Just be warned, the first book takes a good 80-100 pages before it becomes really compelling, so it can be quite hard to get into initially.

You did such a great job with this! The Hyperion Cantos is my favorite sci-fi series of all time. This definitely brought back some fond memories. Thanks!
The series had one of those rare, special moments for me as a reader - a stark, diamond-like epiphany regarding one of the central mysteries of the tale where just one piece of information suddenly results is so many disparate pieces fitting together. I remember having to put the book down at that moment (1995?) as I was completely overwhelmed by it's implications... great, great stuff made all more delightful because it was not the result of some ham-handed exposition dump or silly techno-bable but the delivery of a single sentence - a suggestion in guise of a question, really - that suddenly reveals the horrifying stakes in play.
