I'm a CFI and have been flying for 30 years. I have 5,000+ landings logged in all sorts of general aviation aircraft plus a number of military aircraft like T34's, AT-6's, PT-17's. I just could NOT get this landing thing down in the DCS F18. I wanted to configure gear/flaps for landing, set power, trim for airspeed and land....pretty much like I always do. Use of a Velocity Vector, AOA indicator, and EBar all while basically ignoring airspeed and power setting is just so damn alien to me and I really struggled with it. Finally today, I was able to actually land well thanks to your video!
About 25 years ago, I flew a Champ with heel brakes (rumor has it that Lindbergh logged time in that airplane!). Anyway, I struggled with the brakes big time. Finally I got it and the guy that checked me out told me that everyone that is a rated pilot and that is use to toe brakes struggles with heel brakes. New primary students get it just fine. It's kind of like this DCS F18 thing, I suppose :-) Anyway, good job on the video. Thanks!
Its more about being well versed with a computer than aircraft, Ive never flown a aircraft in my life I'm 20 years old and i started DCS like a little over 2 months ago and I've always been computer savvy. Ive learned the F16 first, F18 2 weeks later, A10C II 2 weeks after the F18, and just got the apache like a week ago. I learned them so quickly but I've always loved aviation ever since I first saw a airplane and its a dream come true to be able to fly them without actually flying them!
Taught by someone who actually flew fast jets … the more times I watch this video the more I learn. It’s the vid that keeps on giving 😂 Thanks Tim.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. The change in my landings before and directly after watching this video was absolutely night and day!
You're very welcome, anytime.
This is the first video that explains why I was struggling. Thank you!!!!!!
Thanks for the terrific technique tutorial Tim. One extra thing for viewers to note is that the landing pattern for US CVN aircraft carriers is only left hand circuits are performed because their decks are angled for this approach. While at the field the 'handedness' depends on wind direction.
Thanks, Staub - in the British military our circuit direction (closed pattern in American speak) is published as away from the most built up area and defined in the Station Orders. Which is good else we'd end up like Zoolander and could only turn to the right :)
This is the rock solid content that got me to subscribe over a year ago!
Legend!
When it comes to the velocity vector - my buddy gave me some really good advice. Put the thing on the thing. Works every time.
Perfect circuit. Nicely done as always.
This is an amazing video I never realized how much you control pitch with power on this thing. This is the best video I've seen for showing that.
Thank you, Calvin.
Thanks a lot for this wicked video man. I'm still a beginner in DCS the hornet is my first non-helicopter module, thanks to this I pulled off a pattern and landing on my first try (after watching it hahaha, there were a lot of bad one before). What helped me as well was practising what you show in the video for a bit by flying around in on-speed AOA just controlling the plane with the throttle and x axis stick movements without trying to land straight away til I had it down.
Great explanation, it helped me a lot. Thank you!
Seeing the controls overview (the red thingy in the left bottom corner) was also very useful.
Have been struggling with the balloon so really good to see your detailed explanation of when you start adding trim and power when the E bar starts to fall. I think this will help me get better at it in future. It's easy to re-compensate in a long straight in landing but no so much when flying the landing circuit.
You can stage flap also Lewis, take gear at 250, half flap at 220 ish and full flap at 180 ish and that helps.
nice! so trim for velocity vector relative to ebracket and speed for moving both together. really great and clear tutorial! makes it look easy!
“You will not get on to the boat without this”
That’s what I told my (then) 15yo “War Thunder” playing son who just said “nah gissa go”. I was prepared to be very smug until he trapped on his first go, dropped the mic & walked out like a boss. Oh to be young & already know how to do everything again!
Very Good video and points and yes I will be joining in the near future once I get everything established. You remind me of a flight instructor from yesteryears.
A great Video Tim very clear and concise as to how to land the Hornet using the E bracket. So simple and easy when you watch that vid and understand the use of throttle for getting the landing right rather than using pitch on the stick.
On a separate note it's been great to be flying with you and the guys on your Shadowlands server for the past 2 months. Your lessons are very clearly explained with accompaying documents for each stage of training so glad i found your Vids on youtube and the great community that exists on the shadowlands servers and discord. Don't stop doing what your doing.👍
Thank you, Nemesis - greatly appreciated.
Excellent. Well paced, informative and super helpful. Thanks.
Amazing video for me as a DCS newbie. It helped me so much to improve my approaches and mostly nail the landings.
Just started in DCS last week and man that pattern landing is really kicking my ass. It's amazing to see that keeping a level 1%G turn is possible and also the base turn of 30% as well. I keep bobbing up and down ;p The straight in VFR landing started to work better after some 6 tries when I started to feel the throttles better and having less ballooning but I still use numbers for reference. I only put flaps to full when at about 180 knots to prevent excessive ballooning.
Thanks Tim, great content and very well explained. Very helpful.
Omg finally someone explaining how it works on the 18. Been struggling
Thanks for the vid. Been struggling with landing and this helps
Awesome as ever FJP :D I really enjoy my flying and learning on the servers and the banter's kinda great too!!!
I am both surprised and also not surprised about the reds. I thought they were different but this is pretty much like many workplaces especially those that don't have "normal" routines/tasks and involve teams or groups. I was previously in a very different industry but a similar theme was present.
Very clean explaination
Best clear demonstration of using power for pitch I've seen. Thank you for that. I tend to lose focus on my power settings when I'm turning into final and come in too slow. I should do a lot more circuit practice.
well done Tim, sending to my mates
This vid helped me immensely! Thanks for the upload!
Great as always, thank you!
Gonna be studying THIS one closer for sure. NICE vid. WELL DONE!
Great video, I fly the old warbirds but your content always tempts me to get this newfangled jetty stuff.
Fantastic instruction - Brilliant👍
Great stuff. I wish I would have found you about a year ago. It would have saved me a ton of hassle lol
Love the vid.
That was great 🤙🏼
Hey Tim that's awesome, thanks for showing me how to land the hornet properly on Microsoft flight sim 2020!
Excellent content, I'll take all of your tips that you have time to publish.
Thank you,dude. U help me a lot!
Very helpful. Thanks!
Brilliant.
i knew i do it wrong, now i know why :)
Considering i don’t have a computer , I do find DCS fascinating . That was really cool, always wondered what some of the symbols were. I also watch a guy called Growling Sidewinder who does a lot of air to air, finally got my head around one circle and two circle, check him out if you’ve got five. Great stuff Tim …cheers.
Awesome, could you also do some more F16vids!
i've only been playing a few months but once i figured out pitching with the throttle i find the F18 the easiest to land on a runway.
Smoothly
Tim have you ever thought about doing something like this for the Air cadets alot squadrons use flight sims now as training aids videos like this would be a great teaching aid
I'd really like to hear more about the RAF people who have been training the Chinese.
Nice landing
I kind of cheat, throttle to idle, gear down, flaps full, ATC engage, place VV on target spot, light stick movements to keep it on target, hit deck, speed brake open and brakes below 80. Very seldom I don't land with ATC engaged.
It seems easy but is not. I’m still trying how to use the trim… 😢 how many times do I have to try for not to crash the aircraft?
How can you get this little red window in lower left side to see your speed vector ?Thx
Hey Sir that was a very enlightening tutorial. As soon as you said "If you're flying it like an F-16 or an F-5" a small light came on.
The rest was very informative. I just tried it and it worked, as expected, like a charm.
In 300 hrs I'll know enough to be dangerous. 🤣🤣🤣
Wow, that was cool. I’m now a better simmer.
Great video. Just an fyi, it’s called an E bracket, not an E-Bar. Keep the great content up :)
It was an E Bar on Hawk so that's where I'm probably getting it from, will change it for my F18 students, many thanks.
@@FastJetPerformance my pleasure. All the best!
I’ve been looking for a group, but everyone I’ve been to don’t interact at all. Been flying over a year since this past November. Have over 5,000 in all my equipment. Super Taurus, MFDs, Constellation Alpha for the Apache, it’s new from Virpil, Crosswinds, combat and Takeoff Panels. PC was built from IBuyPower, that was the most $. I’m a disabled Iraq Vet from 2003 to 2006, took 30days of Block Leave then 5 Months later sitting in hell in Ramadi where we’d the US Navy Seals Platoon and Chris Kyle that got most kills there in Ramadi, Iraq I was with the 1BN 37AR the M1A1 Abrams. Just did a 15 Month Tour in Baghdad, Iraq then Stop Loss and Insurgency with the first Elections, Cav couldn’t handle it alone so we got new orders to take on the Al Sadar Insurgency in Karabala, Iraq. I got busted up in 06 and was Honorable Discharged from the US Army. I’m 100% Service Connected with the Veterans Administration and got my Social Security in 2007. This is the only problem I’m having in DCS and Carrier Landings. I can land on land but it’s not this perfect 😂. I get the job done though. But yeah just been solo and learning on my own. It’s like everyone is already set in there clicks and don’t want to train or put time into new pilots, and forgetting that they was new at one point and knows how it feels starting out. I do understand that some don’t learn as fast as others but until they try then they don’t know. I just don’t get it! I’ve thought about doing lives and vids on UA-cam and try to teach what I know to the new pilots. Thanks for the vid and I started following you on here now.

How do you trim with the keyboard or a TFlight Hotas One?
Great video, thank you! My only problem is that I am rarely able to get my approach speed down to 135-140 like you. 90% of the time I'm always in the 145 - 150 range. Am I missing something?
Speed Brake.
what you prefer track IR or VR ?
I prefer Track IR for general flying as I can also then read docs on a second screen by VR for hovering and formation work, Dan.
@@FastJetPerformance do you think the resolution on vr is much better these days ?
@@danielvermeere7916 I do. I started with a Rift CV1, pretty poor res - then Rift S which was better but just gone to Reverb G2 and it has very good res in a localised area but it gets worse the further out you go. Quest 2 or Rift S I beleve are the best compromise.
New to DCS, how do you get that red box in the corner to show trim etc, google doesnt want to help me :(
All kinds of hassle for a plane that is built to land in a free fall. SLAM!
Im sending the noobies your way xD
What are the key mappings for the trim on the keyboard?
Not sure, I map the trim to the joystick hat.
Is the E bar the same as the AOA bracket?
Yes, exactly the same.
@@FastJetPerformance Thanks, Tim!
Do you guys have a squadron server on DCS multiplayer? I'm recently retired air force looking for a place fly around in on DCS online

If this going meta i coming money providing
Yes, going all in for the Metaverse - it's gonna get weird in my school, lol
what are your pc specs?
In the description - I'll do a vid.
Too many acronyms in aviation. And I hate when people use acronyms and assume everybody knows what they’re talking about. In this case, “FJP”. I think you mean fluid jet polishing…which is a term I hadn’t heard. Anyway, still a good video but I just wanted to give a little constructive criticism.
hahah military is just acronyms. 😂
hope your mother in law never watches this video 🙂
What visual reference points do you use in the F18 to confirm spacing in the downwind mate?
Wingtip on the runway edge should do it, might need to be a bit wider than that if heavy or with a wind pushing you away from the runway. For the boat they use 1.2 nm downwind for a 30 degree angle of bank final turn but you can use more on a shore establishment if you want.
@FastJetPerformance Awesome, thanks very much! Hope you're having an awesome festive season mate!
