Why you need to upgrade/improve the 3D Printer Tevo Tarantula's Z Axis

I hope everyone is doing well! Today I am uploading a video that talks about how I upgraded and improved my tevo tarantula. Being a Chinese clone means that it comes with some downsides, but it is a cheap 3d printer that has some real potential! It mimics the prusa i3 style of printer, but the Z axis that it comes with could use some help. This is an easy upgrade to the Z axis and it improves the stability. This is a time lapse of me putting it all together, as I talk through the different things I encountered. I hope you all enjoy and please leave a like and comment!

What is your favorite upgrade to the tevo?
Georges Gadgets i think this is a nice upgrade
www.thingiverse.com/thing:2087128
THAT IS MY NEXT ONE! I have all the parts printed just need to film it all :D thank you for the suggestion, I am glad to see we are on the same page
My favorite upgrade would be throwing the thing outside, followed by gasoline and lighting it on fire.
I've had mine for over a year and despite making belt tensioners, new brackets, bracing, etc. it still can't print a part without ripples in it. I also have to re-level the bed constantly.
it took me 3 days at 6 hours a day to build it from the crap instruction book with no description of where the parts went. I had to take large portions of it apart several times because there would be steps in the wrong order later in the book that should have been pages earlier.
The default firmware that came with it was horrifically misconfigured and around 1/3 of the bed was unusable because the X/Y axis offsets were set to a nonsense value. The motors would also randomly start skipping steps causing the whole part to be trash from layer shifting. I had to find a custom firmware and spend an entire day modifying and compiling several versions to fix both issues.
The original hot bed that came with my printer also died because of a manufacturing defect with the thermistor used to measure the temperature. A bit of insulation must have been missing because the legs of the thermistor burned up and turned the whole area into a charcoal briquette. It took a month to get a replacement for it.
The only redeeming quality the printer has is the build volume, and ONLY if you can get the damn thing to work at all. It's a nightmare to assemble, troubleshoot and configure. I seriously recommend buying something else, even cheap printers these days are leagues ahead in quality and won't give you nightmares.
Instead of using the t nuts you are. Get the ones with a ball bearing in them. They hold them in place wherever you put them. And you can put them in like the cheap t nuts from the middle of a piece and not slide them in from the end. Make things so much easier
@@GGigabiteM I got mine about a month ago and it prints great. Maybe you just put it together poorly.
After watching your video on OoB vs DIY, I am considering getting, maybe, this for my first.
For you, the tevo would be a DREAM. I honestly think its right up your ally
Good video. Pro tip: have the super driver do the work for you next time. Disassemble it, home all axis. Your tevo is really shaping up now that you've replaced nearly every piece of it. Haha
BytePen Studios, thanks man! Where were you when I was doing this!? I think the Tevo is a really good tool to print but also to learn because of how easy it is to modify.
Good video, would have been nice if you had included before and after prints to show the improvement. Also why didn't you use the tevo to print the parts?
Chris, the final upgrade I will be doing is coming and I have a video planned to display the print quality, but that is a recommendation I have received from a ton of people. I will be sure to use it in any future printer videos :)
Also I received the tevo is a not working state and for convenience I have been using the prusa to print the parts :)
Love the vid man!! Keep it up ❤️
Thanks bud!
Dude wth. Between the low voice and the music I damn near fell asleep. This is too peaceful, haha.
Lol! Yeah, I have got that a few times on this video:)

I tried to improve on later videos, let me know what you think :)
Great video. Thanks for sharing
No problem Andy :) thanks for watching
Hi. Great video, being looking to get a TEVO T as its one of the printers which has spares readily available in SA. Wanted ask if you like tinkering and building things would this be a good printer to start with. Also would you go with a dual extruder or single one. There's not a major price difference. Thanks.
Spring coupler need only if drive screw fixed from axial movements like in metal working cnc's
you make very nice videos but if you coule turn the music down a bit it wouod be great
Ruud123 i am sorry the music is loud in this one! You are not the first to say that, I will fix it in the next one. Please come back again :)
How is the mk3 coming? Did you order it AND the mk2s with black parts or orange? And, do we get the files for these parts so that I could print them in black if I decide I don't like the orange? Thanks for the videos, Jim!
Jim, it’s all put together, I just have to run calibration and do some first prints! So excited to get the video up. You can get all of the STLs off their git github.com/prusa3d
I personally got black to match my other printer. I really enjoy doing this and I’m investing in a new camera to up the quality a bit! See you around :)
Keep going
I have a question about the tevo tarantula 3D printer the stepper motors do they have to be in order of where they go on the TiVo tarantula 3D printer because I'm thinking about purchasing one because if I do I was wondering if you can help me put it together step by step
Looks awesome! Would you recommend the tevo as a first printer?
Dan, thank you for the comment :)
I would recommend it because it is a great learning opportunity. But if you are looking for something more reliable out of the box I would lean to something else like a cr-10 or prusa
Let me know if I answered your question well enough!
I personally would not recommend the Tarantula as a first 3D Printer. While the community and support is growing, there are a ton of things that need to get upgraded on the tevo before it is good. I've seen this printer discourage first-timers from continuing to pursue 3D printing because of this. I've seen first-timers really like the monoprice 3D printers, especially the MP Select Mini.
Hi! I can use the slicer prusa for Tevo tarantula?
You sure can! You just have to configure the right profile and settings
The tevo groups on Facebook have a good starting point
I am thinking of getting a Tarantula myself, but could these parts be printed on the Tarantula it's meant for? Or would you recommend printing it on a different printer?
What’s up double G....is that double G for George’s Gadgets? Cause there is only room for one in this town (just joking I think there are three).
Of course these can be printed on your soon to be tevo, I just print on the prusa because it’s hooked up and convenient while work on the tevo.
Haven't seen a video without a single dislike in like, ever
I feel like I’m doing something right so I’ll keep on doing what I’m doing! That made me smile Nathan, thanks :)
@@GeorgesGadgets Don't mention it! Adding these mods to my Tevo right now, its working better already!
How do you invert the z axis in the code?
Jester I am actually working on the last video of this series where I alter the firmware. Hang tight, I don’t have an answer for you yet I’m sorry but I will
Can you do a video about the firmware or how to flash the firmware ?
I will add it to my list, I am working on my Prusa now and then I was moving to the X-carriage of the Tevo and after that I can do firmware. Thank you for the suggestion :)
I got permission from George's Gadgets to snipe this request with a series of videos I've been working on. To get spun up, you should only need to watch this video as the link I found for the tarantula firmware has the source code, not compiled hex for the firmware:
ua-cam.com/video/O_5V_Bp1MFg/v-deo.html
Official Tarantula firmware:
tevo3dprinterstore.com/pages/tevo-tarantula-firmware
Other people have also highly recommended this firmware for the tarantula:

AH-HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Look at that guy...he has hobbit hairy feet!
...
LOOK AT HIM! LET'S POINT AT HIM AND LAUGH LOUDLY!!!
Best comment ever.
it seems like it could be a very instructive video except I find the music distracting.
Hey Dennis, I’m what way is it distracting? The volume or the choice of music? Thank you for the feedback!
I have a slight hearing problem, this causes me to pick up on the loudest noise at the time and although your speech is clear to me, when the music kicks in it can drown your speech out so I try subtitles and then I miss what you are doing on the screen, hence I find myself in a no win situation. As for the choice of music, I won't criticise as each to there own although its not my choice now because of my hearing problem. However I will persist in watching your videos because they are extremely informative and my tevo arrived last night. Thanks for listening.
dennis, I will try my best to keep it at a lower volume. I am sorry you are facing that issue. I might look into the option of uploading a video with no music alongside the music version in the future or potentially on a different platform.
much better its get second z axis
I enjoyed finally being able to see your feet....
I specifically asked you not to look.....
