    Love the set up, gives me a better understanding as I too am setting up a 55gallon sump on a new 150gallon aquarium.. my only suggestion, delete the carbon, you don't need it.

      Carbon serves several purposes, helps clear water too! Drop chemicals or some on your hands without carbon, see how fast sensitive corals or other more sensitive fish struggle or die, it’s not like you need to go out of your way to put it in either, throw a mesh bag of it in… done

    Nice looking tank and sump. I “highly” recommend placing your electrical, surge protector “higher” up and off the ground and... be careful with that “air vent” on the floor, to the right of the tank. Personally I wouldn’t put the tank next to an air vent on the floor, but if you can, I’d protect that vent with “something” to prevent any water from draining into it.

    The only issue i see with your stand design is that it has an open bottom. If you have a bottom on it and killz it very heavily and then add a thick layer of latex paint it makes it water tight. So if you have a leak or an over flow situation it will contain the water in the stand and give you a chance to catch it before it floods your house. Also if you sand a small grove all the way around the tanks perimeter then drill a hole in the back in the middle of the groove. Then add a piece of tubing that runs to the sump. That way if the tank begins to leak it will just drain right back into the system. It will again give you time before flooding your home.

    Everything is awesome! You could put some more bio-home inside of the penguin to maximize the bio filtration. I would only worry when there is a power outage, your overflow box wouldn't prime.

    nice build...FYI though; if you're still using the IR thermometer, it doesn't work for liquids. Doesn't "see through" glass, liquids or other transparent surfaces - even though visible light (like a laser) passes through them (i.e. if you point an IR gun at a window, you'll be measuring the temperature of the window pane, not the outside temp)

    • @GSP-76
      @GSP-76 5 років тому

      If your water is still, you can point the IR thermometer from the top of a tank (lid open) and get temp reading off a rock or the substrate through the water...I've been doing that for a long time...the reading I get is like .2 degrees different from a wired aquarium thermometer...but yes, you can't point it through the glass...only through the water and preferably with the power head turned off.

    I see a lot of ppl make this mistake.one your sump water level is set too high for that tank of your pump stops it's gonna overflow.two those overflow boxes work ok to hook up a sump but your gonna be tired of that in a few months.unless you cant drill your tank then drill.is a cool idea for the return in the tank it can't pull but what's in that box Incase the pump stops.

  • @kashifmir497

    in case of power outage you have to manually trigger return water flow and if you are not there in this situation your water would stop going back to sump when power would come back and there would be water all around the room since electric pump would keep throwing water to tank from sump or you wont have enough water in sump to pump back to tank since no water coming back to sump from tank. In either situation you must put sensor in tank or sump.

    Thanks for the series of videos…they were very helpful. Just by chance, the system I’m currently designing is very close to yours…75 gallon display tank along with a 29 gallon sump. I was hoping to use a 40 gallon sump, but the cabinet I needed to build for it was just starting to get too big!
    I would like to ask you a few question if you don’t mind…It’s been a couple of years since your build…Have you been satisfied with everything? Looking back, should you have done anything different?
    I’d like to make sure I understand the safety measure you incorporated by using your old Bio Wheel filter for your water return. If there was a power outage, gravity would create a back-flow in your return hose. Since the return hose is in your Bio Filter, the only water that would back into your sump would be whatever was in the hose and just a small amount of the surface water sitting in HOB filter.
    What was the total height of your stand? I notice you didn’t build a lower cabinet floor in your stand, so you grabbed 3.5” in additional clearance to access & maintain your sump. How much clearance do you currently have from the top of your sump to the top portion of the cabinet?
    Appreciate your time. Thanks again for the video series. Nice build!

    • @Magny80
      @Magny80 5 років тому +1

      It will prefilter large particulates down to the smallest size it can filter. I have a micro sock on my return and gets down to micro sized particulates. I clean my sponge filter when its not flowing water anymore, which comes out to about every 2 months. The sock I take off each month to clean it out. Other than that, with my DIY wet/dry trickle tower sump, I only maintain it once a month. As for the display tank, I vaccum the gravel every 2-3 months. I dont do any water changes at all, but do top off my sump when the water level gets low.

    • @creu007
      @creu007 5 років тому

      @@Magny80 Over time, nitrates will build up in your aquarium. This process is continuous and unavoidable. I believe it will be compounded with zero water changes...
      For me, it's the biggest reason to do a weekly water change. But I have a highly stocked tank 100 gallons and about 50 cichlids and rainbows.

    I like the idea of that overflow box but it would always worry me that it might fail and I come home and the sump runs dry and tanks overflows onto the floor, dead pump, dead fish maybe! Make sure you keep that sponge on the overflow clean, if that clogs up which it will, you will have issues!

    Was there any particular reason that you didn’t use the first chamber in your sump when your water comes in to also put your mechanical filtration in? Seems like you could have eliminated one section and created a larger bio chamber. I suppose it would be beneficial when it comes time to change your mechanical filtration you wouldn’t have to mess with moving the hose. Maybe I just answered my own question 😬

    I noticed a lot of people use a cooler as a holder while they work on their aquariums. Is there a specific reason for this? i.e.e coolers hold the warmth in the water better? I just use a standard 10$ utility bin from WalMart, but if a cooler is much better I absolutely do not mind buying a 100 Quart.

      Mike Dean i would assume built in handles and some have wheels. Easier movement and of course insulation. He lives in a colder climate area. He also had a heater setup in the cooler. I guess it depends where you live and/or what you are willing to invest in (cooler vs cheap storage tub.)

  • @Randhart
    @Randhart 6 років тому +2

    Hey, your system looks great and I can see now how the penguin filter body is fitting into he setup.
    Just one comment regarding the old filter media you are using to seed the system, why don't you place the sponges from the old filters into the second chamber (the one holding the filter floss), that way the bacteria will be seeded to the new bio-media directly instead of having to go through the whole tank... not that its a problem, just quicker and also the sponges will preform as good biological filtration from the off as the tank water will have to flow through them instead of taking the path of least resistance to the pump. Removing them piecemeal will also allow the bacterial colonies to build up in the new bio-media... or just leave it in the system I guess ;-)

    • @jdofishtank6018
      @jdofishtank6018  6 років тому +1

      I understand your point. I want the already cycled sponges last, that way the new bio media will have more ammonia and nitrites to feed on thus growing more bacteria.

      D.H. Aquatics Yes this is a 75 gallon tank with a 29 gallon sump and it worked great. A 40 breeder will work as a sump also. Just as important also, is the overflow and return pump, how much GPH is being pumped.

      With the head pressure I’m getting about 760 GPH. Also added an ATO system to the sump with a separate 10 gallon top off storage tank. I should’ve probably went with just a 5 gallon ATO reservoir. Also added an API XP2 canister just purely for mechanical filtration, mostly bcuz of how much my African cichlids poop.

      The return is right at the waters edge, only a small amount will back flow into the sump.

    • @Magny80
      @Magny80 5 років тому

      The return he has is in the HoB filter shell, minimal siphoning from there. As for the overflow, the water will stop flowing down into the sump once the water meets the bottom of the grate on the overflow. At most, depending on the variation from the overflow and the return, the amount of water going into the sump once the pump stops would be about 1-3 gallons. On my return, I have an anti-siphon hole drilled into the tube since its inside the tank. But since he is using a HoB filter box for his return, the siphon will be very little.

    Been looking into picking up this tank and plan on using my current 29 gal for a sump. One thing I'm wondering is if the 29 gal would fit in the bottom of the stand that come with or it it necessary to build a custom stand?

      trevor byers If you watch the whole series you'll seen the sump didn't fit in the stock stand, that's why I built this stand.

    What pump are you using as an intake?because I can’t find anyone who uses a pump for a sump, they all just drill a hole in the tank and I don’t want to do that

    • @jdofishtank6018

      Josiah Kirchhofer watch the series on building all this. I have an overflow box on the tank and a pump in the sump. The pump pumps water from the sump to the tank, when the tank fills up enough water from the overflow box goes back to the sump.

    Is it overkill to add a second overflow box as a back up? Or some type floating shut off switch
