To that kid, the parent's lack of acknowledgement teaches them that your mom ruining something you care about is the automatic response to exhibiting femininity, like how you learn that if you leave something on the stove the smoke alarm will go off, or if you scare someone who is holding something heavy then they might jump and drop it.

Like much of the Onion's work, it's based in reality. This is taking a common behavior done amongst traditional parents and putting in this more modern context of a morning show. The result is humorous. I got a little bit of this as a kid, being an effeminate boy; so it's certainly a parody of real life. Once, my father tired to make me switch beds with someone at a summer camp because my bed had pink sheets. Hopefully, it will help some parents realize how silly they are being.
