  • Melting fine gold with borax from our hardrock ore milling process using an oxygen acetylene torch and borax in a crucible. I forgot to mention in the video always save your crucible material and crush it up to get the fine gold that didn't melt into your button.

    The borax makes a black glassy material that can be seen stuck to the inside of the crucible around 3:39 when I break it to get the gold button out.

    I did that once when I had a pile of very fine gold flakes. Used a propane torch and Borax as a flux. Took awhile, but came out fine - my button is 2.7 DWT - a little more than a 10th ounce - about $135 at 80% of today's spot price for gold. (80% is what I get for small amounts where I sell my gold).

    What do you do if you don't have a torch?? All I have is a home made furnace for melting aluminum cans..

    If you wanted to get rid of some of the base metals(not all) you could use some sodium carbonate with your borax. Nice to see a person that knows you only need borax and not a "flux" to melt gold. Nice vid.

    My father used to melt giod buggets. He added borax half way and another compound forgot . Then when the gold button cooled for a minute he drpped in HCL cloridic acid to clean surface impurities which made the button look rather dark. The gold color came after the acid bath.

    what is the ratio of borax and what is the purity of the button?

    • @mbmmllc
      @mbmmllc  4 роки тому +3

      I dump around a teaspoon or two per ounce of gold. The borax doesn't remove metals such as silver, and copper. It works great for removing the black sand, which combines with the borax to form a black glass type of material. The purity of our gold is around .950 fine. Thanks for watching and posting.

    Every time i melt acid refined gold it turns to black brittle slag?

    • @mbmmllc
      @mbmmllc  9 років тому

      Greg-
      I am not sure why that would be. I don't have a lot of experience melting gold, but this was native hard rock. I don't know why there would be a difference with refined gold. There are lots of guys out there on UA-cam that I would check with about your problem who are way more experienced than I am. Try looking up Metallic Mario. He has given me some tips in the past. He left me a comment on this video down toward the bottom so just click on his name to go to his page. Thanks and good luck

    • @MCRroxas
      @MCRroxas 9 років тому

      greg drake If you are using aqua regia to acid refine the gold then you need to filter the acid so theres no sediment them add sodium metabisulfate to make the gold precipitate. It should look like mud and that mud is what you melt down. If you take the junk straight out from the aqua regia then thats just all the slag and stuff you dont want.

    • @mbmmllc
      @mbmmllc  10 років тому

      Blake-
      Sometimes when I have a lot of black sand mixed in I will get a black film on the gold button too. You can try adding more borax, also I use muriatic acid (same stuff to clean grout and mortar, can be found at any hardware store) and let the button soak for a few hours. Pull out the button and the black film will wash off revealing a nice shiny gold button.
      Good Luck!

    What does the borax do?

    • @mbmmllc
      @mbmmllc  6 років тому

      The borax absorbs the oxides that may still be left in with the gold when it melts. Here is a newer video we posted a few days ago showing a more complete process: ua-cam.com/video/LvB7I4Cr6Jo/v-deo.html

      Thank you for the comment. There are several ways to end up with a pure gold product, but I have not explored them in detail. There is a great UA-cam channel by metalicmario that has a lot of refining and smelting info. You can check it out by searching metalicmario on UA-cam or he has actually commented below so you can just click through to his channel by clicking his name on his post below.
