Welcome back! This week we install the rack for solar panels and clean & seal the skoolie roof. We used a Superstrut-Unistrut rack that is fixed to the ribs of the bus. We'll attach the solar panels to this rack next week. In the meantime, we clean and seal the roof with Henry's Tropical. This lessens the transfer of heat through the roof of the bus while sealing the surface as well. We got a lot of help from Craig from Ramblin' Home (IG: ramblinhome ) and Abe from @ThatMillerLife .
Next week we'll install the wiring, the MPPT solar charge controller, and the panels themselves!

Looks great! I am hoping to get my roof painted this week when the rain stops here in FL. I decided to use Henry's Dura Bright instead of Tropicool so we will see how it goes.

After watching your ordeal, I starting thinking about the wash-down in particular. I have a car/boat wash coming off the island here in S Texas that I will take my bus, to wash the top down and get a shop broom to wash from the top, and using an extension ladder, all before the frame goes up on top. I will roll/paint on at least two coats of Henry's 100% silicon, which I have already purchased.
I might use TSP, tri-sodium phosphate, very good cleaner, but it stings to get it on skin. Tough job Cody.
The metal track looks good the way you put it up, and then I will go around all the bolts with the Henry's 100% silicon.
You are doing a great job, but it's not easy and especially for one person.
Keep it up one foot in front of the other. I am very interested in your job and success. You can do it!

This is awesomeness. I’m planning on doing the same model that you guys did for my skoolie! Thank you so much for the idea and sharing it. Have you guys had any issues with it holding up at high speeds or windy days?

Great idea using the unistrut to attach the solar panels to the roof. How did you attach the unistrut to the roof of the bus? Like you, I want to keep the original metal ceiling inside the bus. Did you use anchors and if so what kind did you use or did you drill all the way through the roof and ceiling? Any info will be greatly appeciated.
I'm so sorry, I thought I replied! We used metal screws to fix the unistrut to the ribs of the bus. A couple spots have screws just into the sheet metal, but a majority go into the actual ribs. The ribs are the strongest part of the bus frame. Have not had any issues to this point. The panels are attached to the second tier of unistrut with nuts, washers, and bolts.
