- The ITV Network: Part 10 - Westward TV (Westward Television)
Our journey through the ITV Network continues here on the Ident Review Extra! This time around, we heading to the South West of England, to take a look at the franchise that served the region for 20 years, from 1961 to 1981. Featuring the iconic Golden Hind ship as the main part of its identity, I'm of course talking, about Westward Television!
The Ident Review Extra began in the April of 2020 and covered all of the idents seen on BBC2 during the 1990's and early 2000's. After a Christmas run in December, the series has had a long rest. But now it's back, taking a trip through all the different regions of the ITV Network!

RIP
Associated Television 24th September 1955-1st January 1982
Southern TV 30th August 1958-1st January 1982
Westward TV 29th April 1961-1st January 1982
associated television didn't die like westward and southern, it got its legal name and branding changed to central. westward closed early somewhere in the april(?) of 1981 but its onscreen presence was still known as westward until 1982. as for southern, yk how that happened
I live in South West England and remember the colour Westward TV ident very well. I think I was around 6 years old at the time. I also remember the local magazine programme at 6.pm on week days. It was called Westward Diary. Great memories! Thanks for the upload! :)
Your videos have inspired me to do my own ident review series of the kids TV channels we have here in America
Disney Channel, Junior and XD has shut down last October 2020 in the UK where you live.
Thanks for the great videos of your thoughts of the ident branding that makes the greatest channels in the world so special
Bring back Gus Honeybun!
Very majestic and old world like. Another station staying local before the modern age. The ship is striking and is not very well known, due to its short shelf life. But it's ancient compared to the Welsh stations that preceded HTV.
My favourite ident from Westward would be the colour ident. The B&W ident is also pretty cool, but I prefer the colour ident because I much prefer it in colour than in B&W.
Anyway, the modeling of the ship is absolutely fantastic! And I also like that the ship logo has never changed all the way up until TSW took its place!
Always nice to have consistency throughout the decades! 😁
..long shot but...does anyone know what happenen to the film of the local interviews ?, I'm looking for Sept 1st 1977 in particular, interview with the Sex Pistols in the Pub next to the Garden venue in Penzance, any help please
Vague memories of this. I was born in the mid 70s, so the switch to TSW happened when I was still in single digits.
Yes, Westward was relatively short lived, but it had an impact... many people still referred to the ITV franchise as Westward, even though it was TSW or even Westcountry. TSW was even shorter lived... And while Westcountry TV still exists on paper today in my mind Westcountry committed a crime almost worse than murder: forcing TSW to send Gus Honeybun out into the wild.
TSW should have retained their franchise. Had they only bid about £6m less, and they thought Westcountry had bid £13m.
I remember that at the start of the day's broadcasting, they used to play an introduction with scenes from around the region, and a wonderful theme tune. I wish I could hear it again.
The first Westward TV ident shown has the basic ukulele tuning jingle
I don’t really keep up with ITV regions, so this is gonna be all new to me.
Also, is the Golden Hide preserved? I’d love to see it in reality.
Hope it's an enjoyable discovery 😊
There is a replica of the Golden Hind. I saw it on a day when there were school visits. It seemed too small to be able to sail around the world with the crew it would have carried, but when I asked what scale it was, expecting it to be 3/4 scale, I was told it was full size
You got any footage of channel television or ctv anywhere can’t find much at all
I seem to recall the lovely Fern Britton, being a continuity announcers and news reader on Westward TV, there's a video on youtube of her carrying on chatting after close down one nightr
This was my Dad's ITV region before moving in 1976
In the first three Westward idents, the ship reminds me so much of the Blue Peter logo... I wonder if it's the same ship?! 🚢 ⚓
The ship used in Westward is the Golden Hind, the flagship of Sir Francis Drake, who came from Devon. I must admit that it does bear a resemblance to the Blue Peter ship.
😎
We're left Yorkshire,London, east anglia,Wales and Tyne tees (can't remember what region tyne tees in)
Northeastern England
I hope its feeling spooky for you now as halloween is coming up. It sure is for me
And an update, I have played the edge of reality on ps5 and you were right; it's great!
After south west,london
Great I dents
Brilliant video Adam Westward TV was ok from 1961-1981 then in 1982 replaced into TVS West
The golden hind was the name of sir Francis Drake's ship. ITC had a sir Francis Drake TV series in the 50's/60's.
I wonder if the ship used in the ident is taken from that show???
go devon!!!
🥳🥳🥳
Nice ship ident. Did that station cover Bournemouth area or was that Southern?
Man's rlly just like "ok blue Peter channel"
The first variant had a strangely calming vibe
The calm waters of the sea! 😊
and there were the channels 9 and 12 for stockland and caradon respectively
What a jolly good ship! And what a jolly good video Adam!
Thank you Roger! 😁
