      Bryony Simpson if you find vids on UA-cam, the ages 11-12 are the ages when you get more injuries (found in a lot of vids). Or your either wearing the wrong shoes. If it’s your toes then wear extra protection and pads for it. These are just tips please don’t kill me 😅

    Beginners, please do not attempt to break in your first pair of shoes before the first class! You want the shoe to be completely raw for the very first lesson so that the teacher can see how they look on you before you do anything to them.
    Good luck and stay safe xx

    I used to love crushing my new shoes. I only started ballet at 24 years old, so I had a late start. That did not stop me from doing what I could. I would never get to be professional level, but I did dance on my toes, and mostly developed my arch. I was a school teacher and would perform for my students once a year; they loved it. I did teach a small group of girls that were ready for pointe work, even though they started in soft shoes in 1st and 2nd grade. When they were 12 or 13 I had to round up old shoes that would fit most of them. They were like me; grew up in a poor area and could not afford lessons or shoes. They were glad for hand me downs, and still mention being in my dance class even though they are grown now.

      Could you please let me know if it was harder to learn ballet since you were older than others to start ballet? I'm 13 and I really want to learn ballet, but I'm kind of scared to have to train with people younger than me. I don't want to get to a professional level, but I do want to learn the basics at least. How many hours did you train? Did you get to spend extra time in the studio to practice? It would be wonderful if you could reply to this. I would really appreciate it.:)

      @@sameensuhaib648 You'll find that even if you start with younger people, you will move up way quicker than them, especially if you put in a little extra work. Once you get the basics you will start to move really fast!

    If you're going en pointe for the first time and you've just gotten your pointe shoes please please don't do this. It's is important for a beginner to let your feet break the shoes in naturally. What Claudia is doing is strictly for a professional level once you've been working in the shoes for a while. By doing this you won't be building the muscle or strengthening your feet. Please don't do this unless you've been told by your teacher and especially if you're on your very first pair.

    I'm not a dancer but I find these things incredibly interesting,so with that being said,why do the shoes come so stiff/hard?

    • @catzkeet4860
      @catzkeet4860 5 років тому +49

      Katarina Ortiz they don’t necessarily. The shank of a shoe comes in varying stiffness, and it depends on the preference of the dancer. Many need a fair bit of stiffness BUT also need the shank to give more easily at a certain point, hence “breaking” the shoe. This is something a dancer learns with experience and is individual to her and her foot.

    • @whatlenalikes1674
      @whatlenalikes1674 5 років тому +33

      Also, depending on the style of shoe, the shank comes in a certain shape. It's important for the shank to eventually mold a little more to the dancer's arch so that they have more support. Since every dancer's foot shape is slightly different, there's never going to be a perfectly shaped shank. If the shank starts relatively stiff, it can be changed to fit the dancer, rather than the dancer changing her style/technique to fit the shoe.

    • @johndobson5635

      Katarina Ortiz because I guess that means that you can break it in to your liking

    • @megan.s.greenberg951
      @megan.s.greenberg951 5 років тому +11

      while the other things mentioned are correct, it also is very important that the arch of the foot and the ankle are well supported. this means they have to be stiff to support the dancers foot. when a pointe shoe is deemed "dead" (dead means it is unsafe to use anymore), it is mainly because the box and/or the shank got too soft to support the dancers weight correctly and safely.

    I've already tested a product like the orthotics. It's american and it's called Perfect fit pointe shoe inserts. They are just the same and are really good, the only "bad" thing is that you have to mold a new pair of inserts everytime you change pointe shoe (brand, or simply the shape of the box, because it's molded to your foot according to the type of pointe shoe you wear)

    It is so interesting how the preparations can vary person to person. I never step on my shoes, I need as high crown as I can possibly get. Also I never needed to break in the arch other that to do a few exercises in the shoes (I like having quite hard shank). But the demi-pointe bending is very important step I think.

    I bought something similar to your EPOs called perfect pointe and they also relieved me completely from big toe pain. I do have a question, though... would you recommend them for pointe beginners? Do you feel that by making it easier it takes away the strength factor a beginner needs to develop in order to be able to dance en pointe and not get injured? I showed them to my teacher and she’s also curious about this. I believe this is sort of a new technology that should help prevent injury yet I’m not completely sure how.

    • @kailajo1322
      @kailajo1322 6 років тому +20

      Aly Cross I’m also a beginner on pointe(but a long time dancer) and have wanted to try these toe pads as well. I don’t necessarily think they would take away from the strengthening aspect of pointe work, your feet are still moving as they would and working as they would. The way I’ve heard these custom pads explained is that they distribute the pressure from your body weight more evenly across your metatarsals and toes, so you don’t get those pressure points which cause pain. I think as far as strengthening it wouldn’t hold you back any, but it may take a bit to get used to the feeling.
      I’m curious as to what foot type you have, I have Egyptian, pretty tapered toes with very wide metatarsals and and curious if I would get the same great results

    • @alycross3749
      @alycross3749 6 років тому +7

      Kaila Jo that’s so interesting! I also have Egyptian feet, tapered toes and wide metatarsals (mostly because of bunions) BUT my feet are highly compressible so when I go up en pointe I sink so much on my big toe that it’s impossible for me to not use any padding (before perfect pointe I wore single-toe silicone covers yet they took up some space and my shoes always seem to feel short) and I’ve been wearing Gaynor Mindens! I tried regular pointe shoes and not using padding was impossible but I couldn’t feel the floor 🤦🏽‍♀️ it’s a pain... I’m a street size 7 and I’m wearing an 8.5 (tapered box, high vamp because by big toe is quite long, extra flex shank and high heel)
      I’ve also been told that Gaynors should be worn alternating with regular pointe shoes because they “help” a bit, yet I’m not sure if that’s true about the softer shanks. I’m going to get fitted for Blochs in about a month and see how that goes with the perfect pointe inserts which feel almost like heaven, hehe! I would also like to try these EPOs, though... hope they have them in the US!

    • @kailajo1322
      @kailajo1322 6 років тому +4

It doesn't interfere at all and you still have to build your strength. I will never ever go on pointe without them. For those en pointe... would you recommend the stretchy ribbon or the normal ribbon? (First pair of pointe shoes!!)

    • @paigeberzinski3320
      @paigeberzinski3320 5 років тому +2

      Sydney personally I prefer the normal ribbon because I think its easier to untie when you take your shoes off. Especially if you have quick changes from pointe shoes to other shoes! However I know a bunch of girls at my studio prefer the stretchy ribbons! It’s totally preference! Good luck with your first pair! (ps don’t break in your first pair of shoes like this video. break them in naturally in class to strengthen your arch and feet muscles! unless your teacher tells you otherwise!) :)

    I was wondering... how long do ur Ppointe shoes lasts when u do all of this stuff to them? I ask bcs i like a hard shank (I use La Carlotta hard, from Repetto), and I have to buy a new one every month (I'm not a pro... have classes 4-5 days/week).
    Love ur channel, it's very helpful! Kisses from Brazil. Bianca. 😘

      Arvilyn Nicerio honey I started at 17 and at 19 I got my first pointe shoes. It’s not too late, there are even people who’ve started in their 30’s. Find a studio with a beginner teens class if you can. Or talk with a studio about your options
      Once you’ve got a studio all you need is hard work and dedication

    • @catzkeet4860

      Because someone else would break their shoes differently. Every dancer does this differently, because every dancer has different feet, moves differently and has different requirements.
