    Pete Sampras has been the player many of today's greats of the game looked up to growing up.
    Federer, Djokovic and Wawrinka, to name just a few. His service and his slam dunk remain to this day,
    signature moves, that are absolute works of art.

    Yet again, we have a narrator who can't pronounce an important name, Pete's coach, Tim Gullickson. It is NOT GULL ka sin. It is GULL ick son. This makes me nuts.

      I was about to make the same comment. This kind of careless error throws the whole video in doubt, what else do they have wrong? Does the video maker actually have any authority or direct knowledge to justify his story or has he just thrown a whole load of photos together and added a "commentary" to them?

    He quit because he was getting older and wasn't as quick as he once was. Every great champion has to quit, before they start making a fool of the self, aka getting beat by much lower ranked, younger, players. He did the right thing at the right time for him and will always be remembered as one of the all time greats !!

      Agreed, and I think he will someday fairly soon. I guess the authorities are just waiting for an excuse; Pete's been conspicuously absent from the sport (for the most part; senior's tour excepted) since he retired. Not an excuse, mind you, just that he's always been a bit harder to celebrate and recognize than some of his American counterparts from the same/earlier eras, open-era records notwithstanding.

    I saw him only once playing at the Champions Tour in Switzerland. I was not impressed by his backhand, as he was just trying to keep the ball in the court, deep but without much speed. However, service, volleys and of course forehand were mind blowing!

    • @stevefowler3398

      @@stevefowler3398 Perhaps in his best days, but not at the Champions Tour. At the same day Sampras played a doubles against two strong young players, both playing one handed backhand with a lot of speed and topspin, and the contrast to Sampras’ backhand was huge. Nevertheless the young players didn’t have any chance in the doubles, of course.

    Imagine if Pete had not retired so early.
    He could concievably have played another 10 years.
    Which would have undoubtedly meant more GRANS SLAM wins.
    Especially I feel, US OPEN and WIMBLEDON.
    Which would inevitably have deprived the TOP 3 from attaing their records (apart maybe from Nadal in the French).
    If that had happened, Pete would have had an unassailable record.
    Sad for tennis fans, but Pete is the master of his ship, and obviously he is a very contented man.

    • @danbotez1307
      @danbotez1307 2 роки тому

      He had to retire since he was beaten so much. Right after Wimbledon 2000 hw was beaten at 35 tournaments in a row for over two years. He finally lucked out with a relatively easy draw at the 2002 USO and after winning he wisely retired immediately.
