- Sheila E. had been playing conga drums since the age of three. Her father, Pete Escovedo, worked with Santana and led the Latin-jazz fusion band Azteca. She was discovered by Prince in 1984.

She was not discovered by Prince. She was famous be4 they met in 79....She played with George Duke, Flora Purim, etc.......................
HE never said HE discovered her, all media! Saw him speak about seeing her and he mentioned her experience playing for others and how good she was.

Because of her father Pete E, she was surrounded by world renowned Jazz artists.

Tiger Woods started the same way. His dad was right handed, and he just mirrored him. So he actually started as a left handed golfer.

Wow. I remember Sheila E. as a singer back in the 80's; I was too young then to know she started as a percussionist. The woman is BAD ASS!
I'm not sure why anyone should be given any credit for discovering her. All the credit should go to her for being so damn talented!

Way before Prince, Shelia E. was in the limelight. Her father Pete Escoveto was a world renowned percussionist with Santana, Shelia was already recognized way before Prince She as a very young girl wirked with George Duke, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, and Diana Ross.
Esta bella dama, explica como aprendio a tocar las Congas, Su padre Pete Escobido practicaba dario y ella lo miraba tocando, pero para ella su practica era al reves, poque su padre era de mano derecho pues tocaba a la derecha. eso era al contrario porque ella estaba mirando de frente.
She is so amazing I love her so much. I watched her do a drum clinic at West LA music a while back and she completely blew me away.
I'm not a drummer/percussionist. (Strings guy....) Totally. Freakin'. Blowd'd. My. Mind. Truly gifted woman from a gifted family. And local. (Well... to me here in SF. Eatchur hearts out! ;)

those are toca congas and bongos all sheila e series she has her own line of conga drums timbaes etc. thats talent... sweet flawlessly technique clean slaps with the right amount of crisp and dry slaps short n sweet.. love sheila

I was only a kid but I know you were one of the influences that shaped my taste and perception of beauty style and I am proud of that. 80's women are the best women to look up to!
I did the same with the guitar! even though I am right handed, I picked up the guitar like a lefty without changing strings. Now I also play latin percussion and like Sheila, the left hand leads :-o Lo drum has to be on my left tho ;-)

Left hand players have an advantage a bit. they have to learn right hand and then left hand. But they have strong independence. it's amazing.

i saw Sheila at the green house in oakland east 14th street between 39th ave and 42nd ave in 1971 or 72 were you there
i never got used to seeing her play percussion....it's just so odd in the world of pop stars. but she's super talented and beautiful, this much can't be denied.

My drum teacher would get annoyed at me for mirroring him while teaching me djembe which I couldn't understand since I tend to lead with my left hand also but he was doing out of kindness to get me also leading with my right hand but then again ringo leads with his left hand with great results and it definitely true for Sheila E from what she learnt from watching her father
