People tend to forget, Godzilla films always tackle the issues of the time. In 1990, it was genetics, gene splicing. Thus, Biollante represented what could go wrong, and also asked a question of whether or not a clone could have a soul since the daughter's spiritual essence was in Biollante.
Most people just think godzilla is a kaiju movie with bad effects they dont know that it is social critisism. First Godzilla was about the atom bomb and the feeling to give such a powerful weapon to the humankind.
Right like the next movie everyone was concerned over time travel. 😂 joking of course. I actually like GvKG and the rest of the Heisei series for all their many faults. But there is no denying there was a steep drop in quality after 84 & GvB. I would have loved to have seen a Heisei series that kept the tone and quality of those two movies but I guess we’ll never know what could have been sadly.
I was just thinking about this a few days ago about how there seemed to be this fear of genetic engineering in the late 80s/early 90s, but I was wondering what was going on in the real world that prompted this fear? The only thing that comes to my mind is Dolly the Sheep but she wasn't created until 1996, a year after the Heisei Godzilla films ended so I'm not sure 🤔
The moment Godzilla emerges from Mt. Mihara in that new and iconic suit with the Ifukube theme blasting in the background, that right there is truly the beginning of the Heisei Godzilla
The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Biollante, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, and Shin Godzilla are probably the films in the franchise that feel closest to the spirit of the '54 original with their dark sci-fi and horror concepts, and the tragedy that faces both humans and kaiju.

This was one of those "Godzilla" movies I wasn't sure I was gonna like, mostly due to the idea that the Big G was going one on one with a plant monster. But I wound up actually enjoying it, Biollante has to be the most original concept for a Godzilla opponent. If I remember from James Rolfe's second Monster Madness, Biollante was the result of a contest in Japan, from what I've heard. Pretty cool that a fan's idea made it into a Godzilla movie.
In fact, Episode 34 of "The Return of Ultraman'' was the original story of Biollante. This is a story that was accepted in a story call when the original author was young. When Godzilla was revived in the Heisei era, a call for original works was held, and an original work that replaced the story of Ultraman with Godzilla was submitted and accepted. From a Japanese Kaijyu fan.
@@ConstantineFurman Apparently Biollante had a ¥700,000,000 budget and made ¥1,040,000,000. But the weird thing is that Godzilla vs King Ghidorah had a ¥1,500,000,000 budget but apparently grossed ¥1,450,000,000. But yeah, the attendance numbers where down from the last film in 1984.
@@MannyTops64 I looked into the numbers earlier and found different results from different sources and decided it wasn't worth it to quote them to you.
Biollante has a great design, I like all the blood, slime and other stuff in the movie, this is what this movie makes unique. The Score for the Super-X2 is fantastic. The Godzilla-Design is really good, the classic Heisei-look. But on the other hand, the '84 movie feels bigger.
Toho should make a new Godzilla movie with the design style of the 2000 version. And make a new monster from space. Or make a parallel world where Spacegodzilla is roaming the galaxy looking for a more powerful source of energy for a new powerful evolution.
Godzilla's entry into Japan's Heisei Dynasty! (Hirohito died in early January 1989, so Showa ended, and Heisei began with Akihito's reign until 2019.) That was quite a big deal at the time. :)
I wish we had a Godzilla vs Biollante vs Hedorah film A spore of biollante was stuck in the melting ice caps and is freed causing it to grow while a new Hedora is growing in the great garbage patch at sea. I'd love another Eco related Godzilla movie
I don't like all the telepathy-stuff her charakter brings in the franchise, sometime it is too much but of course I like Megumi Odaka playing Miki Saegusa, she is so sweat and played it very well. I still hope she get a cameo in an upcoming movie.
It’s crazy that is the sole movie that belongs to Disney when it comes to USA distribution which is why it’s impossible to find the Blu-ray copies now. Or at least it belonged to Miramax which was acquired by Disney but the company was sold off later. I could be wrong that it’s with them now but also maybe Toho regained the rights but never put it back out like the other Heisei films.
i always enjoy Japanese tv and movie marketing because they always just show some of the coolest scenes in the movie or tv show and its like "alright here ya go, now you have to come and see it just to watch where the scenes fall into!" that i think is why so many people- myself included- were so fucking hyped for Godzilla: minus one, and for good reason its a fantastic film!
I wish i got to watch this movie, but theres no dvds on sale (as i know of) its not on any streaming services and its obviously not playing in theaters 😕

Not only is this my favorite Heisei era film but my favorite design of Godzilla ever. They did so well with this film.
My number 2 Favorite Godzilla movie for me as number 1 is Godzilla Vs Destroyah
For a movie that’s slowly crawling to 35 years old, Godzilla and Biollante’s design here aged like fine wine.
The moment Godzilla emerges from Mt. Mihara in that new and iconic suit with the Ifukube theme blasting in the background, that right there is truly the beginning of the Heisei Godzilla
Godzilla walking out of the volcano is still badass until this day
But they did it even better in "Godzilla vs. Mothra."
YES!

An absolutely _spectacular_ film, and Biollante is an extremely impressive looking Kaiju.

We need a Heisei Era box set from Criterion.
Godzilla burst off from the volcano and roaring is one of the most badass scene in the whole franchise.

If I remember from James Rolfe's second Monster Madness, Biollante was the result of a contest in Japan, from what I've heard. Pretty cool that a fan's idea made it into a Godzilla movie.
Well probably because after that fan won the contest, he was chosen to write the movie and worked with directors and stuff

A highpoint for the Heisei series.
Yet, the only one of the bunch that bombed.
@@ConstantineFurman My understanding was that it didn't bomb but just underperformed.
@@MannyTops64 Toho considered it a bomb, so much so that it killed "Mothra vs. Bagan," which was fully ready to go for 1990.

Mothra vs Biollante is my dream Monsterverse movie.
They'd be a pretty good fit for the Monsterverse's style!
Biolante vs Hedorah vs godzilla
There's actually a Biollante easter egg in Godzilla Kotm in the credits
I don’t.
The less classic and well-respected Kaiju characters “reimagined” by that Hollywood schlock-fest, the better.
It's my favourite Godzilla movie of all time, design and story in it are very unique.

One of the best things about this movie and the Heisei era, Megumi Odaka played by Miki Saegusa.

BEST GODZILLA MOVIE
Best Godzilla design ever!
This is one of my favorite Godzilla movies of all time
It sucks that this movie never made that much money, even when it's one of the best heisei movies that was created.
01:43, they were shocked that Biollante was once an aspiring scientist and a best friend back from the dead.
Soooo does this mean y'all are restocking the blu-rays?
The best Heisei Godzilla film
Is there the possibility of re-releasing this film at all?
