Looking for patterns and recognizable shapes out in the world is such a fun, relaxing, and creative thing to do; I could spend hours looking at clouds and letting my imagination find all sorts of things! This sort of creative play is also really easy to do with watercolor also, especially when you add a little art science to your process by sprinkling simple table salt into your wet paint! In this tutorial I walk you through, step-by-step, how to make beautiful one-of-a-kind watercolor art pattern bookmarks-a process everyone can do, especially with my helpful tips & tricks! Additionally I show you the technique using artist grade AND grade school paint and paper to show that you don’t need fancy art supplies to create lovely gifts that everyone will love receiving! This process does require a little bit of patience (waiting for paint to dry can be SO hard) and creativity (no two bookmarks can look alike-this is a crazy process!), but I so hope you will join me in finding patterns and beauty in your watercolor paint explorations today! Thanks for watching!💚

**A REMINDER: I’m always honest about the awesomeness (or lack thereof) of the art & coloring supplies I share about in my videos. I am not sponsored in any way and only take the time to create a new video for y’all because I’m personally excited about something new in the art world or new in my studio practice. Additionally, any links I share to supplies are Amazon affiliate links. Should you decide to bring home an art tool I’m talking about and purchase it through the links found here, a few pennies of that purchase are distributed to me. It isn’t much, but it (slowly) adds up, and it’s a lovely way to support the work I do and the content that I create. It comes at no cost to you, which is awesome, too. Thanks, in advance, to anyone who supports my art, my videos, and my writing in this way; I really appreciate it!!🤓

Definitely going have a go at this. I have tried it before, but I think I didn't leave the salt on long enough - too impatient, as usual! I like the way you did a little bit, then left it and came back to it. These bookmarks looked really special in the end. The moral of this story for me? Take your time!

Patience is SO hard in life, but even more so with art! When one sits down to be creative the last thing we want to do is wait!🙃 I’m notoriously impatient with watercolor, so how I plan for my impatience is to prep multiples of what I’m trying to do-notice how many bookmark patterns I had in the end? Six! While one was drying I got to keep painting by getting started on the next one:) Still, all needed to dry for a full day to really have the effect, BUT since I had done six instead of one my inner child (that’s always where I feel my impatience comes from) felt satisfied at pausing at the appropriate time. Thanks for watching, and I hope you have fun looking for your own patterns in watercolor!💚

Love that spacey looking one! Why does the salt do that to the colors?

It’s super interesting, right?! Salt drags the water towards it, absorbing it (just how salty food makes one thirsty, salt sucks up the water on wet watercolor paper), which is one reason why adding salt to wet watercolor paper & pigment makes patterns. The other thing is that salt interacts with different pigments uniquely, so some colors have very dramatic effects while other colors have minimal effects. What type and quality of paper you use also affects the patterning of this technique. The possibilities with this technique are truly infinite and fascinating, I think!🤓
