I just love my Blackstar Fly3. The important thing to me is that you just get on with practising on not thinking "man, I hate this tone..." I play it completely clean, with ISF on 10 (fully clockwise). Perfect for jazz. Honest! Get the extension speaker.
I own the fly 3 blackstar. It's good especially for clean sounds. The only annoying matter is that I can't feed the amp with a common powerbank because of the not typical voltage (6.5V DC)
Use step up converter to convert from 5v to 6.5v its easy. I have micro cube which takes 5.8v so i used this thing to convert 5v to 5.8v it really works
I love the Blackstar! It's my go-to practice amp. Never tried the NUX, but I think it uses the same software as the NUX Mighty Plug, which I have and it's amazing.
I already have a Fly 3 that I like a lot, but the Katana and the NU-X both sound great. Crazy how good the sound from these small amps is these days. I remember when it was just between the Pignose or Smokey amps.
Sound wise, I liked the Blackstar. Feature wise, I liked the NUX because of the bluetooth connectivity, but also the stereo option of the blackstar is nice. I like more gritty sounds than clean sounds, so bluetooth aside, I think the blackstar is for me.
There is a Bluetooth-enabled Fly 3 available. www.blackstaramps.com/uk/ranges/fly-bluetooth I have the basic model and the extension stereo speaker. It makes a huge tonal difference and brings the output up to 6W.
Its just the speaker and amp quality that matters, in blackstar and nux and katana they all use class D amps and Celestion or Eminence full range speakers, if you want it to sound bigger just plug it to a mixer and then to a quality PA speaker.
They are amazing!!! I have the katana and the fly, both superb, I have ordered the NUX. I have real classic tube amps, I don’t play them anymore at home since I discovered these mini amps. To answer your question, marshall and fender don’t have to come up with good products, the names sell alone.
I'm guessing that Marshall will drop a Code 5 amp soon enough. It's also worth noting that they do 1 and 5 watt versions of their all-tube amps - just not in this price range. Fender is a bit different considering they're primarily a guitar company - but they do do the Mustang (amplifier) so I don't know why they've not brought out a mini version of that. Maybe they've realised that Boss has cornered the market on that front...
I have a NUX and it is great. I play mellow lead on the rhythm pickup. You do need the app to get to get the lowest volume, 3 band eq, right amount of reverb or delay, and the other effects which are totally useless. The distortion is a bit boxy - but it doesn't have tons of annoying fizz that cheaper amps have. I got it to see directly in front of my music speakers, so I can play everything as low as possible.
Thanks Landon....was thinking of grabbing a Mini amp shortly and have been looking at a few including these three..( I like to research before I buy ). Other Amps on my list were the new 'Nux Mini Air' and the 'Laney STB'... and the 'JOYO Jam buddy'. Have you tried any of these?
I have both the Katana Mini and the Blackstar. I use them together in stereo and they sound incredible (video on my channel). Im also going to order the NUX next month
Radio Shack had a speaker phone amplifier. You could modify the plug to a jack. It ran on batteries. Sounded like the intro to I can’t get no satisfaction when cranked up.

Hey, good review! I'm currently debating the three. You corrected yourself on the pronunciation of NUX. Are you *sure* it's NU-X and not "nucks?" I'm not saying it's on or the other! I've been trying to find something on their site, or someone from the company in a video pronouncing the name, with no such luck! lol
@@landonbailey That seems to be the general consensus, though I've heard "nucks" and even "nukes" from some people. I just wish the manufacturer's site had some clue on the matter!
The Katana does really sound quite good for the size. I didn't think that there would be ANY good sounds at all let alone a decent clean tone but that Boss Katana does give me some food for thought. I think I'll have to have a look/hear at that one, and the others as the NUX wasn't bad either. They've obviously been getting the boffins doing some work here. Thanks for the video. You're a funny CaNaDiAn. i'm a less funny Australian. Btw, I'm a tele lover like yourself (you seem to be anyway) but in terms of fingerboards which do you favour. I personally prefer maple to rosewood and I see a few maple fingerboards in the background. Just curious. Maybe it's not something that you think much aboot (sorry, couldn't help that).
First thought Fender and Marshall have to live up that "Authentic" standard. 12inch speakers, greenbacks, spring reverb etc etc..... I think eventually they will build bedroom amps as more music and musicians shift to small studios and home recording, DI, etc... Or start putting power attenuators to go down to 1-5 watts etc.
You would think that one of the big companies would team up with the likes of Bose and produce a top class mini amp. The Katana Mini would be my choice too Landon 👍
Have you thought of just using a room mic instead of mic'ing the amp directly? Especially with these little ones, it gives a more accurate representation of what you can expect to hear. And please don't take that as a "you can't please everyone" type of question. It's not a dig. Just genuinely curious if you've thought of doing it that way with the little amps?
Couple of comments on points you raise. 1. Clearly (Cherub CN) intentionally cloned the shape of the Fly 3 to advantage themselves of its already earned and deserved reputation and popularity, which I think a good thing. 2. I'm with you on point and shoot simplicity. In a mini amp like this I don't want or need a zillion config features. I just want to use them for ad hoc practice. That was an aspect of my preference for the Fly 3 with ISF. At the time I bought the 6W STEREO combo Fly 3 + Fly 103 WITH PSU cost the same as 7W BOSS Katana without PSU. The DC Roland PSU for the Katana has to be purchased separately as an overpriced accessory (AUD$65 in my country). Hey that $65 saved? I added AUD$20 and for AUD$85 bought me my NUX Mighty Plug MP-2.
I just bought a Vox VT40x, cuz i play at home by myself. But if Fender made the Blues Jr with an attenuator, they would've got my money! I don't understand why they haven't understood that yet.....
Fender and Marshall and Orange and so make these kinds of amps as novelty; they are the go to big names in the amp world, and that's what they rely on, not this. Blackstar and Boss on the other hand are relatively new. It is actually a pretty good way for them to make money, having actual good amps for less than 100 dollars that fit in your hand.

I don't care abut the why. They just don't. Blackstar for me 100%. As a retired restarter always an early adopter even in my youth (bought an Ibanez lawsuite SG back in Jan 75 when Ibanez were lesser known brand than Cort today), I didn't carry any of the image marketing brand baggage when I returned five years ago. Apart from a standalone Blackstar Fly 3 in basic black, I now also own a Fly 3 + Fly 3 103 Vintage (Cream & Oxblood) Stereo Combo pack, x2 ID:Core 40 practice amps - the original (V1) my initial return amp now with five years every other day actual use, and the latest ID:Core 40 V3, a Blackstar Artist 30 Blonde 6L6 30W (hybrid) valve amp, a Blackstar ID:Series 260 TVP digital modelling amp w/ SHARC processor valve amp emulation. Also have a zillion NUX pedals & looper and their MIghty Plug MP-2 smart 'amplug' on steroids! What is surprising is that I ended up with a Fender Acoustasonic for my humble acoustic amp needs and which fitted my desired budget and trial of Fender's Acoustasonic series which I do like a lot and think are value for money, and a Fender Champion 100, their 'every man's amp' of today in that class pitched at a price point every man can afford. Other than purist snobbery, it truly is hard to fault the product. I can't speak highly enough of it. The Blackstar Artist Blonde and Fender Champion both came supplied with their own dual channel pedals ITB, and I bought Blackstar's accessory proprietary smart pedals for the ID:Core (FS-11) and ID:Series 260 TVP (FS-10) which add pragmatic means to remotely exploit their intrinsic features.
