Hello there. I drive one of these Scanias in the Danish army. The Danish Army has chosen to buy a type of tractor that can tow all three types of trailer that have been chosen for the tractors. 2 axle lowbed, max load 25t. 3 axle lowbed, max load 42t. 8 axle flatbed, max load 82t.
These trucks are just meant for long distance hauls, they will never actually see the frontline. As soon as there are no roads available, it's much faster to just offload and drive the vehicles themselves.
Ramp trucks require more height. Low loaders like these are common for heavy loads because they keep the centre of gravity low making both roll overs at speed less common and bridge clearances better. BTW - these are not standard M113’s either. Count the road wheels.
So you think 650 horsepower is too little?. After all, it's not just horsepower that does it, it's more important how big the torque is. Lesson over ;-)
Only for the highway? Wouldn't you want some offroad capabilities for tank transports? How do they get past speedbumps? They almost hit axles on that tiny dirt road with very small bumps! Absolutely horrible for tank transports, just so extremely limited in areas you can travel to.
The bed itself can be raised to approx 80 cm above the ground. And the vehicle is not purchased to be able to drive off-road. If a vehicle needs to be picked up off-road, we use a recovery vehicle to pick it up and then drag it out to where they can then get onto a trailer.

Why not using ramps this method seems like it needs a smooth surface to work.Beeing military it should be able to be used everywere.
