@@JohnLnyc Hello JohnLnyc, You get no argument here! In fact, I totally agree...I was shocked to find that years later Frosty played drums for the Texas band, Soul Hat. If your not familiar with them, They are worth looking up. Their C.D. entitled....Good To Be Gone is a power house of Rock!! I've always have loved his drum solo on Lee Micheal's third album recorded live in the studio on the cut "Tell Me How Do You Feel". R.I.P. Frosty. Peace.
I feel blessed to have seen Frosty many times in Austin. More than once I heard people in line to get in club saying "is there 2 drummers tonight?" He could do a snare roll with his left hand (only) faster than most with two hands. Pro drummers still went to him for lessons.
Lee Michaels, he's just too much. He got me & my friends through those difficult late 1960s & I thank you Lee for that. I can picture us sittin' 'round my Mom's old entertainment thingy (you know with a TV, LP player & radio, big thing!) OR we'd do the big time & go over Julius' & listen to his record player with our head squeezed between 2 speakers. How COOL, we made our own head phones in a way. It was awesome!
I saw Lee and Frosty at an outdoor show with top billing in 1971. Several bands played during the day in good weather but by the evening it was pouring rain. They flew them both in on a helicopter and Lee and Frosty played for almost two hours with canvas tarps around them in the pouring rain. They had great talent and my deepest respect. Great Show SLC, utah
I saw these two play at my high school about 1968. When I met Lee Michaels about 20 years later at Prune Music in Mill Valley California, I told him that I saw him at my high school and he said, 'That was Palisades High School in Pacific Palisades California'. I said "how could you possibly remember that gig' and he said 'it's the only high school I ever played at.' It was an amazing performance and a great high school to go to.
Lee Micaels now has a podcast..look for episode 38 he tells you how he got eh big sound, and it was actually not a B3 but a Hammond model A, highly modified to go an octave lower and added percussion...he finally sets it straight how it was so big a sound lee michaels podcast episode 38
Every time I watch this I still can't believe I actually got to meet my all time favorite musician in the whole world...Mr. Lee Michaels! WOOO Help me!!
About 1970, USIU on Point Loma, San Diego. Lee Michaels and Frosty, Buddy Miles Express, Steve Miller One of the best concerts ever, lord of dope, sitting on the floor. Still remember Frosty drum solo, then he threw the sticks and played with bare hands. For the encore all three groups came on stage and jammed. That’s how I remember it going down in my altered state of mind.
I was there, too. Sure wish I could remember more of it ;~) but I know I had a great time and was witnessing some world-class music. Ah, those were indeed the days, were they not??
Lee Michaels always was and always is incredible. With Frosty he was amazing. I felt so lucky to see them in person. Rock on Lee, I hope you are happy and still making music. . .Thanks. All the Best, Chance Studio West
Lee Micheal's really was an incredible performer! I miss his energy on stage! And as for his music, no one could do it better! Do you know what I mean?
I too wish there were more videos. Saw this man for the first time circa 1970, as the opening act for Creedence Clearwater. I had never heard of him - he and Frosty blew the roof off the arena. The concert that followed Lee's performance was definitely anticlimactic, and I've been in awe of Lee's music ever since.
Saw them for the first time at Atlanta Pop Festival when they played after Hendrix. They sounded huge. Sad to hear of Frost's passing. Lee and Frosty had their stuff really tight and made a two piece sound so big. I always loved the sound of Lee's Hammond and Leslie.
Damn! I listen to a lot of newer bands out today from indie to alternative and when I see this all I can say is, "Music today holds no candle to stuff like this"! I actually feel blown away by this performance.
Saw Lee Michaels many times back in the late 60's. I recall a concert in Fresno, Ca. The crowd in anticipation was of course crowed up to the stage. Lee hit the opening chord of Stormy Monday and the first 3 rows moved back. Wow, that Hammond organ with that Lessie speaker.
Happy Birthday Lee Michaels born on November 24, 1945. He is an American rock musician who sings and accompanies himself on organ, piano, or guitar. He is best known for his powerful soulful voice and his energetic virtuosity on the Hammond organ, peaking in 1971 with his Top 10 pop hit single, "Do You Know What I Mean". - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Michaels
DAMN!!! I'd never heard of Lee Michaels until literally about 50 seconds ago while reading on Wikipedia, that he opened for Cream in Philly on their "Farewell" tour...I learned from Wiki, that Lee Michaels was a prodigiously talented Hammond organist so my interest was peaked so I checked him out here. This is the first video that I chose to play....and WHAT a first video!!!! This song rocked!!
Such a pity videos of Lee are so rare. What an incredible performer. Saw him in '71, around Barrel time: still the concert I measure others by. He and that Hammond could scream the roof off a place!!
I've had the live record with Lee Michaels and Frosty for years but never got to see video until now. This is great, but the Hammond is a good deal cleaner sounding here than on the album where it's just terrifying. It's hard to believe two guys could make such a huge noise.
I saw Lee and Frosty several times, but the time I loved the best. Was in San Bernardino, Ca. I think it was at Mother Lizzards(damn 70's,and all those drugs)Frosty was playing galvanized trash cans, and the sound was incredible.
Missed this Live video of Lee and Frosty. Never have found a live version of the album LIVE. I saw Lee perform with Frosty several times, First in Hawaii opening for Jefferson Airplane, then two shows at the Whiskey, then opening for Iron Butterfly at the Hollywood Bowl and he pretty much blew them off the stage. Then shows in S.F. Was blown away when he dumped the Hammond and Frosty and his shows took a nosedive.
1 Hammond Organ is like 3 guitars : lead, rhythm, and bass ... ERGO Keyboard duos are light years above some Ne'er-Do-Well with a guitar who's otherwise not good enough to find a Bass Player
I was lucky to see Lee Michaels open for Led Zep's 1st show @ UCI back in the day , we had to sneak in . Glad we did , Lee Michaels and Frosty kicked ass . Came in to Hold onto Freedom , still fits today . Rebuke and reject the trump/putin / nunes / mcconnell Alliance
Me too! One time, Lee's Hammond organ was broken, so he used a piano. He was really frustrated, felt out of his "element" without the organ, and after a short set, he told the audience to "come back tomorrow night" (he'd have the organ running.) Still a great show, with the piano and Frosty. We saw him again at the Fillmore West - loudest show I ever went to. That's probably part of why I have hearing aids now!
@strobelightbeam It's the only one Ive been able to find. The only other one is him lip synching "Do you know what I mean", but it's a cool video too!!
Yes it's too bad there are not more vids of Lee...I read that there was a documentary about him and his cheetahs somewhere out there...I havent been able to find anything like that anywhere though :(
Are you a keyboard player? I have played left hand bass in several bands and he has a special little keyboard that he places on the lower manual to play bass. He transfers it to his piano when he is doing that.
I have a bootleg recording of Lee and Frosty from this era. You can hear Lee tell the audience that the show is being videotaped, wow! Now all we have to do is track it down, ha, yea, right! I traded my bootlleg of Lee and Keith Knudsen (deceased) for this guy's copy recorded in CA. You can download these boots on Sugarmegs.
