Ferris is a fantasy character. An ideal. Making him more “real” would have made this another dated Breakfast Club-style self actualization fest. John Hughes came from the National Lampoon. He was a comic writer. A satirist. That was what he did best. He wrote Vacation after all.

    • @Demention94
      @Demention94 2 роки тому +4

Yes. His character is sort of the "larger than life" type. The narration he delivers throughout the movie allows for some abstraction. And it's pretty funny! Timeless in some sense of the word..

When Ferris breaks the fourth wall, it's mainly to talk about Cameron. He's genuinely concerned for him. Cameron is always on his mind. Yes, Ferris is somewhat self-absorbed in how he's having his fun but the whole reason he faked being sick to take the day off is to help Cameron. Ferris is ultimately more concerned with Cameron getting in trouble than himself, which is why he's insistent on taking responsibility for the car's destruction. He's still worried about what will happen to Cameron. Ferris maneuvering people and situations to maximize his fun is just him multitasking. :)

I understand every point you made here but personally, I'm very drawn to this movie mostly because I saw it for the first time right when I met who was once one of my best friends (I no longer speak to him now). He was very much like Ferris - cocky, eccentric, flirtatious, kind of nerdy but also one of the most popular kids in our class, and he got away with everything. I was much more like Cameron - a worrier, seemed to get in trouble for stupid reasons, and always felt like I was put at risk for his behavior. We argued a lot and it was a VERY toxic friendship but one love we seemed to share was the love for this movie - which is kinda ironic now that I think about it. I'm just glad that we're not friends anymore but I am glad I saw this film at that point in my life and ever since, I've really gravitated towards Cameron as a character and his arc always resonates with me to this day. I agree that Ferris is pretty unbearable but I also like it for that because for as glamorized as he feels, I have met people like him weirdly enough.

I feel like whether or not you think this movie is perfect like I do comes down to:
    1. Not minding all the contrasting elements and characters that can make it feel feel messy to others
    2. Finding the odd creative ways they portrayed Ferris and the world around him to be inherently interesting, and not awkward or grating

It's a messy movie, true, but I think it's meant to be. Teenage angst and teenage exploits are generally messy. What Hughes managed was a film that explores the naive and careless elements of being a teen, while tying them into the trappings of adulthood (dad at the ritzy restaurant, the obsessed principal, the oblivious mom). These puzzle pieces don't fit together neatly, at least not in America, where young men are often looked at askance, and young women are overly sexualized. Sloan always struck me as being truly in love with Ferris, which in a way neuters her sex appeal a bit in a film format because she's not really trying to be that way, she's just starstruck and happy that she can be herself around her boyfriend. And Cameron symbolizes the hard truth all young men face - at some point they must face their fears and whatever reckonings they may bring. Not a perfect film by any stretch, but it bears the marks of greatness in touching on great themes, not the least of which is that "staring into the abyss" moment in the art gallery, a subtle existential moment rarely attempted in a teen comedy.

I've been waiting for this review! This is one of my all time favorite movies. The critiques on Ferris character are spot on for sure, a lot of recent reviewers are now realizing how weird Ferris' is as character is in the movie. Though most of the the time to nostalgia of this movie takes over any of the glaring critiques (at least for me). When I watch it see it more as a like a teenage fantasy of having that one day where you can do "anything you want" without repercussions. I usually just watch for all the iconic scenes (Love the Museum scene) and the lines

I rewatched this film finally again tonight and saved watching your review until after. I haven't seen it for years but even though it is messy in areas and doesn't hang together as a satisfying whole (making you feel "torn" as you say) it does have lots going for it, including an undoubted charm. Every time I watch it, I wonder to myself why the British can never seem to pull off this kind of arch 'movie' with the same ease but that can be said of dance and musicals too, somewhat. The Charlie Sheen highlight scene cracked me up once more, his hair fluffed up in different ways each time the camera cuts back to him, giving us that knowing nod, bringing us back to contemplate ourselves for brief moments. It is certainly is a classic of it's time but short of a masterpiece. You encapsulate it very well indeed. Thanks as always

but It might be a biased projection on my part, because I have friends who look like how Molly Ringwald and Kristy Swanson did in that movie.
But in this one, Mia Sara is most definitely underrated, and I wish that she could've had a longer career: luckily, I also know someone who looks just like her, but though I've known her for a long time, we're not well acquainted.

I am with you that the film would have been so much better had it allowed the existential dread to breathe and sit with the characters, but I do think having Ferris be the one that's constantly forcing his friends to run from the dread they clearly should be dealing with works on paper and thematically, its just doesn't make for a movie that's my cup of tea.

Matthew Broderick was amazing, can't think of any actors from that time who would have been better. You do have a point the Sloan character is underdeveloped, but it's difficult to find a movie of that era (and genre) that fully explores the female perspective. I just think you "film schooled" the movie too critically. And I think it the casting was superb. Who else but Broderick could capture "cool nerd." Well... maybe Dustin Hoffman.

Ferris is one of the extremely rare, non-beta neutral face, nerdy Hollywood writer stand in characters in film. He's not an invisible, romantically hopeless, geek, loner who has to fight for the attention of some girl, or the popular kids ( see virtually every high school film ever made ). That alone, in it's rarity, sets up the fascinating trip we go on with him. "So, thaaat's what it's like to be the coolest, most loved guy in your school. So, thaaat's what being rich, attractive, and dating the hottest girl is school is like. So, thaaat's is the kind of stuff you can get up to when you have no real problems, or challenges holding you back." Having this character exist in his amazingly privileged reality without turning into an evil, arrogant, entitled, bully nightmare of a human being ( ala Sebastien from "Cruel Intentions" or Chuck from "Gossip Girl" ) is another one of it's unique accomplishments.

There's a documentary on it(here on youtube) called "Inside Story" by bio com where it explains the original tone of the movie was more cynical and Ferris was more like Judd Nelson from "The Breakfast Club" who smoked and drank all the time. And Sloan had a kind of sardonic wit that flew over the heads of the female audience they cut out. Like talking to Cameron she says, at least for women, we can cop out and just let a man support us. You don't even have that option.
It was meant as an ironic jab at gender roles, but female audiences thought she was serious, and graded it bad at previews.
Also, Hughes was constantly re-writing a film which has no 3 act structure and actors didn't know what they're lines would be often that day. So I think some credit should be given for the unconventional structure and improvisational creativity

When i saw it as a kid, this whole film was just a load of fun and i didnt care much about the undertones.
When i saw it as an adult i was surprised of how much of an psychopath Ferris seems to be.
And i still wonder if this ideal of his character just didnt age well, or if this is intended and what he represents.
And this really is Cameron's coming off age story, in which he does not only grows out of his father's controlling shadow, but also learns to be himself as someone who takes responsebility and not gives his destiny in the hands of his irresponsible friend.
Maybe this is what Ferris represents. Staying dependend on others to not have the responsibility of making his own decisions, which actually is more prevelent in his relationship with Ferris, than with his Dad.

Ferris is just a rich kid from a good family that has never faced any challenges, I think most of us are Cameron in real life and we wish we could've been Ferris especially in high school. It would've been interesting to see a 20 something year old Ferris because Broderick said that Hughes was thinking about it at one point.

I like how weird the mixed match tones are. Lots of films struggle with trying to juggle what it wants to be but I thought in this films case it was charming how awkward the comedy can be. I liked Ferris as character until I met my first narcissistic sociopath and I can now kinda see how Ferris shares some of that kind of manipulative behavior with that person. Have you ever talked about “Risky Business” on this channel? I thought that was going to be like a John Hughes film but was surprised by what it actually was.

I never really gave the movie much thought other than the fact that it was just one of my favorite movies at the time. It might be because the entire movie was so removed from my reality that it was an extremely humorous fantasy for me. I had many such adventures, but not on that scale and not with fun results. Like before that movie came out I did walk by two older (not much) females laying out and I went and got a spray bottle of cold water and walked back. I sprayed them down and they yelled at me only briefly and then I said that now that they have some goose bumps a light coat of oil will be more even on their skin (total BS but I was a teenager). Just as I reach down to grab the suntan oil, one of their brothers came outside and dam* near brought tears to my eyes (slightly later did from the pain) and gut-punched me and hit me in the jaw. The next year that movie came out and when he ran past the two sunbathers in the yard and did a double-take, I had to wonder why I couldn't at least have had his more pleasant outcome. I never danced and sang Twist and Shout on a parade float though.

Cool facts Emilio Estevez turned down the offer to play Cameron and Molly Ringwald was offered to play Sloan and said no. I feel like Paul Gleason RIP was considered for principal Mr. Rooney and even if he wasn't I can still see him in the role and he basically would've been playing the same character from the Breakfast Club only with a different name.

  • @eliciashawn9150

Your criticism of FBDO is entirely the reason that I will always love this film. I remember being a kid and always relating to Cameron. As a teen I related to Genie and as an adult I found myself in Sloan. I think Ferris is not meant to be an actual person. He is the ego of all of these characters. They use him to give their lives more meaning. To make him more empathetic, would change the film entirely, not in a good way. FBDO, in my opinion is Mr. Hugh’s best film, as it is his most existential. The Breakfast Club is hailed as the cult favorite for this exact reason because it goes deep into why. In the end, one can surmise nothing changes. However, with FBDO, the characters do change with exception of Ferris. Instead of looking at why the ego is there, let’s explore it.

Bullshit about Ferris "not having an arc." Throughout the film Ferris trivializes Cameron's personal problems until the very end when the car crashes when he realizes that shit is "real." He makes a wholehearted attempt to wait with Cameron until his dad gets home so that he can "take the heat" for him, and that moment always felt genuine to me. So, no.

I think you’re wrong about Jeannie though ofc I get it. She doesn’t have the “right” to be bitter when that bitterness only hurts herself. Everyone liking him doesn’t mean she can’t be liked or do her own thing. the unhealthy focusing on Ferris by her and Rooney United not villain characters but the wrong way to view him and perhaps the age, according to the film. I don’t see Ferris as a human, so the flaws are more ones of concept than character.

Ferris is supposed to be the suave magnetic guy we all wish we could be, but he’s always come off like a twerp who is undeserving of the inexplicable universal praise of his peers, glad to hear others are on the same page. Maggie if you see my comment, I would say that MOST of Hughes works are mostly geer towards a "direct" audience. His works are more about reaching people that need a strong message but in a very direct way. I can tell from the way you reviewed this movie that you're completely mismatched with it based off your words alone and how you approach reviewing overall. This movie will always resonate with people because society is constantly placing us in boxes.

Completely disagree. You are supposed to infer that everyone loves Ferris for a reason. I suspect his parents treat him better because he saved their marriage. The story is about the select few who don't love Ferris, and Cameron, who is Ferris's 'project.' But these nuances are lost on people who were dorks in high school. Stay in your lane and review deep artsy nonsense films.
