- Thousands of residents are being evacuated from their homes as a large wildfire is spreading towards Athens in Greece, with some flames leaping as high as 25m (80ft).
The historic site of Marathon is among the areas where residents are being moved to safety by the emergency services.
Houses and properties in the nearby town of Varnavas were burning, according to the fire brigade.
Forty fires have broken out in Greece since Saturday afternoon with firefighters still battling seven.
More than 500 firefighters and 150 vehicles have been deployed to help put out the flames.

And there aren't many fire hydrants in the remote farm areas and most of the fire trucks in those areas only prepared for small fires as seen by them using small vans carrying limited water capacity. Plus like you said wind is blowing like crazy

I live in CA - similar climate to Greece. High temps, Dry climate, high wind, drought, very dry fuels, dead and down fuels in the mix, heavy dry vegetation, hills...

Nothing stops a fire like that, it burns till it runs out of fuel. Not good.

Greece was very capable of defending it but when you fire and lay off firefighters to higher cops and order the remaining firefighters to protect villas instead of doing their jobs the fire will obviously go out of control. There are people claiming they were there when the fire started and not a single chopper or firetruck approached and instead they were stationed in homes of oligarchs and politicians. This is what happens when a country is corrupt to the core.

@@ferred3056no they aren’t in the slightest. Animal’s (unless they are invasive) have a positive impact on the global eco-system whilst there are 8.2 billion humans so it’s not really much of a loss, in terms of nature. And who are we to judge what life is more important?
Many animals actually can escape. Even for those that cannot, wildfires have been around for quite literally as long as plant life has. They're not new. Nature is running its course.

Unfortunately we are in the same situation every year, in the same mountain, same location but closer and closer in the center of Athens. We don't have any green zone, kilometers of forests and mountains have despair 10-8years again and again. The government doesn't care.
The government isn't made up of deities. Greece has a huge air fleet of firefighting planes and helicopters. Way more than you would expect from a bankrupt state. The problem lies in that the Civil Protection authorities have not done enough to organise the human and other resources to effectively fight these wildfires. Also, the climate is changing rapidly. Greece and the mediterranean countries in general, have experienced the hottest summer since 1960 (as far as we know).
It's easy to point fingers and criticize from the safety of your house behind a keyboard.
Ahh this is sad. I love Greece. Always terrible to hear about these fires the Greek people and wildlife are going through 😢 I love everything about Greece. Beautiful places, people, food and cats.

Is it arson? I lived in Greece for 15 years in the Ionian. In Lefkada. A few years on a boat and then on land. I remember seeing small planes flying low into the bay to scoop up sea water to use for fires. Ionian has more rainfall so not so many fires 🔥. It is often arson, so agricultural land gets cleared and can be used for commercial purposes

that farmers steal money from the government, they are lazy and dont need help because they are rich. Which is not true but propably is enough for the detached government to not support them.
23/08/2024. From the past few days my daily routine has been opening UA-cam and searching for Greece travel videos and vlogs by locals there. Ever since DW released a few documentaries on Greece and Mediterranean islands, I've been obsessed with the clear blue water and beaches and most of all -- Silence. So today I was going to continue with my daily routine and instead of videos of clear blue water I see these huge fires that have engulfed this paradise.
It is so painful to just watch those pine trees get burned by the flames and not be able to do anything about it. For some weird reason, I feel like my own home is on fire and I can't do anything about it. My heart goes out to all the Greek people who have been displaced by these fires and also the ones fighting this tragedy.
I hope one day I will be able to see this paradise with my own eyes. Swim in the clear blue water. Take a walk in the beautiful Pine forests. Lose myself in the silence of this paradise. One day. 🖤💚🖤

I know braindead potheads on YT struggle with simple things like scale, so to remind you, Greece isn't a tiny island either.
