This track looks absolutely insane and I cannot wait to see a Shay get the love it deserves! As for a name, South Pacific Isles Cargo Express (S.P.I.C.E) or some variation, in celebration of the completion of this incredily spicy track!
For my save, I made a set of 3% bridges following the shore into the mountains from the Sawmill to the Iron mine. It was fairly straight, just (sorta) follow the contour of the hillside as you descend and you should end up at the lake, behind the sawmill. I connected it to where I pick up the lumber and beams to make it easier (Betsy can do it with ~2 T2 lumber cars). From there, I was able side wind up to the smelter, again with a 3% grade. I also made a track (3%-4% grade) down the west side of the smelter that circles around behind the logging camp (to make cord wood less annoying).
I wish they'd swap the cord wood and iron platforms at the smelter. Unloading cord wood three cars at the time was okay for a bit, but it got old quickly. Ideally the coal mine should be usable before the smelter (so give it other resources as supplies) and then we'd fire up the smelter with coal.
I would recommend building the tracks to the sawmill from the iron mine, it's shorter and you can do it with a 2.5% if you build on the lake, the lake as far as I know is only 0.5 - 1 metres deep everywhere so you are fine
Glad you're keep up with RRO was sad when you and Hyce stopped posting together. Was thinking it might be worth it to build a small shunt yard off that 6% before getting to the smelter. Then you could build and break up trains there and not have to worry about fouling the one out bound side of the smelter and the helpers can unhook there so the slow shays dont have to go all the way around the loop and swith back to normal engones.
I finally got my coal mine connected and a few runs up to the refinery, got it all set up for the next day. Lost my save 🙃, atleast I can still watch Kan!
Jeez kan, you always surprisd me with how you make these tracks, i ended up moving the iron minne next to tge coal mine and make a track from there to the smelter, i just could not figure out a smooth way to that iron mine
I love the lake valley map. some of the industries you will need to circle the lake for a low % grade. The map I'm currently playing on they went straight across the lake with a causeway.
In reality, I think somewhere like the iron mine would be more likely to use chain powered carts or conveyors to lift the ore to a more suitable spot for trains. I've seen that in standard-gauge but I've no clue about narrow-gauge. I could be completely wrong! :p
I was just watching your latest Derail Valley episode alongside Hyce's POV (got slightly distracted trying to synch the audio), I got inspired for an acronym for the name for your company on this video, which I'm now rewatching. I don't know what it'll stand for, company-wise, but DNF has a nice ring to it.
I cheese the smelter by bringing in a slightly raised track on the inside of the coal dock, skimming over that coal pile, and then bring it right along the front of the cordwood dock. Toss your cordwood in front, coal in back, pull in and unload all at once.
A couple of things I'd do if it were my RR- One, I'd still put the switches in for the cordwood. Especially if you do plan to release the map to the public at some point. Leave the lines a little long, at worst you can store extra cordwood there and transfer loads from the extras to empties to the transfer cars. Second, I'd set up that other loop further back. The one that fouls the iron loading. Either that, or stage the hopper cars on that track and leave it up to whatever engine is working the yard to classify them. It would essentially just be another yard job at that point for whoever is working there. Definitely want to have a turntable at the smelter, along with all the other necessities. As much work as it'll see, it will definitely become a hub.
I got my track there completly diffrent. I went from sawmill to iron mine like constant 3% then single line for smelter from there only for iron loads to unload. Cordwood and output goes on 2nd track also 3% to freight depot. Nice to see diffrent solution
I think it should be Lakeside Railway Authorities. While it isn’t much of an abbreviation (L.R.A.), it is a good name that reflects the area. Love the video.
I don't know if its in your plan or what you want to do with the iron line but adding a siding that has a significant hump at the very top of the climb from the iron mine would mean you could shove iron hoppers up a hill with the climbing engines and have them roll to the smelter. Possibly with more hopper cars staged so you could just take a set of empties down to fill and not have to deal with shunting at the actual iron mine
Kanosha Anton & Nerville Railroad Or : K.A.N. RR Also if the upper turnback loop is too tight(30m radius) one can just go on the long loops and shove back trough the 50m
Name idea: Pacific Orient Operation PLC - P.O.O.P . Also, do you plan on building another Hump yard like you did with Hyce? I was surprised on how effective the first one you made was in this game.
put loaded ore cars on the 10%, ride them and just use the car brakes like a gravity yard then popback to the top w a telegraph building and repeat. leave a switching permanently at the ore yard.
You should embrace the jank and have the turntable ON the main line with a few spurs coming off it for storage. Can you bank the curves? Would make some of those nutty 10% curves more survivable, lmao.
RollerCoasters Online! As for the smelter, move the tight 30 loop further away so it links to the outside of the shunt yard, this way the outside is the main and the inside is for loading. Doing it as such will let trains pass while one is loading the iron. Might have to shift the entire shunt yard a bit, but there's plenty of room on the "iron mine" end of it.
You can reduce that 10% grade by corkscrewing the track down to the plateau, laying a short section of 0%, then corkscrew again to the iron mine. It's more track but you might be able to get 1 cart up with Betsy..?
I KAN I have another great idea put a gear train train to take care of the iron mine, so that train carries cars down and up and it doesn’t go past the smelter, but it could be used to help trains that stall out on the grade
I like your vids on rr online i did a search and found a way to get down to the iron with a 4% grade it took me awhile i like the way it turn out i havent connect to the smelter yet but i am up to the plateu
The Heights on the first map you have a engine to help your trains up the iron mine track on the last map, so put a shade to help so just put a shade in the middle of the track on the grade to help trains if they stall out
I think the Iron Mine line can come up from the side of the lake? make a long causeway in the lake and connect that to just short of the beginning of the climb?
Hi kan I rlly love ur vids and just wanna say thank you for being so entertaining.. also I’m hoping I could do me a favour: if you could ask the devs to see if they could eventually add the double fairlie tandem train built in 1869
