"Out for a walk...bitch" is absolutely iconic. Probably top 10 lines in the entire Buffyverse in my opinion. I love the ending scenes too as it finally explains who Dawn is. One of my favorite episodes, was looking forward to this. The enormity of what was done to Buffy and Joyce, to all of them, with this can't be overstated even knowing none of what comes after. And it always felt almost like the monk was *gloating* when he said "you cannot abandon"... because even at the end of the episode, you can tell that knowing the truth doesn't change the fact that Buffy *feels* like she is her baby sister.
I feel like it is more relief than gloating, since protecting the Key from the Beast is so important. He was relieved to see that Buffy felt loving and protective of Dawn, because that way he knew that she would do whatever she could to protect the Key.
I honestly think the scene with Buffy under the spell, seeing the pictures of Dawn faded in and out is one of the most atmospheric, brilliantly executed and haunting moments of the entire show. They did it so well. As someone who really didn't mind Dawn at all, I wish they'd kept up the ruse for much much longer.
[STARS]TyranT I think this was long enough. I didn’t watch the show when it was on, but I don’t think I would even have liked the 4-5 weeks of total confusion over Dawn. I 100% agree about that spell scene, though. It was very well done.
Great, underated performance by MT this episode. Her 'do you think I care your the slayer...' speech really could be either a threat from a villainous entity or a scared and angry teenage girl lashing out.
Qualimar That line was very good, yes (though it’s “you’re the Slayer”, not “your”). The scene where she offers Joyce tea seemed unreasonably creepy to me knowing that Dawn is, in her mind, a normal girl.
Adam Abrams Well, she was threatened by an angry slayer. So as she’s thinking “I don’t care what you say, I’m taking care of mom,” subconsciously she might be worried.
it's incredible that you have reached this point without hating Riley. Which makes you the first reactor to understand many things that happen to Riley, simply because you're not blinded by hatred of him. At this point many people see him boring, but it is only because they do not see everything that happens more than anything because they hate him and are not interested in knowing what happens to him, if you see it neutral as I saw it, I understood his history and I am interested all his path. Thats why i suscribe right now. :)
I’m liking Riley more this season where as I didn’t like him in season 4. I don’t know if it’s because he had too much screen time and felt out of place with it.. but he seems toned down in S5.
I love this episode, it's got drama, humor, plot progression and a string of very memorable scenes. I've watched Shannan's reaction about 20 times (after skipping the 9 min. no-spoiler rant). The acting by the guy playing the monk was excellent and the introduction of The Beast is fascinating. Best Buffy season.

Buffy stepping into the older sister role in the last scene is a great moment. Thank you for making the realization that Dawn is meant to be written as an annoying character. Way too many fans hated and disliked her for acting the age she was meant to be portrayed as when this initially came out.
Well, he probably hasn't done the Buffy stalk as long as Angel has BUT since day one, when he first "crashed" to Sunnydale, he did the whole Buffy stalk thing much like Angel... which is ironic when you look back at "School Hard" and this episode, you'd never imagine that he'd try to come up with this pathetic yet endearing and hilarious excuse for stalking her...
@@RitsychServare With Spike it seems to be more of an on and off situation. This one seems more like Angel as its the first time since not trying to kill Buffy.
You mean when Angel "stalked" Buffy because he was told it was his destiny to help her? Angel and Spike are completely different. Angelus stalking Buffy however is more in line with Spike's stalking.
@@DanY-gx2dv SPOILERS FOR AtS S5 No, I mean when Angel at the beginning of _When She Was Bad_ watched her sleep and she woke up and saw him standing there for who knows how long. I mean watching her when she isn't on patrol in The Bronze in numerous episodes only to disappear when she looked up, purposely hiding himself instead of showing her he is keeping an eye on her even when there is no danger around. I mean in Angel S5 having people he asked to follow her report back to him so he can keep an eye on her despite the fact that he abandoned his "Whistler asked destiny" of helping Buffy for his actual destiny of helping people himself in LA. I mean the Scoobies calling him out on how stupid it was to do so in _Pangs_ when he should of just told Buffy he was back, which is what he should have done with his "Whistler destiny stalking" so he wouldn't have to stalk her to begin with. I am talking about the fact that even though Buffy found him attractive, his stalking (even as it was on Whistler's behest) had Buffy creeped out enough to kick him in the back of the head and tell Giles she disliked him. I am talking about the fact that he continues to stalk her anyway even after he has a perfectly valid reason to be at her side from the episode of _Angel_ onward. Not even Whistler gave Angel a decent reason for Buffy not knowing Angel was "looking out for her" the way he was doing so. All he had to do was tell her he was keeping an eye on her and/or walk next to her during patrols and it wouldn't be stalking. Because he didn't do so, it's considered stalking. If you don't want to believe that is what he did, that is fine, but I do.
Buffy8Fan 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m so glad someone finally pointed this out! I can’t stand the fact that both Angel and Spike stalk Buffy, but Angel was by far the worst of the two for it.
The hurt on dawn's face in the final scene working thru her anger...cos oh boy that you're not my sister line is painful to watch when you think about it from dawn's perspective and after we find out what the monks did.
Loved hearing you working things out and theorizing during the post-review. Season 5 is such a well-executed and GRIPPING season with how it set up its mysteries and pays off. When it answers questions, it only raises more questions, and there's such a great build-up throughout. So much happens during this season and I can't wait to watch the rest of your reactions!
I love how after this episode you just get Dawn now and you don't seem to judge her as harsh as other people from episode 2 to now. That's why you are my favorite
Yes! It only makes sense that Dawn is "annoying" because the show is from Buffy's viewpoint and we mainly see how she has to deal with Dawn. But I totally am sympathetic to Dawn and to me she is one of the few realistic and honest depictions of a child on TV.
One of my favourites episodes! We finally know what’s up with Dawn suddenly being there, Giles and the Magic Shop, we’re introduced to a new bad guy and that last scene is just really sweet.
And so the truth about Dawn has been revealed, and with not a few surprises. Well done to them to make us doubt that she was, in some way, responsible for the disease that struck Joyce, but in the end we too were, as were Buffy and friends, victims of a great deception .... although supported by solid reasons. Who will ever be this "super powerful demonic woman", this Beast? Why does she want the Key, alias Dawn? Certainly she has proved capable of defeating Buffy without difficulty, but also victim of the classic defect of other super-villains, excesses of arrogance, but given her strength it will not be enough to bet on those to win. This 5th season has given a beauty, indeed beautiful, turn to the plot, with many mysteries revealed but even more to be discovered :) Now Liam can say that he did a "Try to not laugh challenge" with Buffy LOL (Giles is always a myth) Ps: Spike is becoming like Angelus in season 2, true with less wicked but equally disturbing motivations. What can be worse between a villain who wants to kill you and someone who loves you?
Your unending compassion for riley, and ability to shed light on his character/struggles with identity has actually softened my attitude towards him a little. That doesn't sound like much on paper, but I have hated that guy for a solid 20 years. So it's monumental in my book! Really enjoying your buffy/angel reactions, can't wait for the next one!
Great writing by Douglas Petrie: "we agree to take care of each other", "what are you doing? my boyfriend" "five words or less". Such a great "key" episode. Amazing performance by Claire (the La-Dee In Re...d).
< insert The Dark Knight's Ledger-Joker quote:" Here we go..." > Such a fantastic episode filled with so much goodness. Glad Joss made you wait this long for an explanation for Dawn. As for the monster in the red dress, you're going to have to wait and see.
I'm soooo ready for you to get into this season! My favourite overall season, closely followed by 6. This is indeed the best episode of the season thus far. So buckle up, cos the ride has just started. Spike and his ICONIC "out. for. a. walk... bitch" 👏❤😄 probably my favourite BTVS quote ever I love how you go to the core emotions rather than just focus on the general behaviour. I truly enjoy your analysis. I don't particularly like Riley, but I do understand his POV. Same with dawn. Yes. She's whiny and annoying, but she's the epitome of every teenage girl at that age. Myself included, and I was her age when I watched it, so I could relate to her. Maybe why I love the character so much. I'll stop writing my novel now. And I never really liked you anyway. And you have stupid hair.... 😉😄
I really enjoy your insight to these characters and the way you react to their personal story arcs. I've recently binged through your vids and caught up. I have to really try to like Dawn most of the time, and she doesn't make it easy, LOL. To be fair, I didn't like teenage girls when I was one, and she is such a bratty teenager. Love this season though. Subscribed
Bittersweet SummerChild I like the interpretation that S5 Dawn is what a group of monks *think* that a teenage girl should be like. So she is really annoying, but for a reason.
There are so many amazing character moments in this episode. I love almost all the characters in this episode. While this is appreciated episode, I still think it's under appreciated. It's not perfect or in the top lists, but it's still masterpiece. And I also really appreciate Dawn in certain scenes, the last scene with Buffy is especially awesome where both Dawn and Buffy transfer many subtle feelings in so masterful way, at least if we take Dawn's age into account.
Me and my sister are about the age gap of Buffy and Dawn.. same when the show came out.. Dawn irritated the hell out out of me.. but my sister was like well they are completely accurate lol 🤣🤭💁🏽♀️
Exposition monk and the Beast are a lot of fun. I really love when the Monk says “she doesn’t know”, to me he has a wistful, very sympathetic sad smile. While he is dying, his body smashed. Lovely performance. And the Beast kinda reminds me of the Mayor, in that her actions and her demeanour are so at odds.
lawrencegough One thing (among many) that I love about BtVS is how different the a Big Bads are from each other. Having said that, I do think the Mayor and the woman from this episode are the most similar among them. Near-invulnerability and a totally casual demeanor while inflicting terrible pain on others.
Adam Abrams it’s very effective to have polite villains, you get this shocking contrast which is much more impactful than pure evil. Even the Master, Angelus and Adam fit that mould too. However, I do agree that the show has a pretty diverse selection of antagonists.
I've always really enjoyed this episode, it's fantastic. Spike is SUCH a teenage boy with a crush, and it's adorable. "Out for a walk, bitch" and "And you have stupid hair!" are some of my favorite Spike moments XD YAY, for finally learning what Dawn is after 5 episodes! Can't wait for you to see more of "the beast"!
@@jhschmidMD4 Can you blame her? 🙄 Whoever wrote this episode sure catered to the fangirls/fanboys who wished that Spike had more screen time… and look what the writers did then.
I have seen all of these on Patreon. It would be a shame if the UA-cam Algorithm missed out... Going through all of these videos makes me realize how many hours of entertainment you have provided to me. Thank you again Liam. Well deserved success and long may it continue. Love seeing the excitement in your intro keep up for years despite all of the ups and downs.
Actually, I _liked_ Giles's wizard hat. I thought it was cute, and would have been a hit with the rest of the Scoobies and all the customers. Buffy was just a spoilsport.
The best thing joss did was not change Buffy's personality, she still has the defect that only children have, even though she now has a sister. Her worst defects come from being a single daughter: she has been spoiled kid, jealous and capricious girl. Which was reflected when faith appeared, which was one of the reasons that was pushed to the dark side (faith have responsability too but, buffy and the scooby gang help to take that path)
Wow, as an only child, thanks. I relate to Buffy a lot, all four in fact, I'm from UK like Giles, I can relate to Xander a lot, plus lots in common with Willow (you know, like computers, like teaching, like girls).
You really have it in for only children, don't you? What did an only child do to you? Do you have an ex who was an only child? You're not even making sense with the "jealous" part. Why would an only child be more jealous than others? On the contrary, it's usually those with siblings that are prone to jealousy and insecurity. We only children never had to compete for attention and had no reasons to feel insecure.
I love how Buffy doesn't have to say a word in Giles knows exactly what she's thinking. Not sure what to think of red dress beast woman. On the one hand, Joss doesn't discriminate, on the other, this is another sign of his relationship fears I think. I saw this with a friend and he's like "she's like my ex." Honestly he's dated really crazy people so I was also thinking it. Then I thought. Season 2 evil ex boyfriend, season 3 evil dad, season 4 was supposed to be evil mom before he lost the actress and now season 5: she has a serious evil ex girlfriend feel. Too it off with so many destroyed relationships already in the show and this is a psychology course waiting to be written. True for all writers, but fun. Dawn: me as a teen, how embarrassing. ☺️ I'm so proud of Anya. Dear mods: I think it was obvious enough to post my analysis but if I am wrong at all, please tell me quickly so I can copy and paste on the episode you deem appropriate and remove it? Thank you for all your hard work.
Interesting theories or allusions o whatever lol what about season 1 big bad? Evil childhood monster behind the closet or wild imagination came to life? lol
@@RitsychServare Still not sure myself. But that's a good thought. Season 1 always felt like a simple homage to monster movies of old, flipped on its head of course. Could be as simple as that, could be your theory, although it would be kind of funny if it were grandpa, but that last is definitely a stretch.
A bit late to the dance so to speak... but one of the reasons the Dawn/Buffy relationship works so well is that it isn't that tremendously different from their real life relationship. They worked on the same soap opera together when Trachtenberg was very young and Sarah appointed herself Michelle's "unofficial" babysitter. When they were looking for someone to play the role of Dawn it was Sarah who put Michelle's name out there. They've stayed fairly close over the years as well.
This is a terrific episode & season 5 is def my favourite of the complete Buffy series. Look forward to seeing more reactions as the season progresses.
I love this episode. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's nice to get the reveal for Dawn. Season 5 is a great one. To be fair, every season of Buffy minus S1 is great. It truly is impossible to find fans who agree on their favorite season. That's part of what I love about it. I look forward to your future reactions.
The irritation from Buffy against Dawn also feels like she knows somethings off but can not put her finger on it. I also like the fact in one of the last episodes of the previous season she walks along the hallway and you see her look in to a storage room that turns out to be Dawn's room. Re-watch the series after your finished. You will see that there a lot of foreshadowing in the show. This season is one of the best.
3:23 😱 It's her!! "The evil b!tch queen from hell" that Professor Walsh was talking about! 😉 ok ok so she was really referring to herself but I just thought it would make a neat flashback to season 4. 😁The only one who can break down a wall or giant door in this case. This episode is the *starts singing* "start of something new...." lol 'New' as in character-wise, development, and plot hehe Anyway, that scene where Buffy walks into the Magic Shop and sees Giles wearing a wizard outfit is like something you could list in a Buffy Try-Not-To-Laugh Challenge Episode 😂 (that includes smiling/grinning lol) Same goes for Spike's "Out for a walk, b!tch." 😑😒😐🤦♀️ Oh and the big reveal. Holy 💩. yeah no seriously, so many great things happening here. Probably one of my favorites for this season. 👍
I liked Dawn the first time through the series, mainly cause I was like 8 and just related to her very strongly, being the youngest, being overlooked, but as you can see from my user name I've gotten past that. ;p And Glory, I love Glory, the beast which ever, she's fun to watch, she's attractive, she's funny and Minor Spoiler for any new viewers she is the greatest single threat that Buffy has ever faced. I mean season 7 you could easily argue that there is more danger but that's because of the numbers ya know?? I would like to mention a certain captain Reynolds here, but as that main contain spoilers for future viewers I will hold my tongue for now.
I saw this chapter when it went on the air, at that time there were not so many blogs, or places to comment what was happening in the series, there was no news and we were all without knowing what was going to happen. He made us wait more than a month to answer what was happening with dawn, in the previous chapter I had already tired of speculating and had already taken it as buffy always had a sister and thats it. nor expected an explanation.
Now this is the time to tell Liam about the cryptic messages in earlier episodes that contained the word "dawn" - which turned out to be the name Dawn. Now that Liam knows the truth about Dawn.
Your clip is missing the part where Dawn is fading in and out while telling Buffy why she entered her room. That's a much stronger effect than the family photo in the background. In fact all of you who do reviews on UA-cam watch episodes that are overly edited. To the point where all the important parts are cut out.

Next one! Next one! Next one!!
I have been patiently waiting for your reaction to this episode. This season is my most favorite of all.
This 5th season has given a beauty, indeed beautiful, turn to the plot, with many mysteries revealed but even more to be discovered :)
Now Liam can say that he did a "Try to not laugh challenge" with Buffy LOL (Giles is always a myth)
Ps: Spike is becoming like Angelus in season 2, true with less wicked but equally disturbing motivations. What can be worse between a villain who wants to kill you and someone who loves you?
6:52 -- "Out. For. A. Walk. ... Bitch" 🤙
Liam referring to Anya, former Vengeance Demon: “...she’s so wholesome.” 😂
Great writing by Douglas Petrie: "we agree to take care of each other", "what are you doing? my boyfriend" "five words or less". Such a great "key" episode. Amazing performance by Claire (the La-Dee In Re...d).
I read your last sentence with Bill Burr’s voice and cadence.
Loved that you cracked up after Out.For.A.Walk….Bitch. :) and I always love Spike's hand gesture after "bitch." So classic!
Wow your review was awesome, you're so smart for clicking all these things together already, i'm impressed. Also yeah.. what a great episode this is.
< insert The Dark Knight's Ledger-Joker quote:" Here we go..." > Such a fantastic episode filled with so much goodness. Glad Joss made you wait this long for an explanation for Dawn. As for the monster in the red dress, you're going to have to wait and see.
Buckle up Liam, this season will challenge everything you think you know aaaaaand that's all I'll say about that.
"You think know what's to come, what you are. But you haven't even begun."
Season 5 is, overall, kind of a masterpiece. Great story arc, but you'll see.
I'm soooo ready for you to get into this season! My favourite overall season, closely followed by 6.
This is indeed the best episode of the season thus far. So buckle up, cos the ride has just started.
Spike and his ICONIC "out. for. a. walk... bitch" 👏❤😄 probably my favourite BTVS quote ever
I love how you go to the core emotions rather than just focus on the general behaviour.
Season 6 can be hated but this the more audacious, no spoilers but never gonna be the same after this season and season 7 conclude well this show.
One of my personal favourite episodes. Been waiting so long for this!
I kind of have nothing to add to your analysis, it was fantastic!
Priceless reaction as well!
Thank you, Liam!!!
"Favorite of the season so far". ... Yeah. Let's see how that hold's up.
I guess it won't survive next episode... And next episode "favoriteness" may not survive episode 7
I seen all season 5 and it my favourite
@@emmabenson9572 Ya done seen alla five? 🤣
I had immense fun and so many good feelings watching your reaction and listening to your thoughts, thank you so much
Me and my sister are about the age gap of Buffy and Dawn.. same when the show came out.. Dawn irritated the hell out out of me.. but my sister was like well they are completely accurate lol 🤣🤭💁🏽♀️
Love that Season 5 is very enjoyable for you!
"Out for a walk, bitch" and "And you have stupid hair!" are some of my favorite Spike moments XD
YAY, for finally learning what Dawn is after 5 episodes! Can't wait for you to see more of "the beast"!
Don't forget the "I never liked you anyway" 😆
The length of time they allowed that joke to play out was amazing
Still my fav of the season. And after all of that, and they're still not sure about what is making her mom sick. :(
The best thing joss did was not change Buffy's personality, she still has the defect that only children have, even though she now has a sister.
Absolutely love this episode and I loved your reaction! The season is just getting started, loads of amazing episodes to come 😁
I love how Buffy doesn't have to say a word in Giles knows exactly what she's thinking.
“well thank you exposition monk” lmaoooo
This is a terrific episode & season 5 is def my favourite of the complete Buffy series.
Look forward to seeing more reactions as the season progresses.
I very much like this ep. Spike 's 5 words 🤣 really liking your reaction
Woo my favourite antagonist arrives (with the mayor a close second) glad you have enjoyed the series so far you will enjoy what is to come (:
The irritation from Buffy against Dawn also feels like she knows somethings off but can not put her finger on it. I also like the fact in one of the last episodes of the previous season she walks along the hallway and you see her look in to a storage room that turns out to be Dawn's room. Re-watch the series after your finished. You will see that there a lot of foreshadowing in the show. This season is one of the best.
Emma Cauldfield!! now i know why she looks familiar to me, she was the blind witch in OUAT.
"Out for a walk....bitch" 😂😂😂 i didn't remember that
"Be back before Dawn." ;)
...You rip a worm in half and you get two worms. Think that would work with you? Well, it worked with Xander.
Oh Dawnie 😄❤💜
Starting my day right ! Thank you!! 🙏❤️
I would say this is a seminal episode. Now would be a good time to revisit a favorite episode from season one to see how far we've come ...
2 in 1 day never been so lucky
Yesssss you got to this episode!
Yassss Buckle Up! 😭😭😭😭😭
You meant “evil bitch monster of death”.
I liked Dawn the first time through the series, mainly cause I was like 8 and just related to her very strongly, being the youngest, being overlooked, but as you can see from my user name I've gotten past that. ;p
And Glory, I love Glory, the beast which ever, she's fun to watch, she's attractive, she's funny and Minor Spoiler for any new viewers she is the greatest single threat that Buffy has ever faced. I mean season 7 you could easily argue that there is more danger but that's because of the numbers ya know??
I would like to mention a certain captain Reynolds here, but as that main contain spoilers for future viewers I will hold my tongue for now.
"Captain Cardboard" is note-perfect as a Riley descriptive, imho!
Captain Forehead
Captain Cardboard
Captain Peroxide
@@theadamabrams Ah yes, but... Only 'Captain Cardboard' flows from off the tongue with such an alliterative, tarty sting! 🤣
"Out for a walk ... bitch."
Did you already figure out that the season arc was taking shape, that the lady in the glorious red dress would be sort of the Big Bad of the season?
@@menachemsalomon from this i get 2 things, maybe the hardest ones, but the easy one i didnt see it.
So does Liam remember Dawn now?
Thank you, exposition monk
Where is episode 2 late to the party on this one I loved your walking dead reactions
Its because by law you can only include 10 minutes of footage on UA-cam, we watch the full episodes but can't show it all
Ship it 🧝🏻♀️🧛🏻
YEEEEES!
Sometimes you say stuff that's so insightful that it makes me wonder if you've actually seen the whole show already.
Majoofi Ditto, although sometimes Liam is super wrong, too, so it balances out :)
Isnt michelle georgeous?
Liam (or anyone else that knows) are your Buffy full reaction vids on Patreon one dollar a month?
