play in that time. the last few games I was looking forward to turned out to be either a broken mess, or prioritize ways to get more money than actualy finishing the game. besides that, there is simply...noting interesting out.
and I don't want to replay the same old games for the 10th time. they are great, but you can only play games so much before even they get stale.
btw for those wondering which games I am talking about, total war warhammer 3 and darktide

Dear god putting the Walking dead theme in the background made me tear up...never actually finished it myself. But i totally agree with everything you said in the video. After BO3 came out i stopped there..being a huge zombie fan and still am but i just stuck to the old games...I might sound cheesy, but for me personally, in regards to gaming, older times were better, had better memories playing between 2010-2017..still I am glad that happend...not sure about the future, espetially considering how people react to everything nowdays

I still remember playing singleplayer games such as prince of persia series, god of war, halo campaign, need for speed games and some others. I may not be that old, but i'll never forget those games, even though they didn't look amazing, but they felt like they should've, nowdays i've lost interest in games, always wait a few months after a new release to see if it's worth the time and money... It's simply not the gaming community that has changed, it's the way we're looked at. We're just those people who will waste massive amounts of money on games and not like a full blown community of like minded individuals who wanted to be a part of it. Such as halo. Hell, nearly every game felt special in some kind of way back then... I really miss those days when you couldn't wait to get on that game and do something inside of it... Really brings out the nostalgia and emotions associated with those memories and connections made along the way...

It's because every franchise that once was unique: gears, halo, cod, etc. Have all started chasing the trends of mobile games and fortnite and have become a lifeless watered-down amalgamation of the same formula: seasons, battle passes, limited time events, in-game currency, daily challenges, battle royales modes, emotes, live service free to play models, in-game store fronts, cosmetic bundles, etc. When you try to appeal to everyone you appeal to no one

However, i do have the feeling that we are on the verg of coming back to that golden age of gaming. There are so many series that are regaining their footing. Yes halo infinite has stumbled but i think its coming back. Gears i have a high hope that a remaster of 2 and 3 could be announced this year. Cod is feeling like cod again, just finished the mw2 story and it was good. Dead space remaster is on its way and silent hill is coming back just to use a few examples. Oh and of course mass effect coming back

One franchise that has certainly had a resurgence after some death was DOOM. It was bad from doom 3, took a 12 year break, then had an absolutely amazing fourth installment. Titan fall is also a newer series that is great, especially when titanfall 2 dropped, however titanfall died so that Apex Legends could live.

Imagine if the cosmetics in a game like COD MW were sold in the same way cosmetics are sold on steam for games like CS:GO. The marketplace formula works better and keeps games alive and profitable.

  • @andrewjackson7511

The change has more to do with the fact that nowadays most games are made to be a "live service", built on fear of missing out and monetization above gameplay. This also creates Flavour of the month games that gain a following quick but lose it just as quickly like Fall Guys and Among us. When games are "free" you or more specifically your time is what becomes monetized, what was it 327 years to get all cosmetics in Overwatch 2?
Furthermore, gaming has gone from a vilified sub-culture to a mainstream past-time. With this games are made to the lowest common denominator/normies.

As someone who skipped the PS4/Xbox one era and who has jumped back in with series x. I have been taken back. But by how complicated every game has been made. There's such a steep learning curve and so many menus and options to dive through..... That it makes you not want to invest the initial time in the game to become proficient in it. For someone looking for some quick fun..... It's quite a task. That's why simpler games and mobile games have become so popular. I don't want to read 500 books and learn 20,000 potions just so I can become proficient at playing The Witcher 3..... Meanwhile experiencing mediocre combat which is what I was interested in the game for in the first place. Then sinking 20 hours into the game and thinking..... Am I having fun?

2017-2018 are the years where the games have started getting more and more soulless as the bigger companies have been trying to copy fortnite's monetization system that blew up.
I think that the reason why the games don't seem fun is because we are looking only at the games we used to love like Call of Duty, Halo, Battlefield and etc. that have been taken over by the higher ups after they saw the success of epic games, causing developers lose their abilities to do what they truly want.
So while these big companies are trying to take advantage of their popular franchise, we have games that are not as popular as other franchises which makes them have more freedom to do what they want
Insomniac for example has a library of amazing games like:
    -Rachet & Clank Rift Apart
    -Marvel's Spider-Man
    -Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales
and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 seems that it's going the right path since they do seem to take their time
Rockstar while they remaster their games 50 thousand times they still release a good game when it's time to release an actual new game
Respawn entertaiment that is trying it's best to do a good game under the control of EA where they made Jedi Fallen Order that was actually good and upcoming Jedi Survivor that seems like a faster paced and more open game
Ubisoft that... okay we'll see if they have learned their mistakes and make Mirage good because they say that they will return to more classic AC games but we'll have to see
Their AC Origins was amazing but that was released 5 years ago so I guess I see why it was still good-
and with the growing up part... I don't know what to say about it
I have a brother that is 9 years older than me and to this day he enjoys games and doesn't feel burned out
He has a job and he plays about 2 hours daily max but he finds joy even in the most recent games
The games we both are waiting for are
    -Star Wars Jedi Survivor
    -Marvel's Spider-Man 2
    -Hogwarts Legacy
    -AC Mirage
    -Sons of the Forest
So there are still some great games out there. The problem is that these games are different from the franchises we used to love and we have to accept the fact that it will be rare for games like Call of Duty or Battlefield to shine again

The last time I really felt hyped for a game was Mortal Kombat 11. It paid homage to the classic stuff, the build up was insane with new character reveals on the regular. They brought back Shang Tsung from the movie. The classic music in the trailer... Then it launched and the gameplay was boring. The grind to unlock stuff was excessive, and the promised DLC took months longer to release than expected. I've not really bought a new game at launch since then, the only one I can think of is Stray, which was great. We need the creativity and focus on gameplay and story to make a comeback.
