That's a good way to think about it, yes. And the issue with that is that everyone's satisfied at different levels, so trying to live up to someone else's definition of "good" probably won't be what satisfies you

@@Null82085 this will sound cliche and like BS but if you have that mentality then it’s true. If you don’t believe something is possible or can ever happen, then you’re never going to put in enough time energy or effort to make it happen. There are even studies that prove the power of belief - I’ll give you a quick example. In competitive track running, there was some milestone that was long thought impossible. I think it was the 4 minute mile. For decades it was talked about and attempted and eventually people just assumed it wasn’t possible. Then finally someone broke it, and guess what happened? Within a week, like 10 other people achieved it. So how is that possible, where did those 10 other people suddenly come from? People had been attempting it for decades and could never do it, but then once someone did do it now all these other people are suddenly able to? Well yes, and that was all that changed - they KNEW it was possible because someone else did it. They had the ability to do it before, but they didn’t have the mentality or belief system to keep trying until they did it. At least not until someone else did it, but that just proves how strong your inner game and positive thinking can be. The real point is if you don’t think it’s possible then you’re never going to invest the time in trying.

I was once told that getting to X Rank isn't that hard. I feel like that one comment has completely shot my motivation to play because I play at around an A Rank level. The person wasn't mean about it, but it still stung. Being told that made me feel like I had something to prove without being able to deliver upon expectations. I still have yet to renew my motivation to play again. It sucks, as I really do love this game.

i think it's genuinely what made me reconsider everything about ranked specifically. yes, i may not be the best player out there, but i made it to rank X and was able to maintain it so far despite many crushing losses, and that's good enough.

Thank you so much for this video! I feel like we don't pay enough attention to mentality and I wanted to give it another spin: instead of calling each other bad and engaging in this banter, we should think more about hyping each other up. Something like "great pick!", "good shot!", "nicely done!", "you're insane!" Can go a long way to boost your mate's confidence.
I've talked to a friend of mine about that and we've both noticed that particular weapon classes (most notably the backlines and chargers in particular) are very confidence driven. I.e. when they lose confidence, they'll start to miss their shots and play more passively. I don't mean to inflate anyone's ego, but try to keep morale as high as you can and think more about how you can lift each other up than to immediately criticize.
Another thing is when someone really messed up a play. Chances are that they already know that themselves and feel bad about it. However it doesn't matter now, because splatoon is incredibly fast paced and the game moves on whether you want it to or not. So something like "don't worry, it's fine, let's do x or y" may also go a long way. I've watched scrims where a team's entire communication broke down, because one player gets super defensive, because they know they messed something up or because their team confronts them mid-game.

    Remember, when X rank first came out in 2018, the rank distribution in North America was: C's, 33%; B's, 33%; A's, 20.7%; S, 5.2%; S+0-9, 6.4%; S+10+, 1%. So if you're B- or above, you're already better than a third of the player base; if you're A- or above, you're better than two-thirds.

We really don't need these negative stereotypes of comparisons to affect our mentality when playing the game. If we like the game and have a passion for it, we will strive to learn more about it. The more we learn about it, the more we switch from casual to competitive. The only thing limiting us from getting better is just that...us.
The game and franchise will no longer be around if we continue to have this awful crossfire of comparing ourselves to others. At least, not at the state it is in currently. We don't need Splatoon to become another toxic dramatic community where we talk trash to another. This is my favorite franchise of all time. I would hate to see it go down that path. True, every community has its ups and downs. Ultimately, it is up to us to establish our much we are into the games, what we want our skill level to be, and how much we are connected to others who share this passion. If those go away, what is left?

This video is pretty amazing along with all other videos posted here in 2021. Thank you for all your hard work! :) I personally can relate to this and just wanna mention that:
3:31 in the video hit deep. Back in Q2 2020 I had 1-2 X ranks and was new to competitive. I joined a team called Kuru Squidz and in one of our first few scrims we were up against a div 6 team that was way more experienced. One of our players had to go and we got a sub I think they were div 4. We pretty much got spawn camped and I remember the sub saying that they don't see us having a future in comp. Having placed dead last in my first 2 ink theory that really stuck with me and I truly believed that for a while. Eventually later in the year I got 2400xp and top 8 alpha bracket low ink. Seeing results that I thought were not possible for me helped me gain my confidence back. I had cracked teammates for that low ink not gonna lie but just feeling improvement in my play got me out of thinking I don't have a chance.
I don't know how to explain it but tbh that statement wasn't all that in a sense of calling us bad. I realised that after I had played with more people in comp. It was also in a sense that we can't make it far in our 'current state' indicating we were doing something wrong. I guess that we were 🤣 since the team had like 10 players we weren't used to each other and some of us were either muted or not making use of vc. At least it helped us realise that after some time lmao. But yeah still amazed how I never forgot how that made me feel back then.

To Requote The Joker: “All it takes is one bad day.”
While in my case - it took a wave of bad rounds to get me to snap and be Stagnated in my Ranks for 3 - 4 Months… thinking that is my Personal Limit and there’s no way out of it, like I’m meant to just be there forever.
I have this problem to envision something big (like Highest Rank and being On Stage in an Official Tournament), but as an action… it gets to feel that it was not meant to be and never will be, so I just have to go back to Reality.
Which is why, as of yesterday, I’ve officially Called It, I Retired from going for it, for the sake of both my Mental and Physical Limits.

I don't think it's a healthy thing for a real person to have as part of their philosophy.

I've seen how the view on gaming has changed (and hasn't changed). When I was little my family would occasionally ask, and tease, why I liked this thing or that thing, why did I like playing video games? I'd say its because they're fun.
    "But its for boys".
That was something that would get child me mad. Looking back now they probably just wanted to know why I liked this thing that was being marketed towards boys even though I was a little girl. It really is because its fun!....and Dragons and Dinosaurs are cool. I'm glad this is something that has changed overall and that, as far as I can tell, the majority of people are completely fine if not welcoming of other players.

Personally, I take offense to people saying “git gud” in Splatoon because it comes off as vague, it’s useless advice in disguise, and it can be often used to mock or make someone feel bad for complaining about anything. Like, I know I’m a bad player because I’m still new and have poor reflexes and aiming, but “git gud” doesn’t specify how to do it, what is considered “gud” and put unrealistic expectations on one’s self. Even if it’s a joke, there’s a layer of truth to it. I also take offense to people saying that I shouldn’t play the game because I WANT to get better and I WANT to play the game.

I know this is an older video now, I've been binging a lot of Splatoon content recently trying to improve, from the basics to watching high ranking and competitive players while getting advice. This applies so much more in any gaming community space, even I have to admit I joke with my friend who is WAY better than me at literally any game, being more technically adviced and just being able to pick up strategies and coordination more quickly than I. Everytime they missed something or died in a game they'd either joke they're bad or even I'd say, "get good/play good" when they're mostly always at the top of what I watch them do, I know and telling them they are a "good" player they sometimes say they're not and I try to reinforce with things like positive affirmations or less helpfully just saying "well, you're better than me" when we both know I'm not even near their skill set. I think this is something that should be taken into consideration because even I will solely blame my own skill when losing horrendously in a game. Even thinking back, sometimes I do feel discouraged when my friend says their bad or alternatively when they've trashed talked their teammate or the other team they're facing in a game even though most of the time it is just us and the other player(s) can't hear, it's still not the best mindset to go into.
What really hit home for me was about the minority bigotry you can get in games and ofc the sexism. As someone who is a minority and is on the more femmine side to gaming that also makes it hard. Bc now even in games I don't VC. People don't know you or anyone and you still hear or see in chats people absolutely dog piling on those. That's made me leave rooms and games completely while my friend also a different minority would report people or whatnot for being toxic, it doesn't seemlying effect them as much and I guess that'd go for the whole "thicker skin" and being praised for not letting stuff like that get to them.
I am all for coddling players to get them into a competitive scene if that's what they're going for! I have seen much more acceptance in the Splatoon community, even if it's by chance I see the most ideal content, it really makes me want to go further in this game than I have in others I wanted to get into but stopped out of feeling bad within it.

as a neurodivergent person who has been playing splatoon for a long time : thank you so so much for mentioning the treatment we have to face as a minority. we're used as punching bags by competitive players who don't treat us like humans, our disabilities are used as insults and we're not allowed to complain because we'll be dogpiled for "starting drama over nothing". we have no voice of our own in the competitive community and it's extremely difficult to watch people with platforms sweep it under the rug or even partake in the same behaviour. we never come up when they talk about treating people better, we're always an afterthought and more often than not, they don't care. the competitive community isn't a safe space for any kind of minority, and the very first ones they go to strike at are always women and neurodivergents. i know they'll never change, i know that the big competitive players will still never talk about what they've done to us, but it makes me genuinely so happy to see it acknowledged by anyone on the outside.

I believe that people are more often ignorant than evil, and that with time and better education people will start to wise up and treat people better in spite of their differences. But the fact that people don't treat you well now is still unacceptable and I'm so sorry that's been your experience. Whenever you have the energy to do so, keep telling your story, because consistently hearing the experiences of people who speak up about being mistreated is one of the most effective ways to change minds in the community. Me Too happened because people started speaking up about things they hadn't spoken up about before; it's a powerful thing to do.

When I sit down and want to have fun and get better is when I check the map and think of what I am doing. Also I respect every player and when someone destroys me I leave the game and think about what I did and how I can counter them. I would like to get X rank by this month but what ever happens, happens. Currently I have S+3 in rainmaker because I am just having fun. Fun is just learning how to get better and seeing improvement and that’s good enough for me. Every time I drop rank I know I will get it back and I do. X rank here I come.

There was a time where I got to the top of my expectations till things kinda went down. See, I’m always trying not to blame things on problems I can’t fix (like saying a weapon is OP, the splat was just lag, etc.) so instead I blame it on myself and things I can fix. There were always good days and bad days, and what I mean with things went down is that most of the times that I played they were bad days. "Good" is someone who watching their gameplay feels like art. Be it a frame perfect speedrun of the original super mario bros, A recreation of the Taj Mahal in minecraft, or whatever the hell it is that pannenkoek2012 does. Now you can have fun with a game you're not good at. I love TF2, and I can't even do more than one rocket jump in a row. And I feel no obligation to improve. But if I started a tf2 youtube channel, nobody would watch me because there would be absolutely nothing to see.
I suppose you could argue "what is art" if you prefer some degree of subjectivity. There's no rule against that. But the difference between being good and bad to me is a cut and dry "does this bring joy"

Amazing coverage on the topic! Interaction in games or even in general can be complex because context, ripple effects and one's perception of themself aren't always apparent. In fact, I'd say most of the time it isn't. So one may do something negative by accident without really realizing it.
Example: Even if you say "good game", someone who got hard on themself because they lost may think you are being sarcastic and take it negatively. That's not "you" for saying good game of course, but its also not necessarily "them" either. They may have got that perception of themselves or outlook on others from incidents that happened with others before you even played them. Can' even be a reflex thing without even realizing it. So the ripple effects before you even played them may be the cause. But it may still have a way of making you question your own conduct like if your tone of voice was off or something.
So the complexities and ripples add up over time even before you meet someone in a game. Yet probably could be alleviated a great deal if there was more good sportsmanship in general. That way the people who continually trash talk would stick out like a sore thumb rather than blend in. I mean when did such negativity even become commonplace anyway? You'd think such a thing would be nipped in the bud rather be allowed to flourish.

this was a great watch. I'm lucky so far, not having any experiences like what you described, but I'm also very new. I have a few friends who play the game and aren't serious the way I am, and have fun with the game. even though i picked up the game and put more time into it to improve, I wish I could help them find the drive to do the same, but I'm never going to force them into it, or call them bad for their picks.
I'll mention tips for their weapon, or offer some advice I've seen about a weapon, compliment them on their successes, but ultimately, how they like to play is what they are going to do, and I wont stop them because ultimately I want to see them play the game more.
for me, I'm going to play to see how far I can go. it's not about the destination, its about the road there. after the Splatfest in November, I'm going to grind and grind, and where I end up after that month is where I'll be. If I don't get any higher than where I am now, then thats just where I play at. but if I can go much higher then I'm going to get there.

As someone who has been relatively deeply involved in a small vg community that was stock full of trash talk and insult style jokes, i can say that in the right context between established community members who were clearly doing it for fun and kind of "putting on a show" it was enjoyable, but qt the same time that sort of humor would spill over to newer community members who werent as familiar with the culture or game, and it wasnt uncommon for newer players to be bullied for something as small as a bad take. So imo it kind of depends on the general maturity level of a given community, if they can keep it within the confines of ironic insults between established members and friends, then i think it can add a lot of excitement and character to a community. Otherwise tho it can def become toxic.

I just found this channel a few days ago thanks to reborn_na and this was actually the first video I watched.
And I want to share a, I guess it's not really a story, but something that happened just a few days ago.
I found a new comp streamer who is really really sweet.
He played with some other people league, no idea who they were I don't think they were streamers themselves but I think they are in a comp team.
They kept complaining about how much Splatoon sucks, and kept on going and going while the streamer was just like "Yeah...".
Apparently one of them felt really comfortable so they let out a big, loud, disgusting burp.
I don't like to judge people, but that one seemed like someone I do not want to interact with.
So I rolled my eyes, muted the stream and kept it on in the background.
These kinds of people are one of the big reasons why I never could get into competitive shooter games.
Take away from this what you want, maybe I'm too sensitive I don't know, but that day my interest in watching a coordinated team shrunk.

I learned from my time TOing Melee events that the times a person drives people away from the scene are almost always invisible to that person. The people being driven away are new and just dipping their toes in to see if they like it, so they only ever get to the periphery of the scene and people won't recognize them unless they're making an active effort to. That guy who burped in vc without saying excuse me didn't know you were watching but they turned you off the community all the same. That's part of why I hate it when people vocalize their problems with the game they play; sure, it's all just because we're more likely to criticize the things we love, but it comes across to someone who's not in the culture as an actual distaste for the game or the false sense that the game is "dead" (literally never say that about any game, it does no good for anyone).
I'm sorry you had that experience, but I promise there are better sub-cultures of the community for competitive players, so if you really love the game, don't let those people hold you back from enjoying it the way you want to.

I always understood "good" (in the context of games specifically, when talking about players) to mean "high skill" - but even then it's hard to quantify. Using my own questionable skills as an example, I would consider myself "good" at any Splatoon weapon with Splashdown, but that's because it's kind of a crutch for me - give me an identical weapon but with Baller and I will consistently lose because I won't know what to do with it, because I put so many hours into mastering Splashdown and manipulating Splash Jumps, but no one would realistically consider that a "high skill" way of playing the game, because being skilled at (what is considered) one of the least viable Specials doesn't mean I can consistently win with disadvantages or that I even know what I'm doing. I just know how to take advantage of my generalized anxiety disorder and use my baseline-high levels of fear to quickly react with "the panic button special" - maybe that's a skill not lots of people have, but it calls into question whether it's a useful skill to have to begin with

I have a thought on what you said about being "thick skinned". I agree that being able to consistently take direct insults towards you and your gameplay is a dumb and unproductive expectation, and i also think that there is a certain level required if anyone wants to both get better and interact with even the nicest communities. Of you are looking for feedback or advice on a discord server or online forum, then you have to be ready to take criticism of your gameplay people challenging your ideas. I have met people who leave servers or stop watching a youtuber just because they revieved a critique or heard a take they disagree with that was basically just "heres what i think and why" without any positive or negative framing. Ive also been on team/pickups where people are too scared to ask me or others to switch weapons or stop feeding. I cant help but feel that level of sensitivity or cautiousness stifles growth. Im not trying to say "kids these days are just sensitive snowflakes" or anything like that, just that being able to maturely take bluntly worded criticism (not blunt in an insulting manner, just down to earth) i think is a reasonable expectation.

I have a question,if I only use N Zaps and Splat Jr in ranked am I no more than an ink armor farmer? Or is there something more to it? (I do try to kill if necessary) I've tried branching out to more weapon classes but suck at them all even after a whole year of gameplay. Some input would be appreciated.

    • @SquidSchool
      @SquidSchool  2 роки тому +5

There are a lot of people who just play jr. and zap in competitive play, it's definitely a viable playstyle. In order to play those weapons the most effectively, part of the role (that nobody talks about because it's funny making fun of how so much of your k/a came from armor assists) is to take fights with your team once you initiate a push using armor. You also need to be able to see when using armor would be effective, which takes knowledge of how a team should be positioning for fights. You're just as invested in fighting as the rest of your team is; you just tend to want to get armor first.
Never feel bad about yourself for being better at some weapons than others; just use those strengths instead of considering it a weakness.

But it helped me a lot and I never wasted any time, neither do I today still pülaying lots of games. But this gid gut culture is a toxic waste productwe need to eliminate. For me not to git gud at Demon Souls means just that I have played many games and can't be bothered to live up to modern gamers standards. Most of the time thoe people saysing to git gud aren't even gamers, they are just there to troll and to make the environment toxic. I played and mastered games like classic Mega Man titles, Megaman Zero, Metroid games, several Castkevania titles including those 3D games. Several dozens of action games on so many systems. What on earth do I own to those toxic git gud clowns out there, those faceless phantoms?

I know this video was for many games in general. I just find it curious that, in games like super smash brothers and splatoon, because of aesthetics, these seems very harmless for people outside of these games. if you wouldn't be on these games and if you were from the outside, would you believe there are toxic people/trashtalkers there? It is funny for me just the thought of it LOL XD.
