    This was an excellent demonstration of how to turn your library into Colossus. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    Congratulations for this good advice. It is indeed very interesting to try to personalize (and why not try to surpass) the samples we have. The ideas of sound transformations are absolutely creative and can take us very far indeed. Originality and creativity are then the real compasses!

    Thanks for sharing, I honestly think the same in terms of sound design, as I'm very focused on mixing and sound designing. I feel like the Albion Colossus is like a pre-made soup (again, interns of mixing and sound designing) rather than an ingredient for you to mix and create your mixed version. After watching this video of yours I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this way, now I can save the money to buy something else that benefits my need for the longer run. Thanks again!

      Thanks Hung, and great analogy, it definitely feels like a pre-made soup that you could totally make from scratch yourself if you wanted. It won't be exactly the same soup, but you may end up liking it even more.

    Every sample and library is meant to be used and abused to suit our purpose. I'm at my best when I'm mangling and repurposing a great sounding sample to make it my own. Great post!

    Thank you for this great demonstration. Indirectly you helped me with another purchase decision I stood in front of, because I thought I couldn't make BBCSO Pro sound so tight and modern and thought I needed a library like Nucleus from Audio Imperia to get this cinematic sound. But with your help I now know how to build not only a better version of Colossus but also of Nucleus with a bit of sound design.

      @@StephenOConnellCmdShiftNew May I ask, if you could recommend some plugins with which I could achieve the sound I described with BBCSO? You used "Punish" you said but I wonder, if there might be better saturators for this aproach. When I looked for comparisons I only found examples where people show saturators on pop music but not on orchestras so it's hard to get an overview.

    • @StephenOConnellCmdShiftNew
      @StephenOConnellCmdShiftNew  Рік тому

      @@niclasnightflame Hey, great question. That happens so often, you look at plugin demos and it rarely demos anything on strings for example haha. I used Punish because it is pretty mild and transparent before the final push, which makes it play nicer with the more acoustic and natural sounds of the orchestra. I do have a range of other saturators, like Coldfire and Culture Vulture plugins from Arturia, the Abbey Road saturator from waves, etc, but I find these work best when I am actually working on a rock or pop track. For orchestra, I find preamp channel strips offer the best tone. They offer subtle saturation that creates warmth, while still allowing them to breathe. There are so many to choose from, Waves, Arturia, for example, but anything that is marketed as a "channel strip" will be what you are looking for. Some of the Softube and Universal Audio ones are really nice, though expensive, and the Waves ones offer cheaper alternatives. Otherwise, Tape saturators can also be a great option. Waves Factory have a great cassette one, the Abbey Road J37 tape machine is also really nice, and loads more from other companies, like Baby Audio. All in all though, that is what I'd be looking for when it comes to the orchestra, mild saturation from channel strips or tape. Hope this helps!

    I lamented when I missed the Colossus introductory sale of $100 off (22%). But now at the time of this writing, it's an enticing $180 off (40%). I'm going to make the leap for that quick dial in capability that it affords. HOWEVER, I will supplement or bypass it as necessary with the excellent sound design tips expressed here. ...
    A no-brainer, and this is probably what Stephen was implying, but I thought I'd share anyway: Rather than using automation lanes to create specially crafted "Faux Colossus" tracks each time I need them, I'll use the multi-instrument feature of Kontakt, Falcon, etc., to build a Faux Colossus master template, with all of the desired effects pre-configured in a "default" state, with CCs assigned as necessary for the various instrument and effect fades and crossfades. Then for each pair (or multi) of sounds (like small to large orchestra), I'll create my Faux Colossus presets by swapping out instruments of the master template and saving the configuration as a new preset.
    This can also be done with DAWs. For example, with Reaper, I'll use its facility of Track Templates (containing a group of empty tracks): I'll create a Master Faux Colossus Track Template (containing a group of empty tracks) in Reaper, with all the desired effects pre-configured in a "default" state, and here again with CCs assigned as necessary for the various crossfades. Then for each pair (or multi) of sounds (like small to large orchestra), I'll use the Master track template to build my Faux Colossus presets.

    Well, this is an absolutely awesome video !
    I like the idea of the « big » sound of Colossus, but something about it turns me off. Not so much the price as the fact that it’s a CPU/memory hog, and it would greatly impact my workflow. Spitfire’s library are usually incredibly well optimized, but they made some weird choices with this one…
    Definitely going to try this with Albion One !

    On a related subject, I was wondering if it is feasible to take a sample library of a single instrument, or a small ensemble, and make it sound like a bigger group, by making copies of the part, and applying a small amount of delay like pre-delay on to each copy maybe 2 to 5 ms. almost on the lines of sun records slap back echo in the 1950s. With making five copies with a slight delay would a 50 piece orchestra sound like a 250 piece?

    • @HyperNova137
      @HyperNova137 Рік тому

      I'm a total noob and not the most qualified person to answer this, but I would probably recommend making a few other very minor alterations, based on what common sense would tell you to expect from a separate instrument section: Adjust the pitch by a VERY tiny amount (like only a few cents), use a slightly different panning position, maybe EQ the high end a bit to give the impression of being further back or closer up in the mix (or use the mic placement mix controls, if ya got em), etc. I recently purchased Pacific Strings from Performance Samples, and someone suggested a similar trick to deal with the fact that the library doesn't have a 2nd violins section; He simply altered the 1st violins patch using the methods I mentioned, and it works like a charm.
      I probably wouldn't even use that delay trick, unless you try it and think it sounds good... To my thinking, that would probably just make it sound thicker, or slightly more stereo -- but ultimately, all that matters is if it sounds good to you. The best way to find out what works for your own unique needs is to experiment!

      Hey Peter, great question and Synchromystic Media has also shared some great points on this topic. The challenge when trying to increase the sound of the library is that if we just double the parts, it would simply amplify what is already there, because everything is played exactly the same. You could use the Haas stereo technique to widen the sound, duplicating the tracks and setting one between 10-30ms delayed, but that would just adjust the stereo width, rather than the feeling of getting more players in the room. I kind of think of it the same way vocalists in pop tracks approach "gang vocals" or group vocal sections. They sing a couple close to the mic, a couple further away, a couple with their nose pinched, a couple whispered, etc. Every time the timbre is changed. Pitch variations could help, adjusting the velocity (to mimic that "whisper" technique), these could help. Though, if you really want the feeling of more players in the room, I find nothing beats combining libraries. I often combine two or more libraries of the same instrument or section, giving it a different feeling all together. For example, BBCSO and Novo Strings together creates a more full and airier sound than just one of them by themselves. I also often add 8dio's intimate strings to more full libraries, which gives the attack more bit than they would have had. See what you have on hand or which free libraries out there you can get and try and combine these to thicken the texture. It's like recording guitar double tracks, nothing beats having two different guitars and recordings rather than duplicating the same guitar line.

    The free bbc discover has got some strange release samples and reverb effects going on. I tried it the other day. The trumpet is the worst but some of the individual notes on all the instruments have different things going on which make it pretty much unusable. Its an odd choice for spitfire to use as a showcase for their larger libraries. It rather puts doubts into the full products quality rather than making me want to but them. The release samples or the effects that are going on sound as if they are from different instruments or different articulations.

    you're absolutely spot on Stephen,these all sound changing central knobs are just gimics,a gimic wich you can make yourself as you have shown,i dont know if your DAW can do this,but fl studio can create a macro knob to control all these effects,so it would be the same like spitfire's central knob,dont have spitfire libraries,only kontakt libraries (cinesamples,the orchestra,etc) and VSL base libraries (andromeda) and solo strings (tableau) from orchestral tools,i think i have enough libraries (that do mostly the same thing) for now 😁
    and like you said,you can change the sound,character,timbre,etc with effects,to make it more punchy,i would use a compressor like OTT
    cheers mate

      Hey, someone else did also mention this as well and I think it might have something to do with other BBC versions. I own the BBCSO Pro, so I think when I switch it back to the "discover" version, it has a couple of extra articulations. Which is strange, the whole idea of switching versions was to be able to share your sessions with others who didn't have the paid version, but I'm not sure 🤷‍♂️

      @@StephenOConnellCmdShiftNew @Stephen O'Connell - Cmd Shift New I was told that when you own a higher version and switch to lower one , some articulations only the high version has would be 'translated' (with lower samples) I think that was just a 'mark' , in order to make session project or someone got multiple devices
