    The power of the bow comes from the fact that its a completely straight stick bent with a string so it already has potential energy

    • @NateTheScot
      @NateTheScot Рік тому +3

      I was actually hopeful when they mentioned a recurve and recurve string .. then they attached it to the wrong side without actually bending the bow... apparently they wanted to make a bow without even the most BASIC level of understanding of how/why bows work, or even a quick Google search of how to string one... although he mentioned that he'd seen videos of people making them... so I guess he saw the videos without taking ANY of the information on?? I'm kinda confused tbh.

      Jacob Bothast the “wrong” side isnt really the “wrong” side, theres people who prefer shooting it opposite, there are people that use right handed bows on their right hand (rather then holding the string)
      Its weird...
      Technically not the proper way and honestly this could have ended really bad 😂, also it was already curved inward, i dont know much about longbows and Mongolian bows but my recurve and others are curved outward and curve inward when strung 😂
      Edit: i just remembered english hunters and military who used bows would actually shoot the way brian did on the opposite side b/c it was better for speed shooting, lars anderson also does this

    Despite any internal flaws with the bow, one issue with accuracy is that their arrow is being shot from the wrong side. A right-handed shooter crosses the arrow to the left side of the bow, and vice-versa for left-handed shooters. You can't look down the arrow if it is not aligned with the bow, permanently aiming to the right.

    • @milkrun2370
      @milkrun2370 6 років тому +7

      Many eastern styles of archery have it shot from the right side as it allowed them to fire off arrows faster. Aiming was more about intuition and instinctive while western styles usually had it on the left side. Obviously, they aren't experienced in archery so having the arrow on the left would have been better for this since it is easier to pick up.

    I liked when you revisited the potato cannon. So I'd love an Episode where you improve the PVC Bow and maybe test it on the homemade Body Armor. Or maybe you also try making flaming arrows or something.

  • @bauminsonx9662
    @bauminsonx9662 6 років тому +1

    Please also do an Episode on Disguises. You'd both come up with an disguise and to test them you might meet at a cafe or something. While one of you puts on their disguise in the cafe's restroom the other leaves the cafe and sits down on a bench around the corner.
    The person on the bench would wear a vest or a coat with about 3-5 decent sized buttons. Of which he would unbutton any number he wants. The disguised person than has to walk past the person on the bench, count the buttons and walk around the next corner. From there he has to text the number of still buttoned buttons to win.
    The guy on the bench maybe has to take a picture of the disguised guy to prove that he recognised him. Or he just calls him out when he walks by. Either way is fine.
    Then you'd switch roles.

    I made bows out of PVC pipe for electrical installations when I was a kid back in the '70s. I can guarantee it was a real weapon. A 2 " nail at the end of a wooden rod was perfect for an arrow. Bricklayers rope served perfectly and were durable.

    Some tips for future archery endeavors. Use feather fetching instead of plastic vanes. The feathers collapse as they pass the riser (where your hand is on the bow) and don't kick out as bad. Secondly, when using your fingers instead of a thumb draw, you want to place the arrow on the top of your knuckles on your bow hand. Lastly, avoid bulky gloves as they prevent a smooth release.
    Oh, and keep that elbow up...straight line from bow hand to elbow.

    The reason there's one larger loop on the bowstring is that some bows are strung by sliding the larger loop down the arm of the bow, fitting the smaller loop at the end of the other arm and then, when you bend the bow, you slide the large loop up the arm and into the retaining slots - rather than trying to bend the bow far enough to get the loop over the _end_ of the arm.

    Brian, don’t leave the bow strung, it’s not good for it. Especially with PVC, at room temp it’s slightly pliable, and if you refrigerate it, it becomes brittle. So definitely don’t leave it strung. Just a tip. Also, I expect that only you read the comments. Sorry, Jason.

    I really enjoyed this video. And, while I haven't made a pvc bow myself, I have a few suggestions that could help. First, with as easy as it was to bend, you probably could make a recurve without much trouble, and not only will it improve the power of the bow, it'll be less likely for the acting to slide off. Two, if you don't have a dremel tool (why wouldn't you, they are awesome!) you should definitely invest in one and get some carving bits. You could, for example, use one to make a quick, smooth notch for the string that's less likely to wear out the loop of the string. Third, if you're shooting right-handed (and not on horse back), the arrow goes along the left side of the bow, not the right. Fourth, you really should work on your form to get more consistent shooting (not that what you were doing want fun to watch). Fifth, after making the bow, find out what the draw weight is so you can get the right arrows for it. The last one is a bit complicated, but the reason has to do with what's called the archer's paradox. When launched from a bow, arrows bend back and forth...meaning the tip doesn't go in a straight line. All arrows have a spine rating which determines how much that happens based mainly on the weight off the bow. You actually want some "bendiness" as the string and shaft are in line which causes the arrow to get deflected, which the "bendiness" corrects for (simplified explication). Again, I think this was talked about in the mounted archery episode. Anyway, I'd love to see an episode where you revisit now making and see if you can improve on your pvc bow. Basically, I'm hoping you can manage to more effectively shot the dummy (and not reset the injury counter 😝).
