I hate to say this, because I dont want to swole your ego-but, watching your vids, actually got me back to the gym, after over 15 years of not doing anything.
Coming from being an 11B, getting out in 2004, then getting in to desk jobs, slowly losing motivation to do, well, any physical activity, over the course of years, this took a toll on my body.
I am now 53. I started going to the gym regularly a couple months ago, and am working a walk/rucking routine in between my gym sessions. I am feeling better every week.
I largely disregard the BS fitness guru bullshit. I actually bought the Rippletoe book you suggested. Simple, done in an hour. I try to steer clear of junk food, and eat normal portions. Not concerned about a "proper balance of macros" and shit like that. I just eat stuff I make.
We have WAY overcomplicated getting fit. And, having gym rats tell us subliminally that THEIR physique is what we should be striving for, is wrong.
Lift heavy things. Walk long distances. Dont fucking over complicate it.
    Signed, a grunt.

I have begun to recognize the limitations my age is slowly putting on my body.
I just want to slow that down - a lot.

I had a stint at a community college 10 years ago. I took the light rail in LA to get there. I got off at the station the school had a shuttle to transport physically impaired students to the school. I noticed that there were not many of those people taking the shuttle. Instead it was 18 to 20 year fatties taking the shuttle. They were not a little overweight...they were much, much bigger than me, at the time. I walked the short distance from the train station to the school...until I got a bicycle. I called the van that the school used "the slacker shuttle."

" ... By these days it was a demerit to be muscular. Each infant was examined at birth, and all who promised undue strength were destroyed.
Humanitarians may protest, but it would have been no true kindness to let an athlete live; he would never have been happy in that state of life to which the Machine had called him; he would have yearned for trees to climb, rivers to bathe in, meadows and hills against which he might measure his body.
Man must be adapted to his surroundings, must he not?
In the dawn of the world our weakly must be exposed on Mount Taygetus, in its twilight our strong will suffer euthanasia, that the Machine may progress, that the Machine may progress, that the Machine may progress eternally!
“You know that we have lost the sense of space. We say ‘space is annihilated,’ but we have annihilated not space, but the sense thereof. We have lost a part of ourselves.
I determined to recover it, and I began by walking up and down the platform of the railway outside my room. Up and down, until I was tired, and so did recapture the meaning of ‘Near’ and ‘Far.’
‘Near’ is a place to which I can get quickly on my feet, not a place to which the train or the air-ship will take me quickly. ‘Far’ is a place to which I cannot get quickly on my feet; the vomitory is ‘far,’ though I could be there in thirty-eight seconds bysummoning the train.
Man is the measure. That was my first lesson. Man's feet are the measure for distance, his hands are the measure for ownership, his body is the measure for all that is lovable and desirable and strong."

Fitness gets very complicated because there is so much information available, much of which is irrelevant or unnecessary for the average person wanting to be prepared.
-have a baseline strength in the compound lifts (squat, bench, pull-up etc)
    -run an 8:00 mile
Having just that will prepare you for most challenges life will produce. You don’t need complicated programs, or to Snatch, or be taking endless supplements, etc.
Most people should Keep it simple and execute.

With all due respect, fitness is a necessity at any age, especially the older you get and the more injuries you acquire. Talk to a physical therapist, likely there are very specific muscle imbalances that, once corrected, will significantly decrease your pain, hopefully to a point you can work out and be activr without much of a problem. Our bodies dont need to be perfect, they just need to be good enough, and that bar is low and clearing it is typically very attainable with a bit of help. Godspeed.

Part of starting out on the negative side of the number line is to start just doing regular stuff, take breaks when you have to. Slowly work up from there. Hopefully I'll start doing some very light rucking in the summer (I'm talking blankets in my pack,) and slowly building from there.

When you are unfit your entire body screams in agony at the thought of lifting just an empty unloaded barbell.
The more you push yourself, the harder you work, the more you challenge yourself, the more you have to stretch yourself for your accomplishments the easier the hard work becomes and the less painful it is.
People prepping their surroundings without prepping themselves are overlooking the blatantly obvious:
Thinking the´re going to come out on top when unprepared for the situation may be a very naive position.
    Praeparareo - ergo sum.

    People don't understand fitness.
You don't have to look like a shredded body builder, those weight cuts take a shit ton out of you. When you do those cuts you have wayyyyy less energy, strength, and stamina than you did before the cut, you feel flat out exhausted.
Fitness is about optimizing your condition, where you're at your strongest, and have stamina to push yourself.
It's also about diet, not like all the bullshit fad diets. It's about optimized nutrition based around your goals. People cut out carbs trying to lose fat, but they zap their energy and lose all motivation to exercise, and end up going back to being a lazy fat shit on the couch.
Nothing wrong with having a little fat on you, as long as you're able to move yourself and your gear the way you need to.

Your physical fitness and situational awareness are your 2 greatest assets besides all the latest weapons and gear... That being said, the best way to get fit is always controversial, and no one has a perfect answer. Whatever your routine is (weights, calisthenics, running, rucking, BJJ, boxing, etc), keep a consistent weekly schedule and work on getting a little better each day.

    Side note: mental fitness.
Our society as a whole has grown stressed, irritable, neurotic.
A motivated amputee fueled by little more than hate and ramen can accomplish twice that of a better armed, more fit individual that's lost hope.
Ask yourselves what'll happen when you haven't had sex, nicotine, alcohol, netflix etc for 3 weeks ON TOP of whatever the situation would be.
When's the last time you went 2 days or more without eating?
Will you be an angry, unthinking mess?
Identify your crutches and face the thought of not having them. Prepare mentally for that.
Vets will remember it as "embracing the suck".
I hope this helps someone that needs to hear it.

Like the Beetles said “Your gonna carry that weight.” 40 lbs on your back is no joke. People are gonna be in for a rude awaking when they try to carry that much without building up to it. Start small like 15 to 20 lbs, get use to it and build up from there.

If I were going into the apocalypse, I’d probably have to move from where I am, and I’d try and gain bodyfat. Its fuel youre carrying on your body. Eat the fruit and meat that will go bad in a matter of days.
Obviously make sure you can walk for 10’s of kilometers, lift yourself up over obstacles but you can still do that while being a little chubby. You’ll lose the fat fast if you are forced to be active.

  • @RetiredRadioChaser

I'm commenting early in the video, at the 1 minute mark. Most movies about gladiators show them to be hard core, muscled up, possibly extreme low body fat fighters.
A few years ago I read that archeologists, historians, who ever it was, found, gladiators ate a diet that caused them to have a lot of fat on their bodies. They surmised this fat diet provided protection with fat armor (so to speak) to protect from sword cuts, knives, and spear damage to the muscles and body organs .
This sounds reasonable to me. Would you rather have a 1/4 layer of fat to protect your abdominis rectus muscles from a 1 in deep sword cut or a 3 inch layer of fat protecting you from a 1 inch deep sword cut?

This reminds me of a guy I saw that was actually carrying an O2 tank around with a sheepdog patch on it. Now I understand some people health stuff isn't always within their control but that hit me as a reminder of most in this "community".
Anyone who cares about being self reliant should deadlift 400, squat, 300, and press 150. Those are super easy numbers for any man to hit and will make you such a better human than you are now.

    • @drunknnirish
      @drunknnirish 4 місяці тому +1

@@jonc4050 Think about it this way, if you can deadlift 400 you can easily pick up your 200-250 lb buddy in all of his kit and carry him to safety. Just steady work will get you there, 5 lbs a per work out and you can easily be there in six months.
