Looks like something I would to too lol. Only thing holding me back from doing the exact same thing is some new brushes and a new set of bearings. Great video as always, Eric!
Nice video! I live about a block away from a Model 5 in a stainless housing in Lincoln City, Oregon that is used for tsunami warnings. It is tested on wednesdays at 11 a.m.. I got a video of it during the Japanese earthquake in March running a 2 or 3 minute alert cycle, and also a video of a test from about 80 feet away, but the camera didn't do it any justice! I will probably upload them soon.
@Thunderbolt1000T I think the single phase 5 motors use repulsion-induction motors that have brushes and a commutator. The Model 2's is similar but it's series wound so it can be run on AC or DC. Correct me if I am wrong, anybody.
@vanamonde2 I get that a bit with the T-Bolt, never had the guts to stand a ways away from the horn where it's loud, but underneath, it definitely has some interesting qualities especially since I sealed the blower plenum! Are you using both muffs and earplugs?
@dillonrockband It's a repulsion motor. In this type of motor the brushes short the windings in the armature. It's very different than a model 2. There is no connection to the armature at all to the rest of the motor.
@Nelso90 It's really weird feeling actually. Kind of like your whole body is buzzing. I can imagine that if it went on long enough you would probably start to feel sick from it. The hearing protectors I have cut the sound down by I guess at least 90 percent. They are awesome.
@hootergirlsrhot Yep, synchronous speed is 3600 RPM for a 2 pole motor I think, but with inherent slippage in a load condition like that it is about 3450.
What's as little as half horse power? This motor? Are you kidding? I think it's closer to 7.5 hp. I ran it on 240 volts and it pulled about 30 to 40 amps on startup.
Always loved how the 12 port single tone Federals sounded. That had to be one hell of an experience being that close!
Imagine using it as a siren on a fire engine LOL

she sounds amazing
Single Phase Model 5. Can tell by the motor design.
Nice siren.

Dang now that I watch your videos again you remind me a lot of my algebra teacher. Nice vid.
I'd love to try that in the sound booth of my recording studio. The loudest siren I've had in there so far is a Model L.
Sounds healthy!
Where can i get one of those?
I also rescued adalena with that siren made by 1950s

@TBOLT1000 No. Don't need a housing until it goes back up on a pole.
where do you get all of these? i need to get myself one!
the model 5 siren chopper is as the 2001 chopper i did not know that
No, the chopper of the Model 3 is the same as the 2001's.
The only thing that's the same is the 12 ports

Nice! do you have the housings for them?

@mohkfry I've never bought a siren on ebay. All of my siren stuff has come from surplus and old sirens from cities.
Awesome. How do you get your sirens? do you find them on Ebay or do you get them from the city?
Could be as little as half a horse power. What voltage are you using and how much current does it draw?
@vanamonde2 I wish. No, but he talks and sounds like you and he's a really big dude.
@Nelso90 No. I'm only using the protectors. Don't need earplugs with these things.
@dillonrockband Your algebra teacher runs sirens?
It look more than a ww2 vertical siren
is the rpm for that 3450? like most other federal sirens
How many horsepower is the motor?
@gameexpert385 Since it's called a Model 5 I would guess 5 hp.
Whats the diameter of the chopper? 15 inches, That's what I heard
12 port
@@Levi99130 lol
@MrSpartan083 I don't know. They never hear my sirens.
@hootergirlsrhot I have no idea.
That couldn't have been comfortable!
That’s loud in the garage
Do you have 3 phase?
No. That Model 5 i had was a single phase siren
@@vanamonde2 ah I was just wondering because it's pretty high pitched for single phase
That's the first time it was run up to speed. It was assembled out of unused parts, motor, stator and rotor were spares that had never been used.
@hootergirlsrhot It's 18 inches in dia.
@Thunderbolt1000T See reply to dillonrockband
@murrfarms I've got brushes if you need them. Send me an email at my site address.
