Just found out Ryan Reynolds is making a documentary on John Candy. Candy's family gave him a bunch of home movies and helped out making the film. I'm looking forward to it!
I'll be looking forward to seeing it as well. But I'd also LOVE to see a biopic on John Candy. But I don't know if any actor today can do him justice playing him. 🎥😍📽
My wife and I got stuck in Chicago in 2000 and was taken to El Rancho for a free overnight stay through our insurance company. And even though we didn't stay in room 6, I can verify with old photographs, that the rooms were identical to the rooms in the movie. The office had photos and memorabilia from the movie and the owner told us filming locations and stories about having lunch with John, John and Steve.
@@jtmichaelson I used to pass the El Rancho all the time on my trips to Chicago. It ceased being a motel years ago. Last time I went past it I believe that a landscaping company had taken it over.
I was so fortunate to have been invited by John Candy himself, to spend the day on set , I was able to get a couple of great pictures. The Braidwood Hotel was the set for the day. One of my best memories. Meeting Steve Martin, John Candy and John. Hughes. Thank you for everything. ❤
If you are ever in the Western New York area, several scenes were filmed there. All the highway scenes were filmed on the 219. The diner is also nearby. In addition, all the railroad scenes were filmed in Gowanda. The line is still in use for tourists. They actually still have one of the train cars painted up as “Contrak” but it is in rough shape.
@@JJSA1985 2 Jamestown St. Gowanda. It was recently renovated so the circle chairs they sat in the movie is not really there, but the counter still exists and they have good food. A wall in the sitting area has old restaurant photos and a news article from the movie shot.
When they board the train (that eventually breaks down) it was filmed in South Dayton, the same location that “The Natural” used when Hobbs strikes out The Whammer on three pitches. Same train station.
Best movie of all time can’t wait to see all the deleted scenes together already seen most on UA-cam thank you for getting the scenes to reality for us!
This video was excellent. Exploring and investigating the locations where a movie was filmed is a facinating study of the past. You embarked on a journey to follow in the footsteps of the crew who created the movie, and fitting for Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, had a few twists and turns.
This was fantastic! I've never visited Chicago, but so many great movies from my childhood were filmed there that I feel like I have a small connection to it.
Planes trains and automobiles is one of my favorite films. It has a great vibe in it and it's so funny with Steve Martin and John Candy bring to the Surface as Fantastic actors. A sense of humor goes a long way and making people laugh it's awesome 🥰
That's how I felt when I saw his video about the lost version. Most people I know irl are barley familiar with the movie. That video was how I found and became a fan of the channel
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is my favorite Thanksgiving considering there is no other favourite Thanksgiving film. John Candy made this film for me and his performance as Del Griffith is his greatest role of his career RIP to John Candy one of the greats
I swear man. You get me every time with your devotion. Also your style is flawlessly executed. I wanted to make sure I mentioned that. Edited and sound all of it.
the editing and reference at 4:08 made me choke on my drink. I wasn't expecting that bit of comedy from you, and it was absolutely fantastic. Cheers to you, mate. that was great timing.
I can't wait for the 4K Blu-Ray, not only for the wonderful movie but to finally see all of the deleted stuff that's never been released. I pre-ordered this INSTANTLY.
I actually saw this movie with a homeless coworker in my hometown. The guy was literally sleeping in his car. I remember he asked me if I wanted to go catch the late night movie with him after we got off work. I had no idea it was going to be planes trains and automobiles. This movie means a lot to me as well. I look at it differently than most people do because of the first time in the way I experienced the film. Great video!
I live in the Chicago suburbs and a few years ago I had to drive to Woodstock to pick something up for my dad. While I was there I drove to the town square and took some good pictures of the courthouse where the car gets towed and the the gazebo that they used in Groundhog Day. The town is definitely a hidden gem. Great video! PTA is an awesome pick for your favorite movie ever.
All this time I thought the "Neal pieces it together" ending was a later-draft scripting change, not an 11th-hour editing change! Amazing the effect great editing can have.
Thanks for bringing these details to light 🕯️ What treasures John Hughes and John Candy were to society. We are blessed to have walk the earth at the same time they lived 💔 and shared their gifts
"Enjoyed it" would be such an understatement. Loved it! A great movie whose ending still tugs at my heart just to recall (made all the more so since Candy's far too soon passing); this video helped add a cool new layer to it. And great ending holding up that scene picture to line up with the real street. Gave me a big and much-needed smile. Thank you.
One of my favorite movies growing up from the 80’s… just the humor and style, the background stuff and outfits. All around great movie and nice ending. And yeah that piecing together part, wow it’s great stuff in short amount of time! Another movie from this era I still like is “Coming To America” 😂
As a person who grew up in the Midwest in the 80’s and 90’s, and has spent a ton of time in the Chicago area, I’ve always been a huge John Hughes fan. But oddly enough, Planes, Trains and Automobiles was one of the few Hughes movies I didn’t see until very late in the game, probably around 2000 or so. But once I did, it instantly became one if my favorites, bringing back so many vivid memories of my life in the Midwest. And it’s also become almost a tradition to watch around Thanksgiving each year for me. The ending has truly resonated with me more over the years, because the first 8 years of my career were a dream. But in the years since, I practically had nothing, and have had to be creative about hiding it and putting on a good face around my friends. But so many images in this movie are like a snapshot of things from my childhood. One in particular is the motel Martin and Candy stay at near the freeway. Even as a kid I remember staying at two story motels like that, with exterior room access, next to a freeway, with a farm fiend nearby, and those bleak, cold, overcast Midwestern fall/winter days.
I visited the El Rancho Motel twice. Once while the great neon sign was still up. Once after. They had put the sign on the ground behind the motel. Think they were trying to sell it? At that time, it seemed like the motel was more of a long-time living apartment situation. Some very kind ladies showed us about. She let me peek in her room. Which was very much the same as the movie. Think it was room 9. One woman was actually living there when they filmed. If the office would have been open. You could have got a free El Rancho post card. Say you were very close to the Braidwood inn. Well, the motel in Braidwood Illinois they filmed at. I look forward to your next video almost as much as the new release of PT&A Thanks
PTA is one of my favourite movies of all time. Believe or not I thought I was the only person who liked this movie. I watch it every year right before Thanksgiving. Thaws an awesome video you made! Thank you!
Just based off the photos of the station, you can see the side of the building with new bricks in it indicating a huge remodel. So I would say 100% you are correct that you found the right place. I also agree with you, when you mentioned you were sad about it not looking like it used to. Change and time sucks. So many movies that I love from the 80s have changed so drastically. Watching alot of those before/after type videos just gets me teary eyed. Thats why I love 80s movies so much, atleast there I can still feel the vibe of those days.
Crazy to think about how wide your content has reached over such a short time. Always feel like I've subbed recently but I guess a year or two hassss passed now damn you're killing it g
I'm honestly gonna cry. This is a great video for a film I absolutely love. And knowing that I can find the station easily for being in the Chicago area makes me extremely happy. Thank u for this
This is fantastic!! This movie is number 3 on my list of my all time favorites!! Thank you for this! I can't wait for the 4K Blu Ray and an hour and 15 minutes of deleted scenes!!! That's crazy!!!
You know the only reason I watched this movie was because of the video you made a year ago. Now it’s one of my favorite John candy films. Thank you for introducing me to this movie.
This is one of the best video you’ve ever made.. it’s a culmination of a great video you put out and I DO believe you were responsible for the interest and the 4K Blu-Ray coming out in November. You’ve just earned yourself a new subscriber. Congrats Joe 🙌🙌🙌
Your love for this movie and John Candy rivals mine. seeing these locations brings back a flood of memories from seeing the movie for the first time! well done
Just want to say how much I enjoy this channel. I really like you and the work you do to highlight so many movies I loved from years gone by. Often times you remind me of films I saw decades ago but have completely forgotten. I like PTA a lot and it's always fun to hear you talk about it. I was a boy in the 70's, so I got to see Steve Martin's rise to comedy legend first hand and loved it. I remember him on SNL before I even knew what SNL was (King Tut, Two WILD and CRAZY guys!, etc). I saw him transition to films with movies like All of Me, Roxanna, and My Blue Heaven and others all the way up through his Father of the Bride remakes. He's always been a huge part of my comedic development. While I give Douglas Adams the top spot for people who influenced my sense of humor, Steve Martin would likely take the silver medal. Keep up the great work, Joe!
I used to just LOVE watching Steve Martin on Saturday Night Live in the 70's (back when it was STILL funny)! Thanks for sharing! You brought back a lot of fond memories! 🤣
Thank you for being the kind of nutter that would actually take the time to PHYSICALLY go to these places & check them out all for your love of these awesome movies! Planes Trains & Automobiles (when I eventually saw it in honour of my mother after her funeral) made me almost piss myself laughing (my mother, being from a Navy family had a mouth like sailor, as do I, so the "F" scene really got me...plus more) & made me cry in the end....just like my mother. THANK YOU FOR THIS! 🙂
Love this and can't wait for the new release! Scott on tape found the remains of the train they used and I think he visited the same station and now we have confirmation!🤘🥳
I’m so glad they didn’t go with the ending of having Del follow Neil home for several reasons. For one, it makes Del seem way too creepy and clingy. In the Final Cut, he’s clingy, sure, but he’s just a lonely guy. Following someone like that is too much. Second, the final ending shows that Neil has grown. Before this trip he was more selfish and wouldn’t have cared about Del and probably wouldn’t have even had the emotional capacity to put together the pieces. Him going back to find Del shows that he’s grown as a person.
Can't tell you how happy I am that I ran across your channel about a year back. Great video. Thank you for all the diligent research. I don't buy DVDs very much anymore but I sure as hell will be getting this one when it comes out. Just the few deleted scenes that I've seen thanks to you sold me instantly. God what a film. Watch it every year since it came out.
Oh wow! The passion you have for these films is infectious. I absolutely love it! I can't wait for the new deleted scenes to be released. John definitely made the right decision with altering the ending to the one we have now though, what a genius! Thank you for everything you have done for us Joe! Keep make these videos!
Thanks, Joe. Nice sleuthing work! I'll always watch any of your videos telling me new details about a John Candy film. PTA is still one of my favorite movies. Love when they're all frozen stiff in the back of the truck - even the dog. And I must say, those earrings I bought from Del do make me look 16, maybe even 17.
You capture the pathos and pleasure of our nostalgia for the films of our youth in a way that is very earnest and endearing. I'm really glad to see that you're doing so well on this platform.
Yeah good stuff Joe - don't be afraid to do more of these location videos and take your time with them (length wise) - they're interesting and fun to watch.
This is awesome news! I'd always been a fan of John Candy, and love Uncle Buck, but had never seen Planes Trains and Automobiles. It wasn't purposeful, I just said never gotten around to it. After your video I watched it and enjoyed it, but thought the deleted scenes would have made it more impactful and added some emotion. I look forward to the special edition Blu-ray! I totally credit you with this, and hope it can happen for other great movies. Thank you for what you do.
Your videos get better and better. This was awesome as I am a massive fan of this movie and watch it at least twice a year. I'll admit, there was a few years there I think I watched it six or seven times. Thank you so much for doing such good research and showing all these amazing locations! ♥️
I would love for you to do a National Lampoon's Vacation Location Tour. That whole film is filled with cool places; and the film's a classic, so it'd be neat seeing where all the magic happened
Excellent video. I really enjoyed this, your commentary and your adventure. I love this movie because it is a gateway into a world I didn't get to experience being born in '93, and living on the west coast. East coast and midwest are foreign to me. Snow, holiday travel, all that is unfamiliar so this movie encapsulates that experience for me. Not to mention the time period. It's so fascinating.
It's funny you were looking for the station, because I was looking for it on Google yesterday. Not nearly as in-depth as you, but what a weird coincidence. That totally looks like the same space, albeit remodeled. Another great video, I'm a HUGE fan of it as well and I was also looking at the road that Neal and Del were riding in the back of the truck with the dog.
I swear every video is like a pipeline from my mind to your channel. Every single video is something I’ve been so enamored with and hits so nostalgic to my childhood. An interesting side-comment: your videos have helped my dad and I keep a wonderful relationship as he ages, I cannot wait to send him this video and chat later today.
An amazing update on the movie. I'm not surprised it's your favorite. I wish they would release all the reels of John Candy that they shot. He must've consumed reels like breakfast with his random inserts while finding a proper punch line.
I cannot wait to pop this movie on again, and watch it with the girl I love while eating some comfort food with her. This was a great video. Hopefully, as an European, I can visit Chicago once, or more.
I actually now want to watch Planes Trains and Automobiles for the first time after this. (By the way, I had a scenario similar to the movie. My family was going on a cruise, but our first cruise was cancelled, but we got a new cruise. After that, our plane was canceled and we had to stay at a hotel. Finally we made it to Florida, but our hotel was cancelled as well! Thankfully we were able to get on our cruise and had a great time. I call it Planes Trains and Automobiles 2: Kids and Boats.) This was awesome!

Yeah good stuff Joe - don't be afraid to do more of these location videos and take your time with them (length wise) - they're interesting and fun to watch.
Me and mine love this film. Thank you. Great work.
Was literally showing that video to everyone when I heard about the 4K coming out. Another great video of PT&A. Great stuff!
Your videos get better and better. This was awesome as I am a massive fan of this movie and watch it at least twice a year. I'll admit, there was a few years there I think I watched it six or seven times. Thank you so much for doing such good research and showing all these amazing locations! ♥️
You got me, a grown ass man all emotional. Great work, excellent videos and channel my man!
I'm surprised that anything looks even remotely the same. Good work!
You stoked the fire of the conversation for sure.
Love this channel...
Me too!
I like it… but I like it a lot 🤭
Me too!

I thought I was it’s biggest fan. You are by far the Dean. Awesome!
4:08 sound bite from Yello’s Lost Again gave me a good laugh
I would love for you to do a National Lampoon's Vacation Location Tour. That whole film is filled with cool places; and the film's a classic, so it'd be neat seeing where all the magic happened
Excellent video. I really enjoyed this, your commentary and your adventure. I love this movie because it is a gateway into a world I didn't get to experience being born in '93, and living on the west coast. East coast and midwest are foreign to me. Snow, holiday travel, all that is unfamiliar so this movie encapsulates that experience for me. Not to mention the time period. It's so fascinating.
Thanks for everything you do. Man, this channel is one I never new I needed.
This is awesome. It should have way more views. I appreciate the on-location effort
Wish I could thumb up more then once...
Thanks helping me relive my fond memories through great research.
Hats off to you for your successful adventure!
I can only imagine how surreal it must have felt standing in those iconic locations.
Just wanted to say thank you, for all that you do. I love this channel!
I call it Planes Trains and Automobiles 2: Kids and Boats.)
This was awesome!
Man, what dedication to detail! Hope you enjoyed the trip!
