Show me a game he went in NOT a lock for 1st. THAT is why. He knew he'd lose, so since he was a lock on 2nd by $1,400, he wagered the most ($1,399) to get 2nd no matter what (ie if he gets it wrong and the other gets it right).
Why is this so difficult for people to understand. He played the perfect strategy on the last question as he was trailing. All he could hope for is she missed as a him betting the top amount would have still not been enough as he would have lost by a dollar. In that scenario you play a lower amount and Hope that the leader misses the question as they would typically bet enough to cover you meaning you would take the lead only if they answer the question wrong. The amount was perfectly played and would have worked if she missed the question, it was his only hope of winning at that time
@@brendanc2675 you failed in math class huh. Here I will help you. 23,400 (James amount going into final jeopardy) now lets times that by 2. 23,400 x 2 = 46,800 would have been his max he could earn. We will miss him. Before I don't like to see the jeopardy show after I saw James start like this show and I do record every time. I am so sorry to lose James but he still the one smarts guy I haven't seen before.
I look forward to seeing James in the tournament of champions. Does anyone think he's going to steamroll his opponents then? I know the champions have the knowledge, no doubt there. But the question is, do they have the GUTS? James didn't just win big by knowing a lot of trivia, he won because he always bet big. Most Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardies, he risked most of it to all of it, bringing his score up tremendously leaving his opponents in the dust. Most contestants don't have the courage to do that EVERY SINGLE TIME but because he gambles for a living, he's used to it. Of course, in Final Jeopardy, he bet big but no more than he could afford to lose.
I did some quick research, for those of you who still wonder why James' bet was what it was...or to those of you conspiratorially-minded folks! James was in what J! fans refer to as "Stratton's Dilemma"...named after contestant Ted Stratton who faced the situation in 2005 and first talked about it. Because Jay was so close to James, James could not make a bet that could both a) exceed Emma's current score of $26,800 and b) lock out Jay if Jay went all in and got FJ correct. The "solution" for a second place contestant in Stratton's Dilemma is to bite the bullet and bet just enough to lock out a successful all-in bet by Jay and hope Emma both missed and bet to lock out a successful all-in bet by James. If Emma had realized the situation, she probably would have realized she could have safely bet nothing...but James was in a dilemma...he couldn't have successfully defended that. So James did precisely what a player in Stratton's Dilemma is supposed to do. (PS For me, it was JAY'S bet that made zero sense. He should have also realized James was in Stratton's Dilemma and therefore would make no large bet that would drop him under Jay's score no matter what it was...so the best Jay could hope for was a second place finish and $2,000. Therefore Jay should have bet no more than $4,802 and probably less than that...$4,802 covers Emma's score should she bet the $20,201 she actually did and miss the question).
Normally I frown upon gambling, but he seems like a very humble, grounded guy. I never watched the show because I don't have a tv. But I used to. Shame he couldn't break the record for earnings since he was so close, but like he said, he has no reason to be any less proud of himself.

Actually James would've lost even if he had maxed out his Final Jeopardy bet. His low bet was strategic if Emma had guessed wrong. James bet enough to pass the third place guy if he had maxed out so that he would win. Point: he lost the game to Emma fair and square and didn't throw away the game. They tape 5 shows a day 4 times a week..he was only on the show for actually 2 weeks..which finished sometime in March..he actually lost in March and had to keep quiet this whole time...look it up
I thought it was 5 shows per day, 2x a week
Excellent job James! You're a great role model and a phenomenal superstar, in the gambling and game show world!! God bless you and your family!!!
I wonder if Jeopardy's ratings will go down now. I only watched because of James. But congratulations to the lady who won. James is a class A act!
Jeopardy James:) gonna miss your smile!!
Vins Nan Me too. His smile and his personality make it worth watching!
@@baxtercat5462 Even had the kids glued to their seats and learning at the same time:)
Was he tired of being under pressure 5 days a week? I have some reservation about how he came to lose. No only he finished second, he also waged an amount that will prevent him from winning.
The whole week is filmed on Monday.
I agree.
Good luck James! Please come back again.
Love live Ken Jennings...the real Jeopardy GOAT.
No he isn't Brad Rutter is
Some day we will find out whether James or Brad or Ken is the GOAT. I'm imagining a five game series between the three of them
We already know that Brad is better than Ken, so I guess it's down to Brad and James lol
Nobody is better than Watson.
so phenomenal, hope I run into him one day. Smart and heart. Arigatou
