Hyperion is God level sci-fi. Simmons has created a work of art and world beyond imagination. Its followup, Endymion, is amazing as well.

I don't suppose you could tell me the basic gist of the plot? Because I've read the Wikipedia entries and watched a ton of these videos and I still have _no idea_ what these books are actually about.

@@RelativelyBest the main characters in the first book are journeying to a mysterious planet called Hyperiob, all for different reasons. The planet has a place that travels back in time and a ridiculously powerful creature “guarding” it called the Shrike. The human species are allied with a massive AI (Technocore) community that provides them with FTL travel (farcasters) as well as predictions of the future. There’s a subgroup of humans called Ousters who live on massive spaceships, relations with them are very tense. A war breaks out between the humans and Ousters over Hyperion, but it turns out it’s the Technocore who are trying to wipe out all human life because in the far, far future two “gods”, one born from machines and one born from humans, are waging an intergalactic war not only through space but in time. The Shrike is actually sent by the machine god to find a piece of the human god who has escaped the conflict because it found it to horrific. Oh and there’s an experimental AI born inside a clone of the long dead poet Keats which plays a pivotal role.
Doesn’t make much sense does it? I can’t recommend these books enough, a fantastic journey.

Just Some Guy Ok Hyperion is phenomenal. My favorite book series. It’s writing is more modern and easier to follow than Dune imo, and while the first book is the best, the whole series has a great plot.
Just be warned, the first book takes a good 80-100 pages before it becomes really compelling, so it can be quite hard to get into initially.

Look, I've read Dune, and almost everything that Asimov wrote. So I'm a fan. But ironically, Hyperion is the only science fiction series where I felt like the author truly had something *insightful* to say about the politics of his time and where society was heading to.

@@davidvosspoor4694 I do have to agree so far with to you when relating to Foundation. I'm currently reading the series, but I feel that it's less clever than people have made it out to be. The dialogue, seeing as it is the way Asmiov predominantly tells the story, is lackluster. The repeated use of "spacey-terms" in place of contemporary ones, takes me out of the story at times.

The series had one of those rare, special moments for me as a reader - a stark, diamond-like epiphany regarding one of the central mysteries of the tale where just one piece of information suddenly results is so many disparate pieces fitting together. I remember having to put the book down at that moment (1995?) as I was completely overwhelmed by it's implications... great, great stuff made all more delightful because it was not the result of some ham-handed exposition dump or silly techno-bable but the delivery of a single sentence - a suggestion in guise of a question, really - that suddenly reveals the horrifying stakes in play.

Love this series, Please cover Pandora's Star. It's quite underrated and has an interesting take on a wormhole based space civilization.

Hyperion cantos are fantastic, especially part 1 and 4. Iain M. Banks' The Culture (which I find even better, more humane and elaborate), was very much influenced by it.

Great channel Queen's Ideas! If you want to complete the Cantos, you might want to read the Orphans of the Helix, which kind of offers a short glimpse of the post Aenean future and ties some of the loose ends the Rise leaves open to interpretation.

I've reread these books thrice. One of my favorite finds. Dan Simmons writes some incredible horror too. Summer of Night is what got me into his writing.
