  • The MS2000 is an interesting synth with equally interesting sounds. It was used heavily for te soundtrack to Metroid Prime, and isn't that neat? In this video, we'll discuss the MS2000 and explore its sounds. Thanks so much for joining me! And if you want to hear more, SynaMax has an excellent video showing recreations of these patches on the MicroKorg, and they show the names of the patches that were used on the MS2000: • 14 More Synth Patches ...

    I'm a fool for not specifically stating this in the video, but the Silk Pad, Lazy Pitch, Ice Field, and Turn Wheel presets were all used in the Metroid Prime soundtrack! SynaMax has an excellent video showing recreations of these patches on the MicroKorg, and they show the names of the patches that were used on the MS2000: ua-cam.com/video/1InzGMbCERo/v-deo.html

      Great video, dude! I hope to own an MS2000 someday but for now I'm happy with the microkorg. Regardless, it's awesome to get an in depth look at this. Also, thanks for the link and shout out!

      I have an MS2000 in my basement that I bought during college. I think it needs a new DSP chip!

    I love Korg and Metroid Prime but had no idea they were tied together like this. Fascinating!

      Thank you! Korg have a lot of great devices. I think they also used a Roland Sound Canvas for some of the sampled instrument sounds. The backgrounds and writing processes for soundtracks really are neat.

    Uhm.... there is a difference in the mod sequencers between the ms2000 and microkorg as well.

    Also DWGS even though I don't know what the acronym stands for, are the waveforms from the Korg DW6000 / Korg DW8000 synthesizers (close to 100% sure)

    With a 20+ year old synth that is all over youtube playing presets is kinda worthless.

    Cool Josh! Look forward to hearing more from this blue beast! What are the diagrams and all the text on the left and right sides of the face? And I can't recall, does this thing let you record sequences?

    • @JoshIsMakingMusic
      @JoshIsMakingMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! And yep, it has a sequencer. The diagrams on the sides provide info about how the synthesis and effects and everything work together. It looks very cool but it's not necessary for operating the synth (thankfully, I get dizzy trying to read it).

    I own one of these too, bought it new back in the day. Last year Cuckoo sold some new sounds for the MicroKorg which can also be loaded onto this which I bought and replaced some of the presets with. I don’t have it setup currently as I don’t have space but you’ve inspired me to break it out again.

    I bought one new in 2000. They retailed for 1100- new back then. I got a deal on the floor model at 800. Now, here we are 23 years later - the MS2K is now considered “vintage” by some. They can be had all day long on eBay for anywhere between 500-600 (350 for the rack mount) Regardless, I have had mine ever since I bought it and I would never consider selling it. It is a hidden gem in the Virtual Analog category. Sounds very lush in its own right. Currently I am building a modular synthesizer setup that is based on the MS2K….just real analog! Thanks for posting this video. ….and you are correct, this will not sound like a classic moog. I own both a Mini and this, and can say I never use the Kong for any sound other than what the Korg can do on its own, not to mimic any of the classics synths.

    I have had this 2000 since 2001. It’s a great little synth, and I would recommend it to anyone, it’s reasonably priced on eBay, takes a little effort to learn how to operate it, but it’s worth it. It’s a fun Journey to go on.

    Josh you inspired me to get my ms2000 out of storage to fiddle with it. Unfortunately when I plugged it in I am not getting any sound out of it and I am trying to figure out what could possibly be going on. It was working fine the last time I had it connected so I'm perplexed. I tried to connect both headphones and a breakout cable to the back and no audio. I also tried using a different power supply and nada. Last time I had it out I was loading new sounds onto it so I was thinking that maybe I need to change some setting back but I'm pretty sure I played it afterwards. I'm perplexed and just wanted to ask before I crack it open to have a look inside, any thoughts as to why no sound?

    • @JoshIsMakingMusic
      @JoshIsMakingMusic  3 роки тому

      Oh no! I'm not a synthesizer repair technician or anything, but typically when I've got that happen, I try swapping out all the cables and everything before popping something open to make sure it's working alright. Sorry I can't offer more info. Good luck!
