  • Chicken Breeding Pens
    We are gearing up for the Silkie hatching season for as early as March! Its time for me to to setting up my silkie chicken breeding pens for color chicks and select the best Silkies from my flock. Our goal is to set up for breeding silkie chickens for specific color. We have set up our silkie breeding pens to get splash, blue and black chicks. We start gathering hatching eggs at the end of January for chicks to hatch mid to late February. We have had to wait ONE MONTH since the breeding pens move so that the hens no longer hatch from the previous rooster they were housed with. Join us in this journey to increase our breeding flock and to get the most beautiful healthy chickens we can.
    ABOUT US
    We are Bill and Rebecca and this is Birch Moon Farm. A simple living homestead/farmstead where we try to practice a simply sustainable lifestyle. In 2015 we purchased 5+ acres in the Vermont hills and for the first 18 months lived in a 250 sq ft RV, while we built our own house (with lots of help from amazing friends and family), 3 sheds, a driveway, water well, septic, 2 chicken coops.
    So what made us do all this in our late 40's early 50's? Well, in 2013 Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer and mostly everything that goes with that type of diagnosis. And this all happened 6 months after our wedding. So after about 10 months of treatments, a couple of surgeries, chemo and radiation, we had had enough. We no longer subscribed to what people call the "American Dream". And we didn't want to wait until we were in our late 60's to live our dream. So we sold or gave away everything we owned, and took all our assets and started to live our dream where we would try to be as self sufficient as possible. Do we always succeed? Nope! But we try! And in the end, isn't that all that matters?
    Birch Moon Farm is now home to 2 humans, 2 cats, one dog and lots of silkie chickens! Follow along with us while we build our homestead one project at a time.

    My Dutch rooster showed nesting behavior. He clucked & sat on eggs while his hen ate. He was the best. He snuggled with the hen and chicks in the nest box after they hatched.

    Some Silkie Roosters are the sweetest, they will build a nest, purr to calm an anxious girl and chirp to help her find a place to lay, also he will sit and warm eggs when a broody mama leaves to eat/drink. Super cute!!

    The rooster is making a nest for his hens to lay eggs in.

    Ash is socializing with the hens. I have a rooster, Spike, who is a crossed breed between a golden comet and barred rock. He does this ALL the time with my hens. He always gets in the hen houses, tries to lay with the hens and pushes all the bedding out. It was cute at first but now, I’m sick of fixing the hen houses lol.

      Thank you!!! I didn’t know what to make of it. It really was the cutest thing though. Hopefully he won’t follow your roosters example 🤣🤣🤣

    Me too, I have a mentor who is helping me breed Partridge Chanteclers. He is very experienced and understands both the standard of perfection and also production qualities. I am so lucky, I do not have any perfect birds, but my mentor is helping me pick out the best growouts for breeding. In time they will improve.

    💞The snow is so pretty. Our girls were $76 each which included their vacation for avian influenza and worm treatment. All pets must be vaccinated in Australia. They are due again in August. I have my cat and dog vet at Cannon Hill and my bird vet at Greenslopes. We have bird carriers to transport my kids. 3 budgies. 2 cockatiels. 1 Indian ring neck. 1love bird and 2 silkies. So once a year over a couple of days we are back and forward to the vets. I try to get everyone's shots at the same time so I don't forget anyone. 🙀
    Love Ash and all your guys. They are very beautiful. Keep safe everyone. Love Kas 🌈🐨💕🇦🇺

    The hens make noises, that means they want to lay an egg and the rooster wants to show the hen where to lay her egg. My Ayam Cemani rooster does this and after a while the hen goes to lay there and over a while i go to get the egg. Your silkies are beautiful!! I can't wait to start breeding with silkies. 😊

    Where did you find your reputable hatching eggs from? Are you to the point of selling fertile eggs yet?

      Hi Lori, I get my hatching eggs from Feathered Dreams Farm (facebook). We will start selling hatching eggs hopefully in the spring of 2022.

    Miley is beautiful. I have a silkie hen who just like Miley, her name is Fluffernutter. I’m looking to breed and sell silkie chicks, thanks for all the info. I will need this later on. Look forward to learning with you.

      I haven't seen that with my silkies in the last 4 years. So not sure if it happens with this breed or not. But my hope is to add more girls this year. :)

    I have a question about breeding silkie hens.
    If I took a pure bred silky rooster and breed it with a Brahma hen? Could I take that cross breed off spring and breed it back to a pure silky to get back the silky feathers? From a cross?

    • @birchmoonfarm101
      @birchmoonfarm101  3 роки тому

      Yes, and somebody might have already done it. It is a big project though because it can take generations to get what you want. But its how we got Showgirls/Naked necks, satins, etc.

  • @happychick5052

    My question is,. how can you tell which color chick will be from eggs in breeding pen 2 before hatched ? Are the eggs different colors, splash, black, white, blue?

    • @birchmoonfarm101
      @birchmoonfarm101  3 роки тому

      The silkie eggs are very similar in color so you cant tell chick color by the egg color. I mark them when I gather them, and keep each pen separate in the incubators so I know whos chicks are from which pen. With two splash hens in that pen, I dont know if I will be able to distinguish which hen to which chick.
