DELPHINE DESCENDS
After her family is killed and her homeworld occupied, young Kathreen Martin is sent to the distant world of Furoris for re-education. She will live the rest of her life as a serf - to be bought and sold as a commodity of the Imperial Network.
When her only chance of escape is ruined, a chance mistaken identity offers her a new life as the orphaned daughter of a First-Citizen Senator and heiress to a vast fortune.
She vows to claw her way into power to sit among the worlds’ elite. Then, with her own hands, she will reap bloody vengeance on them all.
But to beat them, she must play their game. And she must play it better than them all.
BLACK MILK
Prometheus has the chance to bring his wife back from the dead, but doing so will mean the destruction of Earth.
Spanning time, planets and dimensions, Black Milk draws to a climactic point in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity, stranded with no planet to call home, fights to survive against a post-human digital entity that pursues them through the depths of space.
Five lives separated by aeons are inextricably linked by Prometheus’s actions:
Ystil.3 is an AI unit sent back in time from the distant future to investigate Prometheus’s discovery...
The mysterious Lydia has devoted her life to finding a planet that the last remaining humans can call home…
Tom Jones (he’s a HUGE fan!) is an AI trapped inside a digital subspace, lost and desperate to find his way back to his beloved in real-time…
Dr Norma Stanwyck is a neuroscientist from 24th Century Earth whose personal choices ripple throughout time...
Prometheus must learn the necessity of death or the entire universe will be swallowed by his grief.

I am 3/4 through this novel, and It is my virgin read. Hyperion, I read years ago, and never read the other three. I re-read it for this full series binge I am on now. Of the three, I think I like this one best. I rush to read it during work lunch, and after work it easily wins the battle over watching you tube videos instead. grin.
I thank you for your Hyperion series reviews, which got me restarted on the series again.
Prepare for sad
I absolutely love your voice! I’ve been really on the fence about reading Simmons but you did a fantastic job of laying out what happens and the world and now I want to read it right now.
Thanks for this--I'm finally finishing The Fall of Hyperion and wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with the others, so this helps.
Stopping is not an option. Seriously though, just don't go into it with expectations unless you expect major changes. Its rally two duologies.
Not my all-time favourite sci-fi author, but easily one of the best.
Who's your fave ?. Good channel by the way mate..
@@philipmcritchie7309 Cheers! I used to say Ursula K. Le Guin was my favourite, but I'm not so sure anymore. Still love her stuff but I'm getting more into harder sci-fi at the moment.
Hey man, good vid. I only got into recreational reading after I read 'Hyperion' four years ago. After finishing the series I continued to read one scifi book after another. I sometimes break it up by reading non-ficfion (history, age of sail, nature, etc).
I've just subscribed to your channel because I am hopeful that you will introduce me to books that I will enjoy.
hey is that same background theme that Quinns Ideas uses?
hey you know quinn, you you know what your doing.
I think within the 4 books there was enough great ideas for 3 books but the pacing is just off, the 4th book especially needs to be 300 pages shorter
Indeed
Best sci-fi channel on UA-cam!
Here are my quick and spoiler-free reviews of each book in the Hyperion Cantos:
HYPERION - The world building in this book is incredible and the characters are mostly unique and interesting. The scope of the ideas and themes is awesome. My main problem with the book is that there's no plot progression in the present timeline. It's basically "How about we slowly travel from A to B and each tell our backstory along the way." There's also no ending. This might bother me less on a re-read as I know what's to come. VERDICT - 80%
THE FALL OF HYPERION - This really delivers on what is set up in Hyperion. It starts a little slow but once it gets going it expands on a lot of ideas, answers a lot questions (but also raises a few more), provides a lot more action and crushes the ending. This is one of the best things I've ever read. VERDICT - 100%
ENDYMION - This is a more intimate story as it follows two storylines as opposed to six or seven. These two books feel connected to but separate from Hyperion in a lot of ways. Some characters make a return in ways that are more or less important than others. The plot was a little repetitive but I enjoyed the new worlds and the character development. It built towards some great action and an ending that satisfyingly brought this part of the story to its conclusion, while also setting up the next. VERDICT - 95%
THE RISE OF ENDYMION - This felt quite different to any of the other books. There is a lot more exposition and while some of the concepts and themes are truly wonderful, I wish they had been played out through more plot progression. It does answer some questions from Hyperion but in some ways makes others things less clear. It can also be a little frustrating when one character can vaguely see the future and much of the dialogue is "Why?" followed by "I can't explain yet." I did see one of the twists coming but the ending still hits emotionally. VERDICT - 80%
Overall, I highly recommend Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion for basically any sci-fi fan. Endymion and The Rise of Endymion are great too but I think you can take a break between the two duologies and jump back in if/when you feel like experiencing that world again but with mostly new characters.
Great break down.
I've been a fan of Hyperion cantos for decades now. But Endymion is by far the weakest book in the series. It is, basically, a book about people going from one place to another. The Endymion duology is not even comparable with the original two books.
Great book. Had a hard time with it tho. I'm not that smart
Umm. Yeah. You're given spoilers away for "Rise of Endymion" not just Endymion. I just finished Endymion and was watching this for an overview of what I just read and now find that you're giving things away from the next book. The title of this "intro" is misleading. Stopped watching at 3:11 when you mentioned Raul being imprisoned in a satellite which I didn't know after reading Endymion. Sorry, thumbs down.
It's revealed at the beginning of Endymion. And it's mentioned several times during the story. In fact, the whole story of Aenea is narrated by Raul while he is imprisoned, which he explains at great length.
You don't need an overview, you need to actually read the book.
