Why dark towels are better than white towels 🛁

- The color of one of these towels is technically superior to the other one
Do you know which one it is?
If you guessed the darker towel, then you’d be right! And here’s why:
When manufacturers are making towels, at the end of the process they add in softeners-and sometimes even a silicone finish-to make new towels feel fluffier & lusher to you in stores.
BUT! That coating on the towel fibers reduces its absorbency. Darker and bold colors better represent a towel’s actual softness in the long-term cuz their dye helps resist, absorbing softeners. And once those softeners are washed out, the towels are going to revert to their true softness, regardless of color

Oh. So that's why new towels suck so much. I always just wash them 3 times, before even trying to use them. I *hate* that weird feeling, when you try to dry off and your towel just smears the water around and leaves fuzz all over you 🤨
RIGHT? 😭
It's like they miss the whole purpose of being a towel 💀
Cheap towels do that imo. I just upgraded my towels to a higher price point and I don't have that smearing problem
The towels I bought are called
I Am
I live in Canada so not sure where to buy them internationally.
Oh and they are white and peach ones. So the dark concept Is not entirely true
I hate that shit.
Yes!!! A FUZZ!!!
I need a true hard softness!
It’ll do the same thing if you use traditional softeners when washing them; they feel so much nicer if you just add a water softener like white vinegar in the softening spot (if you have hard water) then dry them on the hottest and fastest setting they can be on (look at the tag). The heat and spin from the dryer fluff it up and dry it out so it’s soft and also absorbs water really well.
Also same, this is why I still use my kids towels from my childhood 😅 they may look childish but my parents were okay with me taking them and I don’t need to break in new towels
Another tip is to not use fabric softener on your towels. It leaves a film on them that builds up over time and makes them less absorbent.
Even better tip is to not use fabric softener at all anywhere. That sh*t is just completely useless and will just ruin your fabrics
@mr.paperbag771 I personally don't use it at all but some people really like it. I use vinegar instead, it still conditions the fabric, doesn't cause build up in the machine, doesn't leave a smell on the clothes, sanitizes, and I've noticed my colors stay a lot better.
@@allismith5749 that I can agree with. Vinegar works wonders if your clothes have any stenches you can't get rid of. I also read somewhere that you should actually vinegar + baking soda wash your towels at least once a year! It cleans the wachine machine as well.
@mr.paperbag771 oh I'm definitely going to try that!
@@allismith5749 just be careful on the order or you will have a foam fest in your laundry room.
I usually put 1/2 dl of baking soda to the automatic powder slot 1 and a 1 dl of white vinegar to the slot 2. That way it first mixes the baking soda to the clothes, does it's magic and only then adds the vinegar without causing the chemical reaction we know from all the movies. I have a 8kg machine and while these amounts worked for me, they might vary.
Other way is to place the baking soda already mixed to water, or as powder, with your clothes as you load. Or just have two different washes. The first with a slightly bigger amount of baking soda and a second with vinegar. But who has the money to do two washes for the same laundry? Not me at least!
Hot take: Rougher towels are better than soft fluffy towels
More absorbent for sure
I forgot to mention that bit too
And you don’t have to deal with the lint and fuzz on the first few uses too!
I just like the phrase hot take.

I still prefer white linens when staying at hotels so I can spot check for any stains/soils
I’ve never seen non-white hotel towels. They bleach the crap out of those things!
I prefer white ones because i can wash them at 90° and kill all the germs
@@evilsharkey8954I have 🤢 I know it's just stains but it's still gross.
white towels and wash rags are bleached, killing bacteria. most people don't sanitize their dark towels and rags...
Yep. And anytime I get colored towels they all end up turning that pinkish /peach color from bleach anyway... so I'd prefer white.
Like I'm NOT going to bleach washcloths and towels? Cmon now... that's just disgusting...
I don't care what this man says. White is better. And that's not even getting into how dyes can cause yeast infections...
Correct. This is why you shouldn’t use fabric softener on towels. It stops them working effectively.
Or just ever for any reason fabric softener should not exist
Random fact: If someone gets hurt and you need to stop a open wound, always choose white towels. Colored towels have dyes that bleed which is not good for open wounds!
why would you even put a towel on an open wound?

Also as women, dark towels are always better for when you take a bath during your period. (Edit: Yall I’m talking about STAINS I don’t just leave blood on towels.)
yup that’s why i have dark and light towels
Ew! Just wash your towel if there's blood on it
@@radhiadeedou8286 blood is famously very hard to completely remove. On a light towel dark blood stains are more likely to stand out visibly even after washing, as opposed to on a darker towel, where they can "camouflage" easier, which makes sense because those "stains" after washing don't mean the towel is still dirty, so I'd rather have a dark towel than a white towel with dark spots even if it still perfectly usable.
I always use orange/red towels while on my period haha
@@radhiadeedou8286 well obviously but I’m talking about stains
My dad never ever used fabric softener and he also never separated our laundry and I asked him why and he said that if we use fabric softener our towels won’t work.
That’s correct. Fabric softeners create a waxy coating because they’re oil-based. This keeps your towels from absorbing like they’re supposed to.
Yes, never use them on towels, rugs or cleaning rags.
Not only does it coat your garments in a waxy coating, but it also chemically breaks down the fibres. Your garments are softer because they're being worn out (same as an old pair of jeans have really soft knees).
Not only does it damage your clothes, but the broken down fibres and waxy residue will also clog up your washing machine.
Still want soft clothes? Pop a small amount of vinegar in where you'd put your fabric softener. It won't make your laundry smell, but it'll soften it just a bit. Bonus: it sets colours, so any new garments won't have the colours bleed out of them.
@@VaryaEQ I prefer that waxy coat.
@@jadapinkett1656 thank you for that information ❤
But if they're both the same style towel, from the same manufacturer, made with the same material, and the only difference is the dye, then presumably once the 'finish' is washed out from the white towel, the towels will be the same level of soft and absorbent.
Exactly! This video was so convoluted, confusing, and unnecessary...
A darker color won't let blood stain.

Always soak towels and bed sheets in cold water and white vinegar for 24 h. It preserved the color and removes the "finish"
Larry David was right about rough towels and now that I hit my towels against a rock ive been getting dry in no time.
Wash with vinegar and baking soda helped me get off any buildup and made them feel softer.
My god I didn’t know this, I have a set of pink towels that aren’t that soft but, my black towels still feel awesome. Thanks for the info
For some reason I always get goosebumps every single time I touch a towel
There is a great episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry gets into an argument with Suzy about how his old scratchy towels are better than her new ones because they are more absorbant. I agree with Larry.
There are so many instances where Larry is right 😂😂
I personally like the roughness in a towel. I always feel like the softer the towel, the less absorbent it is. That’s from personal experience. Maybe I would prefer white towels then lol
I still prefer white because if there’s a stain i want to see it not ignore it! Also i used distilled vinegar instead of fabric softners
I can’t use dark towels because of my acne medication it whitens everything
Plus they bleed and you can’t wash them on hot or bleach them and they will fade if you hang them to dry in the sun
I literally have that blue one and it’s still super soft from when I got it.
I always liked dark towels. Esp when it's that time of the month. I don't want to dry off with a white towel and get blood on it

@@Scott-got-caughta male immediately piping up to tell a woman what to do... gtfo
Nah, bedlinens and towels, sheets etc. should ideally be white and 100% cotton for hygiene reasons. You can usually wash them at 90 degrees Celsius, a temperature which kills most any microbes but makes dyed fabrics look worn out.
I agree. Besides high temperature, the color white also allows you to use harsher cleaning agents like bleach.
They are saying that the feeling of the dark color ones on the shelf don't lie as much about softness and texture. So if the dark one feels very different than white, you are getting ripped of about the softness of the white one.
I love crispy towels!
Why? Do you bake them at 360 degrees 😂
I prefer dark towels, because I like dark colors.
And apparently they’re softness comes from their darkness, so that’s a plus
Yeah but white is better for keeping things clean, stain free and fresh, because you can't bleach colored towels 😊
You can bleach colored towels... won't look right but you still can

White towels are better because they can be bleached. I never buy colored towels because they end up smelling funky
Then feel the dark towel to get a better idea of how they’ll feel in the long term, but you can still buy white towels.
Exactly! Like, they're the same exact towels regardless of color... Idk what the point of this video is, but everyone somehow reached the conclusion that dark towels are softer...
Omigosh, this is why I buy my towels from the Salvation Army. I didn't know why but I just knew older towels actually absorbed moisture and new towels didn't and just left lint on you.
I dont use softener. Cheap vinegar makes everything soft, even jeans. Healthier for your skin and for the environment (doesnt pollute thr rinse water.)

That may be astonishing for you, but dirtiness does not depend on colour. It depends on the actual dirt on the surface of something. But if you prefer an illusion of clean than yes - dark colour would mask more dirt.

Wash towels in hot water with the minimum amount of detergent and put vinegar instead of fabric softener. Towels will be soft as absorbent as they can be.
Another thing with towels, or clothes in general, if you use fabric softener, it’s not good for the clothes and it can create a film. If you use vinegar as a fabric softener for your towels, it’s better for the clothes. They’re softer and there’s no film. Vinegar smell is gone by the time the clothes/towels are dry. I didn’t believe it at first but since I first did it, I’ve noticed how much better the towels/clothes feel. Haven’t gone back to regular fabric softener since.

Never knew I needed this information
Sorry, but anything that dries my dishes or my body I am going to get a white towel so I can bleach it. Dark colors fade and just start to look crappy over time. If you want your towels to be absorbent, stop putting freaking dryer sheets in the dryer. Wash them on hot water, just soap, no fabric softener, and don’t put a dryer sheet in the dryer. Wash all that fabric softener and starch etc. out of your towels and they will actually be absorbent. Also, check the fabric content. If they’re not 100% cotton, they’re not going to be as absorbent as they could be.
As a sidenote, stop using dryer sheets all together. They are just plastic sheets coated in fragrance and all that plastic goes into a landfill which is no better than a water bottle or anything else.
As a second sidenote, do a little research on the effects that all that fragrance from dryer sheets and those super smelly beads or “fragrance extenders” that you put in your washer to make things “smell good” have on your brain and your body and your chemistry. Something smells good if it’s clean. You don’t have to add fragrance to it. And PS you’re probably triggering people’s allergies and asthma with all that fragrance but they’re just too nice to tell you that you reek like a $2 hooker.
Over exaggeration, dryer sheets ain't like using perfume or cologne on you at all 😂
But you can only bleach the white which helps you clean it much better. Dark towels are not more superior 💀
I love white towels and cloths.
