    Paul Revere & The Raiders was my most favorite group during my grade school and middle junior high years! I loved Mark Lindsay. I am so sorry about Paul Revere. May he rest in peace!! This was an excellent band!

    The cover version of "Louie Louie" that is closest in arrangement to Richard Berry's original is The Beach Boys version.

    Love Paul Revere and the raiders. However, they did not record "Louie Louie" first. Richard Berry, the writer recorded it with the Pharaohs in 1957. The raiders recorded their version in 1963, the same week as the Kingsmen recorded their version.

    • @celosemnexo
      @celosemnexo 7 місяців тому

      They recorded it one week after The Kingsmen recorded it. And Rockin' Robin Roberts and the Wailers had recorded it before them both.

    I saw them at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh in 1965---they, along with Bo Didley were opening act for The Rolling Stones. I didn't realize then what JERKS they were. I do know that I Really liked Bo and I the Stones were hot then 🎤. Hard to believe now, but back then we got "Dressed Up" to go to hear groups. 😊

    Loved all the fuss regarding the lyrics and the FBI. It was really nothing more than an advertising gimmick that increased the sales of the record. It was a joke...and the FBI fell for it. Classic!

      Before they hit the national charts in mid1965 PR&R played many times at Sealth High School dances always finishing up with a very long version of SUMMERTIME. I also remember PR&R and the Wailers playing many times at White Center Roller Rink. Wailers would finish with Gene Pitney's LAST TIME TO TURN AROUND. Admission at both venues was 50c!

    Touching story, except for the part where it isn't true.
    Paul Revere and the Raiders did NOT record it first.
    1. it's Richard Berry's tune.
    (but, it was a totally different arrangement)
    2. The Wailers + Rockin Robin Roberts recorded 2 years before the Raiders (and also invented the arrangement that the Raiders ended up copying) and it was a HUGE regional hit.
    3. The Kingsmen recorded it in Seattle 10 days before The Raiders did - in the same studio, no less! That recording (by the Kingsmen) became the huge internationally selling version that can still be heard on the radio to this day.
    So in summary; they didn't record it first - not even close. In actual fact, the Raiders were closer to being one of the LAST bands to record it, definitely one of the last commercially viable recordings at least.
    my source for this info is a book entitled:
    Sonic Boom
    (the history of Northwest rock from "Louie Louie" to "Smells like teen Spirit".

    The Wailers were the very first & the raiders copied the Wailers version !!

    Mr Richard Berry who wrote and recorded it in 57 might disagree with the "we were the first" bit

    • @mytfy1
      @mytfy1 9 років тому

      Bowser1948 Richard Berry penned Louie Louie in '55, it was released in '57. I loved the original Paul Revere & the Raiders. Just Like Me, Hungry, Kicks with a couple of others in that time span were great tunes. Unfortunately, they were a dollar short and literally a day late with Louie Louie. RIP my friend Paul Revere.

    • @LukeWalstead
      @LukeWalstead 9 років тому

      I think the Kingsmen might as well, considering their version was recorded 10 days before the Raiders was. Also, The Wailers with Rockin Robin Roberts recorded the version that both of the aforementioned bands copied.
      It's horrible that Paul would try to claim otherwise - he, of all people, knows better.
      sad. . .

      You're trivializing the Raiders with your comment. Back then it was dog eat dog. I've read a few articles concerning this subject. I guess it all depends on what you want to believe. To me, it's anybody's guess. I'll say this much...the Kingsmen had the best version of Louie Louie, no other recordings even come close. I also appreciated your input. Have a good one.

      I'm sorry, I don't mean to trivialize their music - it's his b.s. claim that he was the first, when in fact he was closer to being the last.
      It's arrogant, trivializing and disrespectful to all the other PNW bands of that era for him to say such things.
      I don't care who you are or what you've accomplished; if you're going to do something like that - you've trivialized your own accomplishments by discounting others.
      love his music - hate his attitude.
      peace.

      Paul was an egomaniac. It was the sum of the parts that made the group great. Paul took a "Good Thing" pun intended and destroyed it.
      RIP Paul.The early raiders music is what I enjoyed. He was his own worst enemy. I really don't think he had the frame of mind at that time to sit back and realize that his band members were exceptional. He wound up later with a lounge band playing on cruise ships. Of course not with any original member,save himself. I enjoyed your input.Take care.

    It would have if Mark Linsay the 1st lead singer. Phil (Fang)Volk Bass, guitarist, Smitty the drummer, Drake Levin or Jim Harpo Valley on lead guitar.If they would have been on w/ Paul Revere.They are the Original

      it's called show biz, dude. Paul often spoke about the Wailers in interviews - he said if it hadn't been for the Wailers doing Louie Louie, the Raiders probably wouldn't have done it.

    Revere was always a figurehead group leader. He plays nothing here.

    • @ronfowlermusic
      @ronfowlermusic 2 роки тому

      it's true he's not playing here, but make no mistake, he was the band leader. They never used a setlist onstage, so the band always had to be ready for whatever song he might want them to play. He hired all the musicians, probably fired a few, too. There are other videos from later years where he IS playing with the band, but back in the 80's, he did seem to spend more time goofing than playing.

    OMG, what a freak show this is. Guess I’m more of a rock purist, so their gaudy show biz antics aren’t my cup of tea.
