If this doesn’t pan out you could always go into modeling.😂😂😂. Great video, good points of perspective on this one. My thoughts: A mentor DP that I worked with in the past, said it best, “Bigger, softer.” Soft light unfortunately doesn’t change too much Based on how you diffuse it, other than intensity and fall off. (Im referencing thicker diffusion). Book lights are a way to take a smaller source and making it bigger. Soft boxes do the same thing. The idea is that you want the fill the front diffusion as evenly as possible. The front diffusion now becomes the light source. Many ways to make that happen, but ultimately the goals, the same bigger softer. I like this idea, if it was around 10+ years . Now it just feels a little gimmicky.
Wonderfully comprehensive review! Thank you for taking the time. Even though the output is similar to other soft light configurations I do appreciate the multiplicity of bounce and diffusion options that are possible with the AirGlow/BounceHouse/Pond Hockey Net and I often run it through a 6x6 or larger frame of diff which adds some change in characteristic as well. I understand the people who think this is much ado about nothing, but I changed my mind once I started using it in the field on a regular basis. It’s also fun to pull it out for DP’s who have not played with it before😀
Great review. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the usual application for a book light being usually 8x8 and up. This design offers flexibility with adapting to many different lights easily and using lower height stands. That seams to be the main selling point. Shame about the price :(
I could only see it having some sort of application if you want something really soft with a small footprint . In any other circumstance there’s already soft panels available that are a similar size or larger .
Love your videos and watched all of them. I think that the Godox knowled f600 is an option for small footprint, power, and size / softness, along with extended height reach with a shorter stand.
Inasmuch as I’m a photographer who only shoots videos here and there, with all of the financials that entails, no DOP Choice for me...I’m a Chimera and LightTools guy.
@@JacoxNovak I've never done it, there is this stupid logic here in Melbourne that umbrella's are stills only. My first COB lights had an umbrella mount and I purchased the largest umbrella I could find 6 of 7ft thinking how fast is this to set up, never got used on set
It is a good thing they try to innovate, but the airglow seems to be a dead end. The space it takes up in a truck, plus the set up time are for me not worth the bit small footprint on set. As suggested maybe the bigger one has its advantages.
I've been debating weather to keep or sell this unit. I have several DPs that want it, mostly doco interview guys. But yep, i have to agree, it takes up so much space in the van for how often I would use it.
love your reviews your insight it gold, but this product belongs in the dumps cost vs what i actual does.... hard pass. good try DOP Choice but your not fooling anyone
We have one of these and it's mere minutes to set up. Can probably get one out of the bag, onto the light and up and running in 3-5 minutes. If you don't have 3-5 minutes to set up a modifier, you're gonna be stuck rolling with bare Astras for all your setups.
Useless piece of gear....I would rather buy a flexible led panel for that hilarious amount of money....Problem with cine/production field is it/s full of stupid hipsters...
This was invented by arguably one of the biggest and best gaffers in the world… Martin Smith… hipster? I don’t know, he’s British that count? it may not be for you, but if you think just sticking a flex panel up is the same thing your missing the point of what this does, and the various options it affords… like many products it was built to fit a need around a certain kind of lighting principal, in this case a book light.
@@alina9757-v2x So you think Martins stupid, just hanging out gaffing Mission Impossible inventing useless hipster gear... tell us you know nothing about lighting without telling us...
We've gone full circle, I love how this is just a newer version of an old mole richardson zip softlite
it's also great for floating food and drinks in the pool, and with a single scrim front rag, it even keeps the bugs away.
If this doesn’t pan out you could always go into modeling.😂😂😂.

Nice to see you again! You look very healthy! Oh, of course, I'm talking about Fletcher 😁
Good video as always....still have my old school Mole Richardson Zip lights...
@@recardosands9948 I used those in broadcast tv for a decade. That's why I embraced the Skypanel 60c so fast
We'll call this "Andrew: The Movie" 👏👏👏
Had to skip to next section in case my gf came in the room and saw Andrew and decided to leave me.

Thanks Andrew. We are still waiting for the Skypanel X review. They better send you 6 of those
So they've reinvented the scoop light.
now comes in more breakable!

Lots of options
Like the idea...hate the price. $1350 for materials and a pump.
1350 for a semi-transparent air mattress with no electric pump?

love dop choice, but srsly come on
just use a litemat 4 or whatever. i've rarely seen anything more over-engineered than this thing, for what it does.

insanely over priced... absolute joke. Would be cool if Chimera made this same concept with rods etc instead of an inflatable.
