Years ago musicians protected their knowledge from theft.
Therefore, I thank you for being so sharingly.
That was very sweet bro! Your right amen!
They are delusional, everything you learn in music is taken, nothing is truly yours and nothing will ever be
The best musicians often have a similar mantra: to keep it, you have to give it away
Love this! Thanks for the inspiration, I really appreciate the sound of mixing major with minor and vice versa.
Your lessons are great. They are always are full of great tips and useful techniques. Thanks!
Really cool vid! As always....
Opens my eyes with easy explaining of these great harmonic ideas.
So nice how you help me understand sound and playing. Thanks Jeff!
Jeff, these videos are great at helping me break out from some lazy habits. Thanks for all the ideas which are really well put together and to the point. Keep them coming!
Jeff, thanks for posting !!
Great lesson! Always looking for fresh ways to express ideas
So many great tutorials.. really respect the time you take to share da knowledge!! Good work 😌👍✨
Thank-you Jeff! It is always valuable to learn new applications for what you already know! Sweet...
Really cool explanation for a really beautiful idea. I noticed when I explained this to other people it helps to discuss how the structure of a minor pentatonic scale is structured and it's relationship to its relative major pentatonic scale.
For instance when talking about using the a minor pentatonic over a B flat major 7 chord, it's important to note that the minor pentatonic is built with a minor third as the first two notes followed by two hole steps and another minor third.
This seems to help make the logical leap from the seventh of a major 7 chord to the notes that can be built off of it.
I have been waiting for this thankyou
your whole videos are just so extremely useful... What I’ve been so curious and thirsty.. thank you so much
this is so useful! A lot of potential in there! Thanks Jeff!
Love it...all your stuff is amazing
THIS explains a whooooooole lotta tonality that I've heard over the years and haven't been quite sure why it sounded this way. Brilliant. That's the best thing about being an ignorant musician like myself, but with enough knowledge to fathom my ignorance; there are still so many simple, illuminating things to learn!!!
Jeff, thanks for the great lesson!!
Jeff thanks for your awesome video!
Awesome Jeff!

It's very much worth mentioning that a major pentatonic on the 5th of the maj7 chord (or minor pentatonic off of the 3rd) is a really practical application, also. It gives you the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th of the scale. Basically everything but the root and 4th which allows it to work rather effortlessly on a maj7.
I love your videos, Jeff!
+Geoff Stockton indeed! Thanks for that addition
Totally appreciate you! Thank you!!
Wes Montgomery was a big user of these techniques
Great lesson man!
Muchas gracias maestro!! Saludos pentatónicos desde España!!
great video!
Ohh good stuff for all instruments!!
Great Tip!! Excelent video thanks so much!!
Really useful stuff! I'm a guitar player who has been stuck in an improvisational rut recently and I'm eager to try this!
Thanks Jeff
That sounds great 🥰👍
Thanks for the lesson teacher!
If you're in Lydian (IV) of the major scale, this fits perfectly. Ex: in C major. IV (F) is a major 7 (F A C E, 1 3 5 7 ), so then it's E minor pentatonic (E G A B D, 7 9 3 #11 13). Not a single note outside of C major. To be honest though, bending rules are more fun. Also, this idea is amazing, thank you for teaching me this. I'm love the way you explain everything, and it's definitely helping me.
Best music lessons on youtube
the minor pentatonic from the 7th sounds amazing :)
Great video as always! I think another help tutorial would be for different pentatonics over minor chords
please yes!
This is great but for those who don't like the sound of the sharp eleventh. you may also try the minor pentatonic over the third of the chord, this way you get the major 7th, the 9 and the 13th without any 11
Hence, maybe a tad easier, the major pentatonic over the 5th degree
Yeah, that's right, in fact, this is the right choice for ionian maj7 chords, because the one Jeff is showing us on the video if for lydian maj7 chords. Sounds good either way but not so good for a tonic chord. The minor pentatonic over the seventh degree is good for a subdominant chord. But it could work for a dominant one as well, given that the dominant chord supports all tensions available, then the sharp eleventh and maj7 are available to a dominant chord if you wish.
the lydian is considered the "perfect" scale to use over a major 7, because the natural 4 is considered an avoid note, though rules can be broken but i personally LOVE the sharp 11, optimum brightness!
Yeah I agree, Its the best sound for a major 7. It wont work in all the songs though. because the natural 11 is the one to be used over a sus4 chord. That's why is good to know both alternatives. Any way the pentatonic over the fifth of the chord does not contain any avoid note. It's not so bright that's true.
I litterly FEEL sharp 11 like with a major 7 is the best musical sound ive heard so far... what even?
Real kewl!
DUDE! Finally it is all starting to make sense. Jazz may be 'dead' (yeah right!) but the legend Jeff Schneider lives on.
Here's another cool pentatonic idea. I learned this from a Bob Reynolds video but here's what you do. Let's say you're on a G7 and you an altered sound (or let's say you're straight up on G7 alt.) What you do is go up a minor 3rd and play the minor pentatonic based off that note. So over a G7 you would play Bb (#9) Db (#11) Eb (b13) F (b7) and Ab (b9). Easy way to get that altered sound without having to memorize all the altered scales.
nice video, thanks.
I'm not sure if you mentioned it in the video, but I think it's important to mention that this is one alternative to the standard pentatonic scale usage in the context of a major 7 chord, and that there are other options out there too depending on the chord & what kinda sound/ feel you're trying to achieve (the wider point being that you don't have to let "Bb pentatonic scale" dictate you that it must be played over a Bb major chord). I agree that the example you gave is pretty much the only alternative for maj7 without straying far from the chord tones, but for e.g. over straight up Bbmaj you could also use Ab and Eb pentatonic scales for a more sussy sound
#11 is a great sound. Interesting tidbit, if you are a brass player, you may already know that the #11 appears in the harmonic series before the natural 11. So the lydian scale is more at home (no avoid notes) over major and major seventh chords than the major scale (the natural 4th/11th is the avoid note in the major scale)
ur awsome tnk!
damn you are right. this is REALLY good for guitar. especially when you're bored of traditional straightforward approach to pentatonics and sticking to plain chordtones.
Can you please do a video on chord extensions for saxophone
So basically play C major pentatonic and B minor pentatonic over Cmaj7
Btw, cool sax sounds
ps: it's C lydian scale without I and V degree so now I get why it sounds good over major 7 chord
Tu summarize you can use the major penta from the II chord (V works too)
Thanks for the lesson! Question - would this be more appropriate if the function of the Bbmaj chord was chord IV? Would you use the #11 or Am penta scale approach even if the Bb chord was the tonic?
Am Penta scale over the F major key wouldn't offer much extra flavour as A C D E G are already in F.
oh yeah
I always think about stacking the pentatonics down in fourths- e.g. over a Cmaj7 chord, you can play C pentatonic, or a G pentatonic for some extensions, or a D pentatonic (which is what you say in this vid) for even more. Using this, you can kinda move 'in' and 'out' logically, and I feel it opens up more options.
maj or mn on each?
Alexander Olsen It works with either, if you just play the same scale each time.
"play the same scale each time"? Not sure I follow entirely. So over a Cmaj7 you could choose to dip into a G minor pentatonic...as long as you use Gmn pent idea again instead of switching to a Gmaj pent, it will still sound coherent?
Alexander Olsen Nono, haha, my bad for being unclear. You still have to use the pentatonic to use for the chord, what I meant is that the movement in fourths works for both major or minor, as long as you 'start' with the one that fits over the chord at hand.
Ahhh gotcha yes! So sort of a circle cycle (4ths or 5ths depending on ascend/descend)...a la Bill Evans "Waltz for Debby" but stretching that idea across a single chord to get some of the extensions and a few "out" notes. Definitely used this before, one of the few things the older jazz players stop you and ask "ummm what was that...and show me how you did it." I picked it up from an old New Orleans pianist on a video somewhere here...I think it was professor longhair. Will have to see if I can dig it up.
nice
Oh I like this trick.... I thought you were going to say take the pentatonic of the 3rd something which I do naturally I don't play jazz anymore but I think this would sound beautiful in an ambient track
That would be very ideal if you're playing in Bb Lydian as that #11 would work as your raised 4rth.. It sounds like an Eddie Hubbard tune..
For pattern playing you are better off thinking A-pent with G- pent. Easier to get resolutions, plus it is also related to all the triad pair (hexatonic) ideas.
Yep... a great and simple way to create licks...
Great starting point for helping guitarists to break out of 'pentatonic jail' 😄
could you think of this like using a lydian scale?
I hope my Jazz is Dead shirt comes before I see Dead and CO. next week
I missed the jazz is dead sale 😩😩Can we get another one? Pretty please 🙏🙏
Guitar in lap, LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!
More sax video’s in the future Jeff? 😎

You want to say Zappa.
Inversely, does major 2 pentatonic work over minor 1?
Hey, how often and how long per session? And on what? Tone exercises? I'm trying to get that good.
Guitarist Robben Ford uses this concept in his playing. 👍🏻
Ok....so then does it work in reverse? Use a Major Pentatonic a half step up for a minor chord?
So for a-, use a Bb Major Petna Scale?
eye see you. grateful;
Does this work on dominant and other 7th chords?
It's a Maj7/9 chord, thats right?
Jeff, with both pentatonic scales being just a half step away, would this be a form of "sideslipping"?? What would be great info is to get comfortable moving from one to the other over the same chordal rhythm (connecting the two)...any thoughts on this? Thx man, love your stuff!
Thnks bb
Hi Jeff, i tryed it over aebersolds backingtrack volume 24 major&minor disc 1 Nr. 1: concert Bb ; means for my tenor concert c so i took the B minor pentatonik as you said. But i guess it didnt realy work. Whats wrong?
What chords were those at the beginning?
Don't the notes of Bb pentatonic and Am pentatonic equal the notes of F major? I found it easier to just remember the notes of F rather than thinking of switching between 2 different scales.
Jazz is Dead was a great fkn band :)
Minor Pentatonic off of the #9 for altered tones (dominant)
Josue Tzunun ..or major pentatonic off of the tritone ...(same thing), is how I think of it.
Julian Lambert That works too 👌
Can I still get a Jazz is dead shirt
Pls explain the circle of fith
soccerlive0 So many videos for that. If he doesn't have one (I think he does), watch anyone explain it and you'll be fine.
I am a bit new to improvisation and i have a question. Lets say i'm playing on a a few chords. Wouldn't it get a bit boring only playing 3-4 notes for a bar or two? I know you can add notes but i"m not sure which ones you can add to make it sound good. Is there a video that explains this or can someone explain it to me? please, 'so confused.
uagfihsbfawet You should of course explore using more than just those notes, but unless your solo is long, you can do a lot with just a few notes. Three or four notes can be combined in different orders, with different rhythms, spacing, note lengths, etc.
Don't forget that rests are also valid notes in an improvisation -- not every second needs (or should) be filled with playing.
Hey Jeff! I love your channel man, I am also a fellow saxophonist. Just curious, what video editing software do you use? Like for split screens and also for recording your computer screen. Trying to get a few opinions. Thanks!
+Kevin Bene mostly using sxreenflow these days
Jeff Schneider great! Thanks so much for the reply.
How can I tell what Pentatonic scales fit over what chord and if I can keep it or not throughout the chord progression
Do you want a simple rule or do you want the truth?
Both?
no shirt for me😥
In an A tonality - major or minor - try an Am pentatonic scale but instead of playing A, C, D, E, G play G#, C, D, E, G.
Does the same formula apply to playing over a minor7 chord? (i.e. playing a maj pent starting on the 7th of the minor 7 chord?)
Nick J Jones - I guess it would. The scale degrees you would get are the 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 13th (as in relation to the original minor). It's not going to sound as interesting as the one Jeff talks about, but it definitely works.
AlexWhiteLanda .
Dude, in the absence of any other harmonic information, you’re basically implying a Lydian tonality, right? The #11 isn’t jarring against a natural 11 (or 4th) because the ear hasn’t heard one. This would sound quite different if you had preceded the Bbmaj7 with its ii (Cm) or ii V, because then we’d have heard the Eb. So really, I think you’re saying [over a IV (maj7) chord (the Lydian chord) the minor pentatonic built on the maj7 is a good choice]. The other 2 diatonic pentatonic scales don’t include the #11 so aren’t as Lydian sounding.
where's your francois louis lig m8
On an almost completely unrelated topic, anyone here know of a closely-studied and well written analysis of Eric Dolphy's improvisations, which includes their relation (if any!) to the underlying chord progressions ?

Why would I want to buy a 'Jazz is Dead' t-shirt? JAZZ IS DEAD; LONG LIVE JAZZ!
I think this is more intermediate Pentaonics. harmonic planing is what I think of as an advanced application. hint hint
all that just for trying to sell t-shirt?
suggest: jazz = DAD
Guitar players know this as Bm Pent over C major
Ah senin dilini anlayabilsem keşke
Türkiyede jazz müzik çok famous mu?
can you translate that what you speak into German? It would be so nice!!!!please! than I understand more😂😅🤗
Why should I buy a Tshirt that attacks Jazz? Jazz is alive as fuck.
nyhyl Sarcasm.
The sarcasm isn't obvious at all, in most cases it certainly will be understood literally...
You may not know it but there was a time when jazz was really almost dead or moribund. It prompted the great late Frank Zappa to say one of his most famous quotes: _"Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny"_
It's irony, dude... tongue-in-cheek humor
Why is Jazz dead again???
