The only thing wrong with this song is that it is not long enough. The great harmonies, the awesome walking bass line, great hammond organ and of the just terrific jazz guitar riffs by Larry Carlton. The last song on the legendary Nightfly album. I never heard them do it live, except Donald just put out a live nightfly album with this song on it.
Pure genius. The entire album is a masterpiece. Thanks, outrageous one for requesting this. BTW, Mel Torme did a swinging cover of this in the late '80s.
I remember the day I bought this album in 82. I was already a Dan Fan and was so curious to hear Donald solo. To say I wasn't disappointed is an understatement. It remains a favourite album to this day, and this is my fave song on it. Great reaction, love the channel!
This whole album is so enjoyable from start to finish. The instruments and the beautiful harmonies blend into shades of Steely Dan. A lot of the songs were written about Donald's life in the 50's and 60's. Nominated for 7 Grammys, The Wall Street Journal in 2008 called this album one of pop music's sneakiest masterpieces. Just sensational. Great reaction. Thanks Harri and The Outrageous One for a great tune. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I remember getting this CD from my girlfriend back in 1982. I had a fairlyy high end sound system at the time. As I recall it was one of the first "all digital" recordings and it took eight months to record. The results are a masterpiece.
This is a great solo album by Fagen. There is a more recent release, "The Nightfly Live", very cool, and I bought the MP3 album the moment I first discovered it! I always enjoy your reactions!
Ònce of the greatest jazzy albums I`ve ever heard - Donald Fagan is just a great musician but I miss Steely Dan.I`am sorry if i hurt some Donald Fagan fans it's not my intention but i like Steely Dan so much... I hope you all get a great indian summer and a wonderful time - best wishes from hamburg (germany)
Donald Fagen says this was dedicated to all the music he grew up listening to in the 1950s. I was only born in 1958 so I had only heard a small amount of what he spoke of as I grew up in the 1960s and 70s. But this was the first 100% digital album ever recorded and released for public consumption. Digitally recorded, mixed and mastered. It sounded superb back in 1982 and it sounds superb now in 2022, as well! And the music is timeless! 😉🙃😎💘🎸
You owe it to yourself to bathe in the brilliance of Donald Fagen where he commands the "New York Rock And Soul Revue: Live at The Beacon". This is like a super Steely Dan Live with A-list stars such as Michael McDonald, Phoebe Snow, Boz Scaggs, Charles Brown, Eddie and David Brigati. For an added treat his climate change song "The Weather In My Head" off his "Sunken Condos" album. Don't forget the other half of Steely Dan, Walter Becker and his album "Circus Money".
DF can really play all those vintage keys so well! Hammond organs, Rhodes pianos, piano, Moogs etc. His solo albums are outstanding, and deep wells of satisfying, groovy music. The Nightfly (1982), Kamakiriad (1993), Morph The Cat (2006), and Sunken Condos (2012). "New Frontier" "I.G.Y." "I'm Not the Same Without You" "The H Gang" "Tomorrow's Girls" a cover of Dion's "Ruby Baby" "What I Do" "The New Breed"(with Michael McDonald) "Countermoon" "Good Stuff" "Green Flower Street" "Century's End" "True Companion" "Florida Room" "Big Noise New York" "Security Joan" "Mary Shut the Garden Door" (way more)
My favourite track on the Album, loved it since I first heard my older brother play it in the early 80s. Sneakily I used to play it while he was at work and I had just got home from school!
This album made me so happy when I heard it. Walter and Donald had gone their separate ways but that sound was still alive. (They did reunite, poor Walter struggled mightly with drug addiction. It took a great toll on him and his health.)
This whole album is great. I'm not saying Walter Becker wasn't a genius too, because he was. There is just something about Donald's solo albums that I really enjoy 🔥👍🏼
Musically, _The Nightfly_ could have been outtakes from _Aja_ or _Gaucho_ . Lyrically, however, _The Nightfly_ is the polar opposite of those other two--there is a nearly complete lack of cynicism on it, and is full of hope and wonder.
The entire album is a pleasure. If you ever get the chance listen to "The Goodbye Look" off the album. Such a cheery song with a contrasting dark story.
I bought this album when it first came out (the Night Fly). Amazing, but you have to admit that while it was a solo effort by Donald Fagen, it was Steely Dan. Walter Becker was an important contribution to the genius duo of Steely Dan, but Donald Fagen was the heart and soul of Steely Dan (RIP Walter!!). Listen to the whole album (excellent in all aspects) and you will hear what I mean.
While the ‘40s style vocal harmony says “Ohhhhhh Miami!”, I have and will always hear it as “Ohhhhhh whammy!” It’s such a catchy song, and to this day I’m honestly not sure if I like it or don’t. Great reaction nonetheless. Be well!
The g in Fagan is the hard g, as in "got". (little factoid you probably already know: the hard g sound is English, and the soft g sound is French.)This song and "The Goodbye Look" are my favorites on this album. Maxine and Ruby are good, but it's this on and The Goodbye look that I love the most. This is straight jazz.
One of the best albums of all time I have the DVDA version of the Nightfly with advanced stereo and surround sound Harry check out KULEE BABA an outtake from the Gaucho album their is a perfect demo on UA-cam a hidden gem !
If you're a musician, especially a pianist, you understand what genius "Maxine" is. Chord voicings go beyond anything outside of the most complex jazz...and yet it swings with beautiful harmonies. "Maxine" was installed in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame as one of the greatest compositions of the 20th century.
This track and the Nightfly album in general are fantastic, but are somehow lifted when listening to the Nightfly "DVD Audio" release, in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround- on a decent system. Check out WJAZ ("...an independent station") from this album.
Yeah, I can understand your association of the song with "doo-wop." Back then, however, I heard it referred to as "Be-Bop." (Yet, Be-Bop covered more than just a walking bass line and cool piano fill-ins.)
Agreed, definitely not long enough!
Literally a genius and perfect record from start to finish, and of course, made by the genius that Fagen is.
My first CD ever purchased! Need I say more? The Nightfly should be in everyone's discography collection.
Pure genius. The entire album is a masterpiece. Thanks, outrageous one for requesting this. BTW, Mel Torme did a swinging cover of this in the late '80s.
Could not…..agree…….more….. masterpiece is an understatement this and Aja two of the greatest recordings of all time
I bought the Mel Torme CD just for that and his fantastic version of The Goodbye Look.
What a singer with such recognizable voice.
I remember the day I bought this album in 82. I was already a Dan Fan and was so curious to hear Donald solo. To say I wasn't disappointed is an understatement. It remains a favourite album to this day, and this is my fave song on it. Great reaction, love the channel!
Me too! Donald, or the Dan what more can you ask for, pure elation!😊😊
It just SWINGS! I can still dance to this stuff at 70...
"Ruby Baby". A remake of a nice little 50's diddy. Just plain smoooooooth!
The best version of Rudy Baby ever recorded in my opinion.
This whole album is so enjoyable from start to finish. The instruments and the beautiful harmonies blend into shades of Steely Dan. A lot of the songs were written about Donald's life in the 50's and 60's.

The Nightfly is truly a perfect album in every possible way!
Fantastic album, start to finish, one of the best. What a great sequel to his Steely Dan days.
This is a great solo album by Fagen. There is a more recent release, "The Nightfly Live", very cool, and I bought the MP3 album the moment I first discovered it! I always enjoy your reactions!
How I love this Steely Dan renaissance. Wonderful to see how later generations recognize still great and timeless music.

I've always loved Donald Fagen's voice, thanks for requesting this one. Love to hear new songs by my old favorites !😉💫✌🎶🎧🎤🎸
This is yet another great song from a really fantastic album. For me, this is one of those "desert island" albums.
Great song.
Great album.
Great channel.
In my top 10 of albums, not a bad tune on it
I agree, definitely my in top 10 albums!

What magnificent organ solo on a wonderful tune. What a groove!
I cant believe someone finally reacted to this….and Im glad it was you 😃
This is a bouncy lil tune...excellence of execution!...as usual...greetings Harri ma man!

Love this song, love the album. Thanks, Harri!
You will clap for every cut from this album.
One of my favorite cuts on the Night Fly album, particularly the CD version which was digital from end to end.
My favourite track on the Album, loved it since I first heard my older brother play it in the early 80s. Sneakily I used to play it while he was at work and I had just got home from school!
Dude...his name is pronounced FA gan (hard "g"). Love your channel. You post the best stuff.
I have loved Donald Fagen my whole life. Almost 60 years. This is my favorite song. Of course, I am a native Floridian. 😊
Always a pleasure to spend some time with you, Harri. Your sincere love of music is palpable.
smooth album. great writer/musician
This album made me so happy when I heard it. Walter and Donald had gone their separate ways but that sound was still alive. (They did reunite, poor Walter struggled mightly with drug addiction. It took a great toll on him and his health.)
Great reaction. Keep on going👍💕
This whole album is great. I'm not saying Walter Becker wasn't a genius too, because he was. There is just something about Donald's solo albums that I really enjoy 🔥👍🏼

This album is a masterpiece from start to finish.
The tempo is perfect, as is the song.
Listen to this album from beginning to end and enjoy the journey. I promise you, the ride will be worth it.
Great comments as usual Harri .." playing games with my soul " wonderfull stuff . A supberb track not heard that often ..❤
The entire album is a pleasure. If you ever get the chance listen to "The Goodbye Look" off the album. Such a cheery song with a contrasting dark story.
Such a great song to end such a great album!

I always took it to be "Hammond" as it introduces the organ solo
Masterpiece.
The g in Fagan is the hard g, as in "got". Maxine and Ruby are good, but it's this on and The Goodbye look that I love the most. This is straight jazz.
IMHO, this is Donald Fagen’s’ best solo album, and it could be seen as a Steely Dan side project.
My favorite song on the album. That and Ruby Baby.
Nice One !!!!!! Donald is the Best
one of my favorite albums. other than your reactions I only listen to it on vinyl.
One of the best albums of all time I have the DVDA version of the Nightfly with advanced stereo and surround sound Harry check out KULEE BABA an outtake from the Gaucho album their is a perfect demo on UA-cam a hidden gem !
Saw them in. June, they were great 👍
Listen to Maxine, same album.
Check out Donald Fagan's song Snowbound. Man, it's super lit!✌️
This track and the Nightfly album in general are fantastic, but are somehow lifted when listening to the Nightfly "DVD Audio" release, in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround- on a decent system. Check out WJAZ ("...an independent station") from this album.
The Nightfly is my desert island album!❤❤❤
The space between the bass notes is perfect. I believe Greg Phillinganes did it.
Yeah, I can understand your association of the song with "doo-wop." Back then, however, I heard it referred to as "Be-Bop." (Yet, Be-Bop covered more than just a walking bass line and cool piano fill-ins.)
Fab song jazzy cool!
Mel Torme actually did a cover of this one. You should give that a try.
There is a live version available of Spotify " The Nightfly live " under Donald Fagen
I don't dance but boy, this song makes me want to. Maybe I'll just walk rhythmically😂.
Thanks!
Thank you thank you thank you ✌🏾🖤
Crank it up !!!!!
It's about the Cuban Revolution, specifically the exiles of the early 1960's.
The LP was a snapshot of 1959.
If you like that kinda group vocal style, off this same album, try "Maxine".
A little big , bandish, like a little 40sish.
My favorite song this album is ruby baby or Maxine.
Check out "NEW FRONTIER"....!
Here's the live version from the Nightfly live lp that was released earlier this year - ua-cam.com/video/VojIs7zuKHo/v-deo.html
Not Faggen It’s Fay-gann. Don’t listen to singles on this album. Listen to the whole album. Yes it’s old funk but the album is awesome.
Florida Room is the best cut on the album imo.
Florida Room is not on The Nightfly it's on his second solo album Kamakiriad. Great track all the same.
Just to let you know, it's pronounced 'Faygan', not 'Faygen' 😊
Cab Calloway.
"Fagen" is pronounced with a hard G, rather than the J sound you use. Try his TRANS ISLAND SKYWAY.
To me it’s a takeoff on Louis Prima - like ´just a gigolo´
Catskills?
Yeah try to hit that
Hasn't been done and nobody is going to do it
It's okay, I don't really get this album, not into lounge light jazz music or any jazz for that matter.
This isn’t jazz.
