  • Home-grown peas are a true delight, offering a taste that far surpasses anything you can buy at the store. When you grow your own peas, you can harvest them at their peak freshness and sweetness, just as they plump up but before they become starchy and tough. The sugars in peas start converting to starch as soon as they're picked, which is why store-bought peas often can't compete with the tender, sweet bursts of flavor from those picked straight from your garden. Eating peas fresh off the vine, perhaps even while standing in the sun-warmed garden, is an incomparable pleasure, enriched by the satisfaction of having nurtured them from seed to pod.

I decided to try growing peas this year. It's my first time, although I have successfully grown potatoes, tomatoes and carrots in the past. I made three sowings ten days apart, the first on 13th May, and watched as they quickly emerged from the ground and started to climb the 50mm mesh I gave them. Now, the flowers are becoming the pods which hold the peas, so I should be enjoying the fruits (vegetables?) of my labours quite soon (although I just gave them water when it was dry, so hardly any labour involved). Seven weeks from seed to pod seems quick.
Which variety of pea are you growing, Marcus? Mine are "Kelvedon Wonder" from Thompson & Morgan. They're currently at a height of about 600mm, so ideal for under windows or such like.
