- The Fire Department went out and did some anhydrous training. It’s amazing what you can do with water if done correctly. For anyone that is not familiar with anhydrous the huge white cloud that is coming out of the wagon shown in the videos could seriously injure someone or even could be fatal if they got caught in it.
That being said we would like for everyone to know that this is an extremely dangerous exercise to perform with out the proper training and should not be done without experienced personnel.
What you don’t see in the video is that two pumper units were used with one hose line ran from each of them in the event one of them failed. Both units were putting out maximum gallonage at maximum pressure. Both nozzles are set at almost full fan but are adjusted to capture as much of the discharge as possible. Once again if any Departments are going to try this make sure you have someone there with NH3 training and start with a small discharge until you are completely comfortable dealing with it.
Try it with a gas powered fan, keeping the scene dry by evaporating the anhydrous ammonia reduces the risk of chemical burns from aqueous ammonia with a high PH.
Thank you for showing this!
Great Vapor Dispersion technique
Same method used to attack a propane tank spewing flames
I wouldn’t get anywhere close to a propane tank spewing flames, it’s probably BLEVEing
That's awesome
Why didn't they went from cameraman's side.
You don't train the easiest, safest scenario. You train the hardest, most difficult. Why do rescue divers get dropped off miles out from the coast, left to swim back instead of just practicing in a pool all the time? Experience
Creating ammonia hydroxide
Lmao our fire department ran out of our plant when we had a fire and it started to leak a little ammonia
So water is what stops it?
It dilutes it. Anhydrous means it’s attracted to water and wants to bond with it, so the water grabs the gas and dilutes it but is still toxic because of being alkaline. Need to neutralize the water and you’re good.
Remember this is Ammonia in a vapor state. if that was liquid leaking like that, those guys would not be alive.
‘Water’ or diluted ‘acetic acid/water’
